Book Two: Earth premiered on Nickelodeon on March 17, It consisted of 20 episodes and concluded on December 1, The season Avatar: The Last Airbender 2 considerable acclaim, with the series being called "consistently excellent. Between January 23, and September 11,Paramount Home Entertainment released four DVD sets containing five episodes each before releasing the entire season as a boxset. After leaving his uncle, Zuko continues his journey through an Earth Kingdom town where a young boy named Lee befriends him. Zuko remembers his childhood, including Azula's chilling behavior and his own perseverance. Finally he recalls his mother's last words and the announcement that his grandfather died and his mother had suddenly disappeared. As Zuko defends Lee's family against abusive Earth Kingdom soldiers, he reveals his identity as the Fire Avatar: The Last Airbender 2 at the battle's end, and the boy, his family, and the townspeople reject him because of it. After leaving the desert, the group fortuitously meets up with Suki and attempts to lead a pregnant woman and her husband through the Serpent's Pass, a dangerous route to the outlands of Ba Sing Avatar: The Last Airbender 2. They are attacked by a Fire Nation ship and narrowly escape. Suki and Sokka attempt to rekindle their relationship, with Sokka acting overprotective to Suki after he lost Yue at the North Pole. Suki reveals she has feelings for Sokka as well. They almost kiss under the moon, though Sokka stops himself. Meanwhile, Zuko and Iroh, assuming new identities as Earth Kingdom refugees, are also on their way to start a new life in the Earth Kingdom capital, and encounter Jet and some of the Freedom Fighters, with whom Zuko starts to bond. Aang and the Avatar: The Last Airbender 2 are attacked again, this time by the serpent that lends its name to the route. He and Katara defeat the beast and the group arrives on the outskirts of Ba Sing Se. However, Ying goes into labor and delivers her daughter. Aang Avatar: The Last Airbender 2 moved to tears by the sight, and says that the couple has made him hopeful again. Ying decides to name her daughter "Hope". Sokka and Suki share their first kiss, while Aang confesses to Katara how the happiness of Ying's family reminds him how he feels about Appa and her. Aang reunites with his friends intent on stopping the drill. Though their offer to help is initially refused by the Earth Kingdom general at the Outer Wall, Team Avatar begins finding a way to take down the drill. They determine the best way is to sabotage the drill from the inside, then deliver a final blow to the top of the structure to take it down. Battling Azula Mai and Ty Lee, Aang successfully stops the drill with it still plugging the hole in the outer wall. Jet becomes suspicious of the two when he deduces that Iroh heated his own cup of tea using Firebending. Aang and the rest of the group arrive in Ba Sing Se, determined to find Appa and inform the Earth King about the upcoming opportunity the solar eclipse will provide to strike back against the Fire Nation. However, they soon discover that the protocols and bureaucracy of the royal court and aristocracy surrounding the Earth King block them from making contact with him. They are assigned a liaison, an uncomfortably cheerful young woman named Joo Dee, who indirectly makes it clear to them that any mention of the war is forbidden within the walls of the city. This is only one of many disturbing rules they discover, which are enforced by the Dai Li, the "cultural authority" of Ba Sing Se. Katara comes up with a plan to see the Earth King, by her and Toph sneaking their way into a party at the Royal Palace while Aang and Sokka sneak in as servers. The quartet is eventually found out and greeted by Long Feng, the head of the Dai Li. Long Feng reveals that the Earth King has no true political power, only serving as a figurehead in meaningless tasks while Long Feng and the Dai Li control every other aspect of the city. They see it as a way to ensure Ba Sing Se remains the last total utopia on Earth, as Avatar: The Last Airbender 2 kids threaten to expose them. Elsewhere, Jet repeatedly tries and fails to gather evidence that Zuko and Iroh are firebenders, and his allies Smellerbee and Longshot begin to believe he is becoming dangerously obsessed. Jet's final attempt, confronting the pair in a tea shop they work at, followed by a sword fight with Zuko, which ends in Jet's arrest and subsequent brainwashing by the Dai Li into believing there is no war inside Ba Sing Se's walls. The episode is a set of vignettes about each of the main characters' adventures in Ba Sing Se, providing a glimpse of their personalities and private lives. Note: Iroh's tale was dedicated to his voice actor Mako Iwamatsuwho had died just 7 days after Chapters 10 and 11 initially aired. After being abducted in the desert, Appa is traded to a Fire Nation circus, where the trainer whips, humiliates, and generally mistreats him. He eventually escapes with the help of a small boy. He later unwillingly fights a Boarcupine; he wins but is badly wounded. By fortune, Suki and the Kyoshi warriors come across Appa and help him recover from his injuries, but the warriors are attacked by Azula and her team. Appa is forced to flee at Suki's urging, lest he be hurt in the ensuing battle between Azula's forces and the Avatar: The Last Airbender 2 Warriors. Dispirited, confused, and longing for Aang, Appa returns to his childhood home at the Eastern Air Temple, where he discovers a mysterious guru, Pathik, has taken residence in the ruins. The guru gains his trust and imparts to him Aang's location at Ba Sing Se, with a message for Avatar: The Last Airbender 2 attached to his horn. Appa arrives at Ba Sing Se, but just short of reuniting with Aang he is ambushed and captured by Long Feng, leaving the footprint that Momo found. The season was produced by and aired on Nickelodeonwhich Avatar: The Last Airbender 2 owned by Viacom. Animating Race The Production and Ascription of Asian-ness in the Animation of Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra Francis M. Agnoli Submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) University of East Anglia School of Art, Media and American Studies April 2020 This copy of the thesis has been supplied on condition that anyone who consults it is understood to recognise that its copyright rests with the author and that use of any information derived there from must be in accordance with current UK Copyright Law. In addition, any quotation or extract must include full attribution. 2 Abstract How and by what means is race ascribed to an animated body? My thesis addresses this question by reconstructing the production narratives around the Nickelodeon television series Avatar: The Last Airbender (2005-08) and its sequel The Legend of Korra (2012-14). Through original and preexisting interviews, I determine how the ascription of race occurs at every stage of production. To do so, I triangulate theories related to race as a social construct, using a definition composed by sociologists Matthew Desmond and Mustafa Emirbayer; re-presentations of the body in animation, drawing upon art historian Nicholas Mirzoeff’s concept of the bodyscape; and the cinematic voice as described by film scholars Rick Altman, Mary Ann Doane, Michel Chion, and Gianluca Sergi. Even production processes not directly related to character design, animation, or performance contribute to the ascription of race. Therefore, this thesis also references writings on culture, such as those on cultural appropriation, cultural flow/traffic, and transculturation; fantasy, an impulse to break away from mimesis; and realist animation conventions, which relates to Paul Wells’ concept of hyper-realism.

However, it turns out that there used to Avatar: The Last Airbender - Smoke and Shadow Part 3 a fourth season planned out — and it could have changed everything. Avatar: The Last Airbender writer Aaron Ehasz sat down for a chat with Den of Geekduring which he revealed that the ending to Avatar was briefly very different from what we have today. Ehasz also suggested the season would have seen Iroh communicating with the spirit world once more, as well as a possible reincarnation of Gyatso in the form of a new airbender. However, Ehasz stressed that he is satisfied with the ending as it exists now. Who needs a tea chat with Uncle Iroh today? Interestingly enough, M. Ehasz claimed that the focus on the film meant less time spent preparing for a fourth season. Humorously enough, Dev Patel was once spotted apologizing to a fan for the Shyamalan adaptation. In a recently resurfaced clipPatel can be seen signing an autograph for a fan on Avatar merchandise. While the first attempt at a live-action adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender failed spectacularly, Netflix is jockeying to capitalize on the renewed interest in the franchise with a new adaptation. However, they naturally also feel some trepidation given the last attempt.

  • Hey Arnold, Avatar: the Last
Subversive Masculinity in Children’s Animation: Hey Arnold, Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Loud House by Kristen L. Sales A Thesis Submitted in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Science in Media and Communication Middle Tennessee State University February 2019 Thesis Committee: Chair Dr. Jane Marcellus Dr. Jennifer Woodard Dr. Mark Jackson Abstract Many existing studies of gender and gender representation in children’s animated media focus on women. These studies tend to focus on breaking down and analyzing the strict binaries of the representation of female characters. Studies of masculinity are often limited to a discussion of toxic male behaviors, with masculinity relegated to a point of contention instead of a basis of study. Using hegemonic masculinity as a theoretical framework, this thesis examines the representation of masculinity in three characters in children’s animated media—Arnold from Hey Arnold, Aang from Avatar: The Last Airbender and Lincoln from The Loud House. Each of these characters subverts hegemonic or toxic masculinity. This thesis examines how each character does so. Using frame theory, the thesis will examine both what is said and what is not said within each character’s narrative. This thesis also analyzes what is seen within the narrative of the series that makes the characters’ depictions of masculinity subversive or not, including what the characters don’t do as well as what they do. ii Table of Contents I. ABSTRACT Exploring the Philosophical and Cultural Significance of Avatar: The Last Airbender Sreya Bhattaru Director: Dr. Anne-Marie Schultz, Ph.D. The Nickelodeon television series Avatar: The Last Airbender is a popular children’s show, which aired from 2005-2008. My thesis explores the various philosophical traditions and cultural significance of the show to display how it would be considered ‘appropriate’ media by Plato, and therefore, another text of philosophy, introducing the audience to various, realistic depictions of human nature, and virtue ethics. First, I discuss the friendships in the show, while relating them to the different friendships outlined by Aristotle. Friendships were categorized as either having virtue or exhibiting qualities that resembled virtue. In my second chapter, I discover the different eastern and western philosophical influences of the show. I look at Hinduism, Taoism, Confucianism, Kung Fu, and the Presocratic philosophers, Plato, Aristotle, and Heidegger. The show embeds these philosophical traditions in a very respectful and never-done-before way. I found the show to be a potential model for a new type of storytelling that would encompass more complex thoughts about traditional notions of good versus evil. In my third chapter, I analyze a few key characters and their moral formations while using Aristotle and Machiavelli as the framework to view their actions and individual journeys. In my final chapter, I interpret the various contemporary, real-world topics that the show masterfully embeds into various episodes. These include the environment, disabilities, censorship, Asian representation in the media, feminism, and imperialism. I also reflect on my thoughts on the show, both when I saw it as a child and later as an adult, and other viewers’ thoughts on the show, to display the impact it has on people’s lives.

"No, hes tired, weve been flying for a long time now" replied Aang. Sokka, Katara, Aang and mo-mo were flying over a large ocean on appas back. Only, the waves were getting bigger, the rain heavier and the wind stronger. Soon it developed into a ferocious storm. "We need to land somewhere, or well get blown out of the sky" shouted Aang, above the roaring wind. "Hey! Look! Theres an island over there!" exclaimed Katara, pointing. Sokka looked. The island was in the shape of a moon. It reminded him of Princess Yue. His spirits fell. Appa sped up slightly as they got closer to the island, and finally landed. "Ill go get some firewood, Katara, can you get some fish? Oh and Sokka, can you set up camp in that cave over there?" asked Aang. Sokka jumped up at the chance of being alone for a while. He walked towards the cave, with Appa close behind. Sokka sighed. Appa licked him, as if to cheer him up. "Thanks, Appa" Sokka muttered. Sokka quickly set up camp, then walked outside. He lay on the ground and looked up at the stars, the moon.

  • Predator, Prey, and Obstacles
Project 05 - Predator, Prey, and Obstacles INTRODUCTION The purpose of this assignment was for us to create a simulation that uses a predator (consumer), prey (resource), and obstacles(places agents can't go). To do this, we used the design framework from project 04 but added complexity to the ways that the agents acted and interacted with each other. SOLUTION I created a simulation of Appa from Avatar the Last Airbender attempting to eat apples from trees, while avoiding deserts and annoying fire benders like Zuko. The hardest part of this project was organizing the updateState for each agent and figuring out a system for how the agents (Appa and the trees) would change state. It was very hard to balance my simulation since there were so many variables. APPA Appa, my consumer agent, changes forms depending on the number of apples in his tummy. He initializes to the landscape with 45 apples and as a category 3 (pictured furthest to the left). If he has less than 40 apples in his stomach, Appa becomes hungry and opens his mouth. If he has less than 10 apples in his stomach, Appa becomes sad and sick. If Appa has no apples in his tummy, he goes on a rebellion and leaves the landscape. If Appa has more than 100 apples in his stomach, he becomes armored Appa. If there are apple trees around him at his current location, he doesn't move and eats five apples. Otherwise, Appa attempts to move. If the location he is trying to move to is blocked by the desert agent, he stays put.

The penultimate scene in this episode is of Fire Lord Ozai’s coronation, and a recurring object in this episode is a pearl dagger retrieved from the initial Siege of Ba Sing Se. The line “A man’s past is his business” is spoken by the patriarch of one family in this episode; that man is Gansu, and his family is harassed by a group of four thugs at whom Gansu’s son throws an egg when this episode begins. Several flashbacks in this episode center on the royal family, including one of (*) Ursa’s last contact with her son. While one character sleeps in a barn, that character’s dual swords are stolen; those dual swords are later used to enhance that character’s firebending in a battle against a man who earthbends using a pair of hammers.
