The FIFA World Cup trophy, 36.5 cms tall and plaited with a total of 18 carats of gold has become the dream of every football player on the planet. Winning that trophy is the fruit of a strenuous football preparation that goes far above just an appearance at the world`s most coveted football competi- tion The World Cup. @Simon Lyonga o keep the myth that surrounds the tro- phy, FIFA has made its touch accessible to only coaches and players who have won it on the field as well as heads of state. Till Tdate, only 422 players from 8 countries have had that privilege, making many wonder why win- ning that precious metal has not only become so daunting, but almost impossible a mission. Football pundits might not have a clear de- sign to win the trophy, but almost always base their arguments on: the quality of players, the coach`s experience, the level of preparedness and the organisation of the team`s football fe- deration. 4 CRTV WEB le Mag . No 000014 RUSSIE 2018 The quality of players has always been the major contribution in a country`s world cup winning dreams. Having a star player like Lionel Messi doesn`t guarantee victory at the end. But a star- studded squad is a major force. With 5 trophies, the selecao of Brazil stand clear as the all-time best of the competition, having participated in all 21 editions, keeping a homogeneous play style and a compact team always. They have entered the records as the world cup terrors just because of the quality of players churned from football academies in the country. Names like Pele, Garrincha, Tostao, Falcao, Socrates, Romario, Ronaldinho and today Naymar have been very instrumental in keeping their name in the World cup Hall of Fame. Others could include Argentina`s Diego Maradona, Italy`s Paolo Rossi, Germany`s Frank Beckenbauer and England`s George Best or Bobby Charlton. While the players make a team, placing them to fit a game plan and topple the opponents is the job of a coach. And only an experienced coach can withstand the pressure of the tournament and the change room caprices of world class players to deliver at the end. This far only 19 coaches have won the trophy with Italy`s Vitto- rio Pozzo being the lone coach to`ve won two editions (1934 1938). Well paid coaches with a sound technical knowhow is of utmost impor- tance in a quest for global football glory. Preparing for the competition carries the Lion`s share of a team`s will to win the world cup. And preparations include selecting the best players for the country, deciding on the play plan far in advance, playing top notch friendlies ahead of the competition, deciding on bonuses ahead of time, appointing the right staff to cater for the team and preparing ahead of time. This might play the trick and offer an excellent working cli- mate for the players. Poor internal organisation can be a killer weapon for world cup bound squads for they provide breeding ground for indiscipline and unprofessional attitudes to step in. The case of Cameroon and Ghana at the 2014 World Cup when players refused to travel and train, instead wasting time to negotiate bonuses are clear exa- mples of poor organisation. At the end, they got an early elimination in the group phase. A well organised FA prepares in advance and ensures that each link in the football chain does just what is expected of them. That too creates an enabling environment for a team to play well. While these can greatly increase a team`s chances of winning games and consequently the world cup trophy, the players shape of the day and other factors can affect the outcome because football remains just a game. Club Brugge KV v SK Rapid Wien PRESS KIT Jan Breydel, Bruges Wednesday, 2 November 2005 - 20:45 CET Group A - Matchday 4 When the teams met on 18 October at SK Rapid Wien's Ernst Happel stadium, a 75th- minute strike from Boško Balaban was enough to ensure Club Brugge KV victory. It meant the Belgian champions collected their first points in Group A, and left their Austrian counterparts still searching for a first-ever win in the UEFA Champions League. The one goal scored on Matchday 3 went against the trend of previous matches between the teams, with their two previous ties in UEFA club competition producing a hatful of goals. Rapid unbeaten in Bruges •The Austrian side are unbeaten in their two previous trips to Club Brugge having left Belgium with a draw and a win. Overall, their four matches have produced 23 goals. First meeting •Thirteen of them were scored in their first meeting in the first round of the 1986/87 UEFA Cup Winners' Cup. Rapid edged a thrilling first leg 4-3 at home as goals from Reinhard Kienast (2), Karl Brauneder and Gerald Willfurth cancelled out Ronny Rosenthal's opener. What should have been a comfortable first-leg victory from that point turned out to be anything but, as Luc Beyens and Dennis van Wijk struck for Club Brugge to narrow the lead and ensure a nervous finale. •In the return leg at the Jan Breydelstadion in Bruges, Kenneth Brylle Larsen and Rosenthal gave the home side the lead in the tie, but Rapid hit back immediately with goals from current Croatia coach Zlatko Kranjcar, Rudolf Weinhofer and Sulejman Halilovic to take control at 3-2.

(Pindar) Water. There's too much of it, or too little. It's too salty, or too sweet. It wells up from the ground, carves itself a way through the land, and then it's called a river or a stream. It descends from the heavens in a variety of forms - as dew or hail, to mention just the extremes. And then, of course, there is the all-encompassing water which we call the sea, and which reminds us of the beginning of all things. The English once labelled the Netherlands across the North Sea ‘this indigested vomit of the sea’. But the Dutch went to work on that vomit, systematically and stubbornly: ‘... their tireless hands manufactured this land, / drained it and trained it and planed it and planned’ (James Brockway). As God's subcontractors they gradually became experts in living apart together. Look carefully at the first photo. The water has struck again. We're talking 1926. Gelderland. The small, stocky woman visiting the stricken province is Queen Wilhelmina. Without turning a hair she allows herself to be carried over the waters.

However, EURO 2008 convinced me that it was a good idea. Once again, the tournament illustrated the extraordinary passion generated by national team football and gave rise to such a fantastic party atmosphere that I felt it was only right for the tournament to be extended to more countries, to let even more supporters take part and to spread the excitement and party atmosphere far and wide across the continent. I also felt that the emotion of the tournament should be heightened by adding a direct knockout round for the last 16 in the competition and by ensuring that all the group matches, or the vast majority of them at least, would be crucial, by allowing the best third-placed teams through to the next round. The quality of the matches we saw during EURO 2008 also confirmed the high technical level of European football, and teams like England, Scotland and IN THIS ISSUE Denmark, or even Serbia and Ukraine – to name but a few – would certainly not UEFA Cup groups 03 have reduced the quality of the tournament.
