MOSES LONG, YORK – DIARIES (BOOK 1) Page 1 Jan 1842 1842 January 1 st Commenced this work on Saturday the First Day of January in the year of our Lord one thousand Eight hundred & Forty Two - Arose in the morning as usual, prepared to make calls. Started about 9½ O.clock A.M. Made a few calls afsociated with coffee etc. harnessed the team, rode in various directions in the mean time making calls which were accompanied with abundance of refreshments together with profusions of Hot Coffee – In the evening made a call, attended Singing School at B. Church & also a Party at B.N.Long’s returned home before 9 O.clock in the evening upon such return found W.H. Carle there – Sunday 2 nd Remained at home through the day. also the evening – during which time read from various authors etc etc - Monday 3 rd Went to the village A.M. received $3.dollars of H. Osborn for rent – soon after returned home where I remained during the day – called at O.D. Roots in the evening - Tuesday 4 th Remained at home during the day also the evening – A.M. received call from W.H. Carle who remained to dinner – O. Presbrey called P.M. got his watch – Toward evening at the return of Henry from School received a letter from C. A. Webber – spent the evening at home reading - Wednesday 5 th Set out for Mt Morris in the morning with Dr J Long – on our way visited a number patients – arrived at our place of destination about noon – Dr Childs – After dinner the Doctors (Long & Childs) went up stairs to see Harriet who was very sick – after their return I Page 2 Jan 1842 Called upon Harriet – we had a sociable converse – Toward evening commenced our Journey to York – called at Greggsville warmed & Liquored up then called to visit a patient across the way – after this returned to York about 9. O.clock in the evening Thursday 6 th Went to the Centre in the morning subsequent to business returned – went to Brother L’s with the family load. Arrived about 11. O.clock A.M. remained during the day – returned home about the time night cast her sable curtain over the fa_ of the Earth – Through the evening very merry with conversation and music - Friday 7 th In the morning wrote letter to L.D. Childs of Baltimore deposited the same in the P.O. While there gave N. Stewart P.M. two dollars to send for the Saturday Courier – soon after returned home and there remained during the day – Went to the Dr’s but found him not – returned & spent the evening very agreeable - Saturday 8 th Called at Dr Long’s in the morning - thence to the village – after executing a few errands returned home – P.M. Isaac & Polly called – Toward evening went after mother to the village with the horse & cutter etc etc – spent the evening at home - 1 Sunday 9 th Sick through, medicine – in the evening N. Delano called - Monday 10 th P.M. went to the village returned – in the evening Childs & Pamelia called - Tuesday 11 th Called at the Centre A.M. Attended Singing School in the evening - Wednesday 12 th Remained at home through the day - Isaac O.Buxton – Polly & Sarah H. spent the evening here – also George A. C - Thursday 13 th P.M. went to the Centre – called at Page 3 Jan 1842 Mrs Stone’s got the Fourth Vol of Scotts Bible called at the P.O. paid the residue of Postage on N.Y. Mirror Vol 20 – In the evening attended Singing School - Friday 14 th Nothing special during the day – In the evening attended a party at Col Holloway’s - received a Philipena Present from Miss J. Rice - Gave one to Mifs P. Stone – Returned at 11½ O.clock – Saturday 15 th P.M. there bring snow sufficient took a ride with Harriet – In the evening called at O.D. Roots - Sunday 16 th Sick – through the day – Monday 17 th A.M. went to the village – returned – In the evening Childs & Pamelia called – after their departure took a dose of caster oil & went to bed - Tuesday 18 th P.M. Buggy ride with Catherine – In the evening went to Temperance meeting – Wednesday 19 th P.M. Harnefsed a horse to the Buggy went to the village – having procured company rode a few miles – returned exchanged company rode again & returned another exchange and went home – Nothing further worthy of account - Thursday 20 th Remained at home through the day & evening read a few Pages Lockes’ Essays & the Mirror etc - Friday 21 st Called at Dr Longs in the morning got a Box of Pills & handful of Powders – thence to the village – made various calls on Main Street particularly at the Grocery where I spent some time expounding the cause of Temperance with a Tea Totaler – from thence returned home – Saturday 22 nd Sick & Lazy – Took Medicine 3 times Page 4 Jan 1842 2 during the day – very uneasy in the evening – Sunday 23 rd Obeyed the voice of the Doctor in respect to Medicine – through out the day – had a snuffing spree in the evening - Monday 24 th Spent part of the day reading – In the evening attended Temperance meeting - Tuesday 25 th P.M. went to the village trooped about sometime and returned – attended Temperance meeting in the evening - Wednesday 26 th In the morning wrote letter to the Editor of NY Mirror to have the paper discontinued – P.M. with Catherine set out for Fowlerville – having gone as far as the village, turned our course & went to Mt Morris to see Harriet who as on the border of death – after short tarry returned to York - Thursday 27 th Called at the Doctors in the morning – having got directions for the day went to the village wandered about awhile & returned home – Toward evening news came that Harriet had breathed her last – She died last evening about 9. O.clock at Mt Morris - Friday 28 th Confined to the bed from the effect of a large blister – Emplastrum Epispasticum aplied the evening previous – Mrs Stone staid with me through the day – our people having gone to attend the Funeral of Harriet Childs of Mt Morris - Saturday 29 th Received call from Chester & Julia Rice in the morning – A call from the Doctor in the evening who dealt out his medicine with a sort of profusion – Caster Oil etc - Sunday 30 th Took C. oil in the morning Doctor called before M brought a splendid lump of Magnesia of which I eat unsparingly – grew better toward evening - Monday 31 st Remained quiet through the day - Page 5 Feb 1842 Tuesday 1 st Enjoyed a short walk in the morning accompanied by the rays of the sun & refreshing breeze – Isaac called A.M. the Doctor P.M. - Wednesday 2 nd A.M. walked to the village & back – quite a walk for me under present circumstances – In the evening Doctor – Josiah & others called - Thursday 3 rd Aunt Sarah & Husband called in the morning after sometime spent socially they departed – In the after part of the day commenced model of a Self propelling chariot – Spent the evening at home - Friday 4 th Remained at home. P.M. Mrs L. Root calls soon after Delano called & soon came Sophia – After tea we had a social play with our Instruments and in the evening a regular Soiree – Company retired about 11 O.clock - 3 Saturday 5 th Called at the neighbors P.M. returned & found Josiah & Cornelia at our house who spent some time - Sunday 6 th Perused the Mirror in the morning – Toward the close of the day rode down to view the wide spread waters of the Genesee – returned about dark – violent pain in the head in the evening Monday 7 th Continued laboring on my wagon all day At early evening came L D Childs from Mt Morris - who spent the night - Tuesday 8 th Visited with L.D.C. until quite late in P.M. at which time he went to the village – Before his departure C. Rice called & took tea – after tea or about dark Delano called for the girls to go to Singing School – at their departure our company all left – In the evening played a few games at BackGammon - Wednesday 9 th A.M. received a call from G W. Brown Page 6 Feb 1842 After dinner called at OD Roots soon after returned home – L D Childs & Doctor came about dark – the former remained the night - Thursday 10 th A.M. went to the village made various calls dined at B. N. Long’s – after called at the P.O.gave N. Stewart three dollars to send for Graham Lady’s & Gents Magazine – returned home at 3. at 4. O.clock Miss M. Cook called – soon after came Miss P. Stone – Early in the evening Georg & C. Cook called – soon after Mr N Blackmer from Wheatland called – Quite sociable through the evening – About 8. O.clock Childs P S. called Part of said company remained the night - Friday 11 th Toward the close of the day took a walk among the stately trees of the forest – viewed the remains of an ancient sugar house among the lefty maples – At Henry’s return from School he brought my Mirror & Journal of Health which came unexpected - Saturday 12 th A.M. rode on horseback P.M. cleaned a watch – Spend the evening at home - Sunday 13 th Perused Graham Magazine – Spent the evening at O.D.
