Early establishment of vertebrate trophic interactions: Food web structure in Middle to Late Devonian fish assemblages with exceptional fossilization MARION CHEVRINAIS,CLAIRE JACQUET & RICHARD CLOUTIER In past and present ecosystems, trophic interactions determine material and energy transfers among species, regulating population dynamics and community stability. Food web studies in past ecosystems are helpful to assess the persistence of ecosystem structure throughout geological times and to explore the existence of general principles of food web assem- bly. We determined and compared the trophic structure of two Devonian fish assemblages [(1) the Escuminac assem- blage (ca. 380 Ma), Miguasha, eastern Canada and (2) the Lode assemblage (ca. 390 Ma), Straupe, Latvia] with a closer look at the Escuminac assemblage. Both localities are representative of Middle to Late Devonian aquatic vertebrate as- semblages in terms of taxonomic richness (ca. 20 species), phylogenetic diversity (all major groups of lower vertebrates) and palaeoenvironment (palaeoestuaries). Fossil food web structures were assessed using different kinds of direct (i.e. digestive contents and bite marks in fossils) and indirect (e.g. ecomorphological measurements, stratigraphic species co-occurrences) indicators. First, the relationships between predator and prey body size established for the Escuminac fishes are comparable to those of recent aquatic ecosystems, highlighting a consistency of aquatic food web structure across geological time. Second, non-metric dimensional scaling on ecomorphological variables and cluster analysis showed a common pattern of functional groups for both fish assemblages; top predators, predators, primary and second- ary consumers were identified. We conclude that Devonian communities were organized in multiple trophic levels and that size-based feeding interactions were established early in vertebrate history. -

ABSTRACT New fossil lungfish remains comprising two parasphenoids, tooth plates and scales from the Famennian Witpoort Formation of South Africa are described. From the parasphenoid material, which bears similarity to Oervigia and Sagenodus but is nevertheless unique, a new genus, Isityumzi mlomomde gen. et sp. nov. is erected. Tooth plates and scales from the same locality may be conspecific but are not yet assigned until further material becomes available. The tooth plates closely resemble those of some taxa in the Carboniferous genus Ctenodus. The new taxon is significant as only the second Devonian lungfish described from the African continent, and for hailing from the high-latitude (polar) Waterloo Farm environment situated close to 70 south during the Famennian. PALAEONTOLOGICAL HERITAGE OF THE EASTERN CAPE John Almond Natura Viva cc, CAPE TOWN Billy de Klerk Albany Museum, GRAHAMSTOWN Robert Gess Bernard Price Institute (Palaeontology), Wits University, JOHANNESBURG The Eastern Cape is the second largest province in South Africa, comprising some 14% of the area of the RSA. The population is about seven million. The province is renowned for its living biodiversity and it also boasts a rich fossil record stretching back some 560 million years. The majority of the provincial area is underlain by shallow marine, coastal and terrestrial sediments of Phanerozoic ( ie post- Precambrian) age that are known to contain fossils of some sort, or are potentially fossiliferous (See accompanying simplified geological map and stratigraphic chart, both produced by the Council for Geoscience, Pretoria). Among the palaeontological highlights of the Eastern Cape are: • diverse, high-latitude lacustrine to lagoonal biotas from the Late Devonian – Early Carboniferous Witteberg Group ( c. 360-345 Ma = million years ago). These include a variety of fish and vascular plants as well as rarer arthropods. • fish, reptiles and therapsids (“mammal-like reptiles”) from the Late Permian to Early Triassic Beaufort Group ( c. 266-250 Ma) • extraordinarily rich fossil floras from the Late Triassic Molteno Formation ( c. 220 Ma) • a range of Early Cretaceous dinosaurs and plant fossils from the Kirkwood Formation ( c. 135 Ma) • rich shelly marine faunas from the Early Cretaceous Sundays River Formation ( c. 135 Ma) • important coastal marine fossil biotas of the Algoa Group ranging from Eocene to Recent in age (50 to 0 Ma). Important fossil collections from the Eastern Cape are housed at several South African Institutions, such as: Iziko: South African Museum (Cape Town), Albany Museum (Grahamstown), Port Elizabeth Museum (Port Elizabeth), Bernard Price Institute for Palaeontology, Wits. -

Rob Gess Consulting was contracted to conduct a phase one Palaeontological Impact Assessment for this proposed development. Geology The area intended for development overlies strata of the upper portion of the Cape Supergroup and lowermost portion of the unconformably overlying Karoo Supergroup. In addition, portions of the Cape Supergroup rocks are capped by relict patches of Silcrete formed as a product of deep leaching during the Cretaceous. Cape Supergroup rocks represent sediments deposited in the Agulhas Sea, which had opened to the south of the current southern African landmass, in response to early rifting between Africa and South America during the Ordivician. The Witteberg Group is the uppermost of three subdivisions of the Cape Supergroup and was laid down during the Late Devonian and early Carboniferous. Within the study area the Lake Mentz subgroup of the Witteberg group is exposed. The Lake Menz Subgroup (Witteberg Group, Cape Supergroup) consists of four subunits (the Witpoort, Kweekvlei, Floriskraal and Waaipoort formations. -

Geodiversitas 34 (3): 469-487. http://dx.doi.org/10.5252/ g2012n3a1 ABSTRACT New anatomical details are described for the acanthodian Lupopsyrus pygmaeus Bernacsek & Dineley, 1977, based on newly prepared, nearly complete body fossils from the MOTH locality, Northwest Territories, Canada. New interpre- tations of previously known structures are provided, while the head, tail, and sensory lines of L. pygmaeus are described for the first time. The pectoral girdle of L. pygmaeus shows no evidence of pinnal and lorical plates as mentioned in the original species description. Instead, the dermal elements of the pectoral region appear to comprise a single pair of prepectoral spines which rest on transversely oriented procoracoids, and large, shallowly inserted, ornamented pectoral fin spines which contact both the procoracoids and scapulocoracoids. The scales of L. pygmaeus lack growth zones and mineralized basal tissue, and superficially resemble scales of thelodonts or monodontode placoid scales of early chondrichthyans, and not the typical scales of acanthodians. However, L. pygmaeus possesses perichondrally-ossified pork-chop shaped scapulocora- coids, a series of hyoidean gill plates, and scale growth that originates near the caudal peduncle; these features suggest a relationship to acanthodians.
