Lecture Abstract

Global Trends in Higher Education

Postsecondary education has been fundamentally transformed in the past half- century by a combination of massification—the dramatic increase in enrollments— and by the global knowledge economy. These two forces pull in opposition directions and have created crises everywhere. This discussion will define the two key forces and then analyze their implications for postsecondary education globally—including such issues as the role of research, challenges for access, the role of rankings and increasing differentiation and inequality in postsecondary systems, the global role of English, and other factors.
