  • Animating Race the Production and Ascription of Asian-Ness in the Animation of Avatar: the Last Airbender and the Legend of Korra
Animating Race The Production and Ascription of Asian-ness in the Animation of Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra Francis M. Agnoli Submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) University of East Anglia School of Art, Media and American Studies April 2020 This copy of the thesis has been supplied on condition that anyone who consults it is understood to recognise that its copyright rests with the author and that use of any information derived there from must be in accordance with current UK Copyright Law. In addition, any quotation or extract must include full attribution. 2 Abstract How and by what means is race ascribed to an animated body? My thesis addresses this question by reconstructing the production narratives around the Nickelodeon television series Avatar: The Last Airbender (2005-08) and its sequel The Legend of Korra (2012-14). Through original and preexisting interviews, I determine how the ascription of race occurs at every stage of production. To do so, I triangulate theories related to race as a social construct, using a definition composed by sociologists Matthew Desmond and Mustafa Emirbayer; re-presentations of the body in animation, drawing upon art historian Nicholas Mirzoeff’s concept of the bodyscape; and the cinematic voice as described by film scholars Rick Altman, Mary Ann Doane, Michel Chion, and Gianluca Sergi. Even production processes not directly related to character design, animation, or performance contribute to the ascription of race. Therefore, this thesis also references writings on culture, such as those on cultural appropriation, cultural flow/traffic, and transculturation; fantasy, an impulse to break away from mimesis; and realist animation conventions, which relates to Paul Wells’ concept of hyper-realism.

FREE AVATAR: THE LAST AIRBENDER - SMOKE AND SHADOW PART 3 PDF Gene Luen Yang | 80 pages | 14 Apr 2016 | DARK HORSE COMICS | 9781616558383 | English | Milwaukee, United States "Avatar: The Last Airbender": I'm Still Not Over Zuko's Redemption Arc Fans of Avatar: The Last Airbender are nothing if not dedicated. However, it turns out that there used to Avatar: The Last Airbender - Smoke and Shadow Part 3 a fourth season planned out — and it could have changed everything. Avatar: The Last Airbender writer Aaron Ehasz sat down for a chat with Den of Geekduring which he revealed that the ending to Avatar was briefly very different from what we have today. Ehasz also suggested the season would have seen Iroh communicating with the spirit world once more, as well as a possible reincarnation of Gyatso in the form of a new airbender. However, Ehasz stressed that he is satisfied with the ending as it exists now. Who needs a tea chat with Uncle Iroh today? Interestingly enough, M. Ehasz claimed that the focus on the film meant less time spent preparing for a fourth season. Humorously enough, Dev Patel was once spotted apologizing to a fan for the Shyamalan adaptation. In a recently resurfaced clipPatel can be seen signing an autograph for a fan on Avatar merchandise. While the first attempt at a live-action adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender failed spectacularly, Netflix is jockeying to capitalize on the renewed interest in the franchise with a new adaptation. However, they naturally also feel some trepidation given the last attempt.

  • Morocco's Escalating Protests Call for a Careful Response by Sarah Feuer
MENU Policy Analysis / PolicyWatch 2816 Morocco's Escalating Protests Call for a Careful Response by Sarah Feuer Jun 6, 2017 Also available in Arabic ABOUT THE AUTHORS Sarah Feuer Dr. Sarah Feuer, an expert on politics and religion in North Africa, is the Rosenbloom Family Fellow at the Washington Institute for Near East Policy's Geduld Program on Arab Politics. Brief Analysis To help a key North African ally preserve its stability, Washington should quietly urge the kingdom to take measures that address the protestors' demands -- and reconsider cutting U.S. assistance. n recent weeks, Morocco has been rocked by its largest demonstrations since 2011, when hundreds of thousands I of citizens took to the streets demanding jobs and an end to corruption against a backdrop of uprisings across the Arab world. The kingdom experienced occasional bouts of protest in subsequent years, which the government managed to contain. The latest demonstrations, originating in the traditionally restive northern Rif region, are once again testing the country's relative stability. With a nationwide protest planned for July 20, Rabat's next move may determine whether the movement morphs into a wider, potentially destabilizing phenomenon or dissipates as in past episodes. WHAT SPURRED THE PROTESTS? T he current unrest dates back to October 28, 2016, when protests erupted in the northern city of al-Hoceima following the death of local fish vendor Mouhcine Fikri, then spread to Tetouan, Casablanca, Marrakesh, and Rabat. Authorities had confiscated and discarded $11,000 worth of protected swordfish that Fikri was selling illicitly. When he jumped into the garbage truck to retrieve it, he was crushed by the compactor.

  • Hey Arnold, Avatar: the Last
Subversive Masculinity in Children’s Animation: Hey Arnold, Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Loud House by Kristen L. Sales A Thesis Submitted in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Science in Media and Communication Middle Tennessee State University February 2019 Thesis Committee: Chair Dr. Jane Marcellus Dr. Jennifer Woodard Dr. Mark Jackson Abstract Many existing studies of gender and gender representation in children’s animated media focus on women. These studies tend to focus on breaking down and analyzing the strict binaries of the representation of female characters. Studies of masculinity are often limited to a discussion of toxic male behaviors, with masculinity relegated to a point of contention instead of a basis of study. Using hegemonic masculinity as a theoretical framework, this thesis examines the representation of masculinity in three characters in children’s animated media—Arnold from Hey Arnold, Aang from Avatar: The Last Airbender and Lincoln from The Loud House. Each of these characters subverts hegemonic or toxic masculinity. This thesis examines how each character does so. Using frame theory, the thesis will examine both what is said and what is not said within each character’s narrative. This thesis also analyzes what is seen within the narrative of the series that makes the characters’ depictions of masculinity subversive or not, including what the characters don’t do as well as what they do. ii Table of Contents I. ABSTRACT Exploring the Philosophical and Cultural Significance of Avatar: The Last Airbender Sreya Bhattaru Director: Dr. Anne-Marie Schultz, Ph.D. The Nickelodeon television series Avatar: The Last Airbender is a popular children’s show, which aired from 2005-2008. My thesis explores the various philosophical traditions and cultural significance of the show to display how it would be considered ‘appropriate’ media by Plato, and therefore, another text of philosophy, introducing the audience to various, realistic depictions of human nature, and virtue ethics. First, I discuss the friendships in the show, while relating them to the different friendships outlined by Aristotle. Friendships were categorized as either having virtue or exhibiting qualities that resembled virtue. In my second chapter, I discover the different eastern and western philosophical influences of the show. I look at Hinduism, Taoism, Confucianism, Kung Fu, and the Presocratic philosophers, Plato, Aristotle, and Heidegger. The show embeds these philosophical traditions in a very respectful and never-done-before way. I found the show to be a potential model for a new type of storytelling that would encompass more complex thoughts about traditional notions of good versus evil. In my third chapter, I analyze a few key characters and their moral formations while using Aristotle and Machiavelli as the framework to view their actions and individual journeys. In my final chapter, I interpret the various contemporary, real-world topics that the show masterfully embeds into various episodes. These include the environment, disabilities, censorship, Asian representation in the media, feminism, and imperialism. I also reflect on my thoughts on the show, both when I saw it as a child and later as an adult, and other viewers’ thoughts on the show, to display the impact it has on people’s lives.

  • Tunisia and Algeria Amidst the Arab Spring: Lived Experiences of Hope
Tunisia and Algeria Amidst the Arab Spring: Lived Experiences of Hope Uriel Abulof & Shirley Le Penne, Tel Aviv University and Cornell University Now that we have tasted hope, Now that we have lived on this hard-earned crust, We would sooner die than seek any other taste to life, Any other way of being human. -- Khaled Mattawa, Now that we have tasted hope Introduction Political life draws on a deceivingly obvious, forward-looking force: hope. After all, why would one vote, join a party or demonstrate, if not for imagining that things should, and can, get better, and one can help make it so? But if so, how can we explain that the Arab Spring’s moment of hope was ignited, literally, by Mohamed Bouazizi’s suicidal despair? This paper seeks to resolve this apparent paradox. We argue that, at the heart of the Arab Spring, as perhaps of every revolution, lies the interplay between political hope and despair. We show how political hope ascends by defying fear and fatalism, underlining the emergence, evolution, and outcomes of the Arab Spring in the Maghreb, comparing Tunisia 2011 and Algeria 2019. We tap into the lived experience of Arab protests by analyzing its discourse, focusing on key individuals (in the case of Tunisia) and symbols (in Algeria). We propose that the revolutionary hopeful process develops, dynamically and dialectically, from (personal) rage, through (moral) outrage, to (social) courage. Investigating the revolutionary matrix of hope and despair has much to benefit from, and contribute to, political theory. To-date, political scientists have hardly conducted dedicated research on this lifeline of politics.

"No, hes tired, weve been flying for a long time now" replied Aang. Sokka, Katara, Aang and mo-mo were flying over a large ocean on appas back. Only, the waves were getting bigger, the rain heavier and the wind stronger. Soon it developed into a ferocious storm. "We need to land somewhere, or well get blown out of the sky" shouted Aang, above the roaring wind. "Hey! Look! Theres an island over there!" exclaimed Katara, pointing. Sokka looked. The island was in the shape of a moon. It reminded him of Princess Yue. His spirits fell. Appa sped up slightly as they got closer to the island, and finally landed. "Ill go get some firewood, Katara, can you get some fish? Oh and Sokka, can you set up camp in that cave over there?" asked Aang. Sokka jumped up at the chance of being alone for a while. He walked towards the cave, with Appa close behind. Sokka sighed. Appa licked him, as if to cheer him up. "Thanks, Appa" Sokka muttered. Sokka quickly set up camp, then walked outside. He lay on the ground and looked up at the stars, the moon.

  • Predator, Prey, and Obstacles
Project 05 - Predator, Prey, and Obstacles INTRODUCTION The purpose of this assignment was for us to create a simulation that uses a predator (consumer), prey (resource), and obstacles(places agents can't go). To do this, we used the design framework from project 04 but added complexity to the ways that the agents acted and interacted with each other. SOLUTION I created a simulation of Appa from Avatar the Last Airbender attempting to eat apples from trees, while avoiding deserts and annoying fire benders like Zuko. The hardest part of this project was organizing the updateState for each agent and figuring out a system for how the agents (Appa and the trees) would change state. It was very hard to balance my simulation since there were so many variables. APPA Appa, my consumer agent, changes forms depending on the number of apples in his tummy. He initializes to the landscape with 45 apples and as a category 3 (pictured furthest to the left). If he has less than 40 apples in his stomach, Appa becomes hungry and opens his mouth. If he has less than 10 apples in his stomach, Appa becomes sad and sick. If Appa has no apples in his tummy, he goes on a rebellion and leaves the landscape. If Appa has more than 100 apples in his stomach, he becomes armored Appa. If there are apple trees around him at his current location, he doesn't move and eats five apples. Otherwise, Appa attempts to move. If the location he is trying to move to is blocked by the desert agent, he stays put.
