  • North Wales and Anglesey Part 1
North Wales and Anglesey Part 1 Snowdonia viewed from Plas Newydd, Anglesey, across the Menai Strait. Despite being a 'Jones', I know less about the 'land of my fathers' than I really should. It could well be the country's (deserved!) reputation for excessive rainfall that has kept me away in the past - such prejudice has denied me the delights of what is undoubtedly amongst of the most beautiful scenery in the UK. We hired a cottage for a week in the village of Abergwyngregyn, just off the A55 North Wales Expressway between Bangor and Conwy. The cottage has been beautifully restored, though alas for me that did not include raising the ceiling beams, with which my head frequently collided. Consequently the first three days of our stay were punctuated with some most 'un-Christian' language! Plas Newydd Our first excursion was the National Trust property of Plas Newydd in Anglesey, a beautiful country property set in extensive grounds on the Menai Strait not far from the road bridge to the mainland. It is the country seat of the 7th Marquess of Anglesey, whose family still retain rooms at the property. The first Marquess (then Lord Uxbridge) distinguished himself at Waterloo, where he led the charge of the heavy cavalry against d'Erlon's column. He was hit by one of the last cannon shots of the day. According to anecdote, he was close to Wellington when his leg was hit, and exclaimed, "By God, sir, I've lost my leg!" — to which Wellington replied, "By God, sir, so you have!" The remains of his leg were later amputated.

68th IFLA Council and General Conference August 18-24, 2002 Code Number: 048-127-E Division Number: V Professional Group: Newspapers RT Joint Meeting with: - Meeting Number: 127 Simultaneous Interpretation: - Print, language and identity: newspapers in Wales since 1804 Aled Jones University of Wales, Aberystwyth, UK Before the coming of the age of the popular New Journalism in the 1890s, Welsh print culture consisted of a rich variety of monthly journals, specialist magazines, newspapers and broadsides as well as the almanacs, theological dissertations, political tracts, travel guides, biographies and fiction that made up the Welsh book trade. Nineteenth-century newspapers, however, were themselves highly diverse forms, featuring not only news items from Wales and beyond, but also letters, poems, reviews, features, short stories, serialised novels, articles on music, art, the human and natural sciences, acres of religious exegesis and, of course, square miles of political comment, theory and analysis. Much of this prodigious literary activity remains to be recovered from the five hundred or so newspaper titles which were produced in Wales during the nineteenth century, and which are now conserved in our libraries and archives. A people's literature may be said to have been buried there, and the purpose of this paper is to help in the unearthing and the appreciation of its many forms. The origins of Welsh periodical publishing are to be found in the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries, when, from London and later from Shrewsbury, Thomas Jones brought out his Welsh-language Almanac, as well as an English-language Collection of All the Material News.

Migrant Culture Maintenance: The Welsh Experience in Poultney, Rutland County, 1900-1940 The Welsh comprised a highly visible ethno-linguistic community in Poultney, based on religion, language, culture, family ties, and participation in the area’s slate industry. BY Robert Llewellyn Tyler he old slate-quarrying town of Poultney is situated on the western border of Rutland County in Vermont. It was chartered by Benning Wentworth on September 21, 1761, and the town was organized on March 8, 1775.1 Poultney had few industries prior to 1800, and the town’s population grew slowly: numbering 1,121 in 1791; 1,950 in 1810; 1,909 in 1830; and 2,329 by 1850. In 1851, Daniel and S. E. Hooker opened the first slate quarry about three miles north of Poultney village and the industry grew rapidly, assisted by the arrival of the railroad in the same year. By 1860, Poultney could boast 16 slate companies employing some 450 workers and, in the words of contem- porary observers, by 1886 the prospects of the town were good: “Since 1875, it is said, the slate business of Poultney has more than doubled in volume, and has also greatly increased in profits. It is comparatively in its infancy yet, however, and if properly developed, will be a source of great wealth to the town.”2 The town drew migrants from across the Atlantic, initially from the countries of the United Kingdom and later from central, southern, and . Robert Llewellyn Tyler is a visiting professor at the University of Wales, New- port. He is the author of The Welsh in an Australian Gold Town (2011) and is pres- ently researching Welsh communities in the U.S.

  • Easter Programmes on the BBC 2010
Easter programmes on the BBC On Good Friday, renowned historian Bettany Hughes embarks on a fascinating journey to uncover the meaning of Jesus’ death on the Cross, The Day Jesus Died (Friday 2 April, BBC One, 9am). To explore just why the execution of one man 2,000 years ago is still so important today, Bettany enlists a cast of leading figures from British Christianity, including Rowan Williams, the Archbishop of Canterbury; John Sentamu, the Archbishop of York; Tom Wright, the Bishop of Durham; and Vincent Nichols, the Archbishop of Westminster. On Easter eve, Easter from Kings (Saturday 3 April, BBC Two, 5.40pm) is a service of music and readings from the Chapel of King’s College, Cambridge. The world- famous choir sing seasonal hymns, Easter carols and well-known choral music, including Panis Angelicus, Mozart’s Ave Verum Corpus, and extracts from Stainer’s Crucifixion and Handel’s Messiah. This is followed on Saturday evening by Private Life of an Easter Masterpiece (Saturday 3 April, BBC Two, 6.55pm), exploring The Descent from the Cross by Rogier van der Weyden, which has been delighting art lovers for hundreds of years. Susie Nash, Head of the Renaissance Section of the Courtauld Institute Of Art in London, describes it as “the greatest work of northern art of the 15th century and certainly the most influential”, but what is the secret history of this world-renowned painting? The programme delves into the turbulent times of this iconic portrayal of Christ, charting its history from its inception and rise to fame to reportedly surviving a shipwreck, and in more recent times becoming one of the first paintings to be featured on Google Earth.
