Last collection of artist posters, The Huntington Library, San Marino, California. Provenance This collection forms part of the Jay T. Last Collection of Graphic Arts and Social History, which was donated to the Huntington Library by Jay T. Last in 2005 as a gift in progress. The bulk of the artist posters were transferred to the Library between 2010 and 2012. Background The Jay T. Last collection is an unparalleled archive of printed paper artifacts that documents American lithographic, social, and business history. The collection began in the early 1970s when physicist and Silicon Valley pioneer Jay Last moved to Southern California and started collecting citrus box labels he found at local flea markets and rummage sales. As his collection grew, Last realized that these labels conveyed important information about commercial printing, graphic design, and social history, and he expanded his collection to include other forms of American visual culture. Today this collection contains more than 200,000 lithographic prints, posters, and ephemera of mostly nineteenth- and early twentieth- century American origin and represents works by more than five hundred lithographic companies. Scope and Content The Jay T. Last collection of artist posters contains over 370 printed works from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The bulk of the materials date from 1890 to 1900 and advertise American literary books and periodicals. Bicycles, household goods, and other products are also advertised. Materials are fully inventoried, and all printers, artists, and publishers are indexed by name. Notable illustrators represented in the collection include Will Bradley, Maynard Dixon, J. J. Gould, Edward Penfield, Ethel Reed, and Louis Rhead. The collection includes over 100 posters collected by illustrator Curtis Wager-Smith (1870-1950), some with inscriptions to her from the artist. Jay T. Last Collection of Artist priJLC_ART 2 Posters: Finding Aid Subjects addressed within the collection include art styles, book and literary journal publication, advertising, and the intersections between them, especially during the last decade of the 19th century. The images encompass the popularization of Art Nouveau in the United States, as well as the advertising strategies employed by various industries in the 19th and early 20th centuries. As graphic materials, the items offer evidence of visual culture and printmaking techniques and trends, as well as information about the artists, engravers, lithographers, printers, and publishers involved in the creative process. • VINTAGE POSTERS FEBRUARY 25 Our Annual Winter Auction of Vintage Posters Features an Exceptional Selection of Rare and Important Art Nouveau Posters
SCALING NEW HEIGHTS There is much to report from the Swann offices these days as new benchmarks are set and we continue to pioneer new markets. Our fall 2013 season saw some remarkable sales results, including our top-grossing Autographs auction to date—led by a handwritten Mozart score and a collection of Einstein letters discussing his general theory of relativity, which brought $161,000 each. Check page 7 for more post-sale highlights from the past season. On page 7 you’ll also find a brief tribute to our beloved Maps specialist Gary Garland, who is retiring after nearly 30 years with Swann, and the scoop on his replacement, Alex Clausen. Several special events are in the works for our winter and spring sales, including a talk on the roots of African-American Fine Art that coincides with our February auction, a partnership with the Library Company of Philadelphia and a discussion of the growing collecting field of vernacular photography. Make sure we have your e-mail address so you’ll receive our invites. The New Rochelle Art Association 100 Years 1912-2012 Graphic design by Jesse M. Sanchez Edited and written by Theresa Beyer Historical images courtesy of The New Rochelle Public Library ©2012 The New Rochelle Art Association BACKGROUND In 1912 New Rochelle was a fast growing suburb. Already in 1899 New Rochelle had incorporated as a city. While New Rochelle was one of the earliest communities in the area, having been founded by the Huguenots in 1688, New York City residents first discovered New Rochelle in large numbers with the advent of the steam boat, especially the one that took them to the pleasure gardens at Glen Island and the Neptune House resort. Soon, planned resi- dential areas like Rochelle Park (1885) and Rochelle Heights (1905) sprang up. New Rochelle’s popula- tion doubled between 1900 and 1910 and would double again between 1910 and 1930. The vil- lage the Huguenots had founded with large tracts of farm land was rapidly being sub-divided into residential communities. A system of trolleys, com- muter railroads, and later the parkways made New Rochelle easily accessible. The New York area had always been friendly to artists. In the 19th century painters of the Hudson River School settled here. Many artists traveled to Europe and began to paint in the style of the im- pressionists while others were more influenced by traditional Beaux Arts training. Meanwhile, with the turn of the century, the highly influential real- ism of the Ash Can School promoted the idea that art didn’t have to portray just beautiful objects.

August 1936 issue of the magazine: color pictorial cover, color and black and white illustrations, 40pp, 11 3/4 x 8 3/4 inches. Good condition. Life Magazine, Inc. NY. 08- 1936. Of particular interest in this magazine is the political commentary provided in the satirical poem "The King's Croquet Ground (With King Roosevelt, White Knight Landon, Duchess Farley, and Alice Public")" by Arthur L. Lippmann, a poem which lampoons the 'three long years' of F.D. Roosevelt's presidency and the "gay electioneering season" to come, accompanied by a full page color picture showing Roosevelt and Landon in the setting of Alice in Wonderland. The color illustration is by Gregor Duncan who worked for Life until it ceased publication in November of 1936. The cover illustration by Dorothy McRay is of a woman in jodhpurs preparing to ride a wild horse.
