RCCC Annual Report 2013-2014v20-05 8 Reports

Board By Willie Nicoll (Chair) and Bruce Crawford (CEO)

The board of directors have continued to focus on their mandate, which is to manage the strategic direction of the RCCC and oversee the governance of the game. The directors take their responsibilities seriously and have worked with staff and volunteers to deliver the objectives set out in the strategic plan 2011-2015. The directors are all committed to the board and the high level of attendance, at 95% reflects this.

The board has continued to monitor potential risks to the organisation and made steps to mitigate risk through the risk register and action plan. The Chief Executive is responsible for operational matters and is charged with managing and reporting risks to the board.

The board has worked to ensure that all of the ice rinks are compliant with EU legislation on the use of R22 coolant chemicals, which will become banned in January 2015. This has been completed fully apart from Moray Ice Rink, which remains the only facility that has not yet converted to new coolants.

A number of special projects were approved by the board for the benefit of the organisation and these included:  Digitisation of the annuals for all 175 years into searchable PDF format, now available for purchase on one DVD.  Investing in a collections management system for recording all of the significant curling related items held by us. The items are catalogued under the headings of art, history and library and key words can be used to search for items, dates or themes. The collection is growing and will take years to complete, it can be seen at: www.ehive.com/account/5033 and is under the auspices of our charitable arm, the Scottish Curling Trust.  The Try Curling legacy programme seeking to capitalise on the upsurge in interest on the back of the Olympic and Paralympic Games.  Improvement to the various brands under our control: Scottish Curling, Curling’s Cool, Skill Awards and Try Curling.

We have continued to search for new premises for the RCCC and incorporate space for housing the collection of memorabilia, art, equipment, trophies and records in a museum. A number of properties have been assessed and to date no solution has been found, that meets the requirements set out by the board. Graham McWiggan is stepping down from the board this year but has volunteered to continue to offer his support and expertise in this area.

Our commitment to equality has been developed over recent years and it was pleasing to pass the preliminary level of the Equality Standard for sport in April 2014. Several policies were reviewed in the process of achieving this level and these included updating the Equality Policy, Equality Action Plan and we will continue to work in this area as we strive to share the values and practices with clubs and members.

The board have mapped out the process for the creation of the next strategic plan for the RCCC and it will commence soon after the AGM, and will consult committees, staff and members with an aim to have the new strategy in place by the end of October.

We would like to thank all of the volunteers and staff who have made the RCCC continue to be a successful organisation and we will continue to serve our members in the best interest of the sport of curling.

RCCC Annual Report 2013-2014v20-05 9 Finance Alastair Hibbert (Finance Manager) and Bruce Crawford (CEO)

This year the board of directors of the RCCC have changed the financial year end from 31 st March to 30th April. As a result the period covered in these accounts is 13 months. The reason for this change was primarily to be able to close the books when a full season’s activity has concluded and to enable better management of budgets when the transactions in the final couple of weeks of April are considerably fewer than in March. The impact of this is that it has previously distorted the bottom line by including a second April which is a month with little income but moderate expenditure.

You may recall that in the financial report last year (2012/2013) there was an extraordinary surplus of £84,000. The budget planned for the year was to be a deficit of £84,000 for 12 months and £115,000 for the 13 month period. The position at the end of this year, as you will see, shows a deficit in line with the budget. A number of factors have come in to play in the year to 30 th April 2014 to create this planned deficit.

The year-end loss includes a portion of the additional running costs for the thirteenth month which amount to £33,000. In addition to the extra month’s costs, there was a plan to invest £82,000 some projects this year that would balance with the previous year’s surplus. The additional expenditure projects were digitising 175 years of RCCC Annuals, pension provision for employees, art restoration, branding, clothing, additional expenditure on Try Curling initiatives to maximise legacy benefits from Winter Olympics and Paralympics.

The Board is comfortable with this outcome and we anticipate that the corporation tax paid for the year 2012/2013 amounting to £20,000 will be recovered. Next year we expect to see a more stable financial position, with the changes made making the budgeting more effective. A full analysis of the income and expenditure for the year will be provided in a visual format on the website as required by 23rd May and for members to see at the AGM.

Areas Standing Committee Alan Durno (President | 2013-2014)

The committee consists of two representatives from the 10 Areas, the President, Vice-President, CEO and Board Chairman. We hold regular meetings throughout the season and two Joint meetings with members of the Board and the Ladies’ Standing Committee. We have a number of sub-committees which have at least one member of the ASC on each, dependent on their interests and skills. These sub-committees have a varying number of meetings throughout the year as required.

During the season we had a number of curling challenge matches, with the true spirit of the game a priority. Firstly, we had the Priestfield Cup which is played for, between the ASC and LSC. This year we played 4 x 2 end games with the ASC victorious.

In December, we had our annual match against The Royal Company of Archers at Murrayfield Curling Rink. This turned out to be a very sociable day with the ASC narrowly winning by 2 shots. In January we travelled to Inverness for our match against Area 10 for the Tamnavulin Trophy. The five Provinces of Area 10 made the most of home ice and won. We also had to field teams to play in the Four Nations at Lanarkshire Ice Rink hosted this year by the Irish Curling Association. We asked interested members to put their names forward and then the teams were picked. This year, we were successful in winning the Tom Ballantyne and Connie Miller trophies against England, and the Marshall Millennium Trophy against Ireland. Unfortunately, we were unable to make a clean sweep as Wales won the Big Bertha Stone.

RCCC Annual Report 2013-2014v20-05 10 Twenty male curlers from Switzerland will be touring around Scotland from 8th - 22nd November 2014.

Harry Dodds, Alan Muirhead, Frank White and Peter Fraser have completed their terms of office on the ASC and we thank them for their time and contribution.

I would like to say a special thank you to Ladies’ Branch President Fiona Hardie and Vice President David Henderson for their tremendous support throughout the year.

Thank you to the ASC members for their contributions to the ASC and sub-committees and for attending many competitions and events during the year. Finally, my thanks to all of the staff at Cairnie House for all their hard work and for looking after me so well this year.

Ladies’ Standing Committee Fiona Hardie (Ladies’ Branch President | 2013-2014)

During the past year the Ladies’ Standing Committee (LSC) members have continued to represent the lady curlers of Scotland at our regular meetings. The LSC comprises of 18 Centre Representatives and the executive committee and this year we have held seven meetings and two joint meetings with the RCCC Board and Areas Standing Committee (ASC). We have also had Ladies’ Branch representation on RCCC sub-committees. Within the RCCC, there is an ongoing structure review and we in the LSC are keen to be actively involved.

At the beginning of the season, in order to mark the occasion of the 175th anniversary of the RCCC, Ladies’ Branch celebrated by inviting all past presidents of Ladies’ Branch to join us for our annual Ladies’ Branch . 14 past presidents joined us for lunch and 10 of them curled, the 46 ladies present had a very enjoyable afternoon with all ladies being presented with the 175th anniversary pin.

Our other annual competitions were well organised and successful. On 12th November, we played at Perth against the ASC for The Priestfield Cup but unfortunately were defeated. From 24th to 27th February, the Henderson Bishop Trophy was played at , my home ice rink, and it was won by four local young curlers. On 11th March, the Morton Trophy Final was played at Kirkcaldy Ice Rink. The Under and Over’s competition failed to gain entries this year and it was decided to hold a National Ladies’ Branch Bonspiel in October or November. This competition would accept individual entries and will be to all lady members.

In January, ladies participated in the Four Nations hosted by Ireland at Lanarkshire Ice Rink and regained the Connie Miller Trophy from England.

In November, 16 Scottish Ladies had a very successful 10-day tour to Sweden, winning by 18 shots.

As President, I had the honour of representing Ladies’ Branch both at home and abroad. I attended the Scottish Curling Senior Mixed Championship at Stranraer, the Double Rink Championship at Stranraer, the Scottish Curling Junior Championships at Aberdeen, the Scottish Curling Senior Women’s Championship at Lanarkshire Ice Rink, the Scottish Curling Women’s Championship at Perth, the National Masters at Greenacres and the Scottish Wheelchair Curling Championships at .

In September, I attended the European Mixed Curling Championships at Murrayfield and in November, I travelled to Stavanger, Norway to attend the European Curling Championships, where Scottish Ladies team, , , Vicki Adams, and won the silver medal, which I was delighted to present. I represented the RCCC at the World Junior Curling Championship in Flims, Switzerland where the boys’ team skipped by won silver and I presented the team with their ‘keeper’ stones. President Alan Durno who also attended presented the boys with their medals. I also represented the RCCC at the World Women’s Curling

RCCC Annual Report 2013-2014v20-05 11 Championship in Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada.

I attended the second week of the Olympic Winter Games in Sochi, Russia where it was a great privilege to be there and watch some very exciting curling and I was of course delighted to see both GB teams receive their medals.

Ladies’ Branch continue to sell merchandise to raise money to go towards funding incoming tours, competition prizes and gifts for our medallists and we are grateful to everyone who has supported us by buying goods and/or allowing us to sell items at their centre or event over the last year.

Ladies’ competitions throughout Scotland continue to be well supported and I would like to thank the volunteers on our LSC who willingly give their time to support our events.

Ladies’ Branch have received an invitation from the Canadian Curling Association for 24 ladies to tour Central Canada in November 2015.

During my year it has been a great honour to represent the RCCC and to support all teams and supporters at national and international level and I am very pleased to be able to report that all the athletes representing Scotland were wonderful ambassadors for our sport of curling.

The organisation of competitions is an important part of the RCCC’s activities and as such was deemed that it should be within the remit of an employee. Sheila Swan (Development Manager) assumed responsibility for Competitions with assistance from (Competitions Advisor).

The Committee set out a schedule of meetings with allocated dates for specific topics - Draws, Bidding, Rules and Annual Review.

It was with regret that the RCCC accepted the resignation of Colin Hamilton in December 2013, from his position as Competitions Advisor. Colin was active in all aspects of competition organisation for many years and we thank him for his dedicated time and effort in establishing and improving RCCC Competitions throughout this time.

This season the RCCC invited Competitors and Coaches to complete a survey after each competition to gather feedback and opinion to enable us to deliver competitions and events which support the needs of our membership. The feedback we have received has identified areas for improvement and we will consider areas to develop over the summer months.

It would be impossible to run these extremely successful competitions without the support of a great number of people and organisations; various RCCC Committees (Competitions, Umpires and Rules), numerous Local Organising Committees, facilities and their staff, sponsors and the very many volunteers who support our competitions by umpiring, time-clocking, line scoring and reporting. Thank you all for your continued help and support.

International Relations Bruce Crawford (CEO) We continue to be involved in the governance of curling at an international level through our representatives at World Curling Federation and European Curling Federation.

The key people involved are: Kate Caithness (Edzell CC) who chairs the WCF; Hew Chalmers (Stranraer CC) who is a board member of the ECF and is on the WCF Competitions and Rules Commission; Edith Hazard (Airleywight Ladies CC) is a board member of the ECF; Michael McCreadie (Braehead Wheelchair CC) is on the WCF Athlete’s Commission; Willie Nicoll is a

RCCC Annual Report 2013-2014v20-05 17 member of the WCF Governance Commission; Mike Ferguson (Edzell CC) and Bruce Crawford (Abbotsford CS) are both reps for us on the ECF and WCF.

At the WCF Congress and AGM in 2013, the members approved the new constitution for the WCF and the first AGM under the new rules will be in September 2014. We hope that the contributions of members through the governance review will see a more dynamic and accountable federation that represents our whole community and encourages growth and development of the sport. All of the reps have contributed to the debates on development activities, anti-doping and bribery in sport. At the WCF Congress the RCCC recognised the International Ambassadors and presentations were made by our President Alan Durno.

In December 2013 at the AGM of the European Curling Federation in Stavanger, Norway, the members were informed of the continuing progress to wind up the ECF and pass responsibility for competitions to the WCF. This is in track to be completed in December 2014.

Michael McCreadie has been active on the Athlete’s Commission examining changes to classification and format of play for all athletes. Hew Chalmers has attended meetings of the Competitions and Rules Commission and is contributing to the debates on potential changes to rules and format of competitions. All of this work with other nations in the international setting is important for the future of the sport and we have been fortunate to receive valuable support from UK Sport. We recognise the commitment given by our experienced group of members who represent us in our international work. Mike Ferguson has stepped down from being a rep and has been replaced by Bob Kelly (Reform CC).

Marketing & Communications Stuart McLean (Marketing Officer)

Marketing The position of Marketing Assistant was re-advertised in the summer of 2013 and by August a new member of staff was appointed. This brought some graphic design expertise to the team which allowed us to produce more work in house and with a faster turnaround. We increased our capabilities in design, web development and photo and video editing with a software license for Adobe’s Creative Suite and this has been beneficial to all departments of the organisation. The Marketing team worked with Club and Member Development, Coaching, Competitions, Performance and Office Administration teams on a range of projects but most of the focus this year was on curling development legacy around the . Rebranding work was completed on the RCCC’s development programmes with new logos rolled out for Skill Awards, Try Curling and Curling’s Cool (launching in 2014-15). This provided the ground work for further improvements including a revamp of the Skill Awards resources (t-shirts, badges, certificates and coach resource packs) to complement the updated programme content.

A Try Curling ‘tool kit’ was devised for RCCC staff, development officers and ice rinks to help raise awareness of the sport and convert interest into participation. This included a dedicated Try Curling website (see Communications for more), a new ‘Beginner’s Guide to Curling’ booklet and a range of poster templates, banner stands, adverts, photography and pre-written copy and press releases. These promotional tools proved to be a key factor of the campaign’s success around the Olympic and Paralympic Games engaging the public and offering an experience that the public could buy into and they enhanced the level of quality and consistency to its key messages (see Club and Member Development for more).

Member data continues to be gathered and analysed and more surveys like the recent Your Curler reader questionnaire will be deployed to help better inform our products, services and membership offerings. Work also continues to record year on year statistics and data from across the organisation to help us in our future planning and to identify growing trends or areas for improvement.

RCCC Annual Report 2013-2014v20-05 18 Communications Website operations were expanded greatly with the development of two new websites, trycurling.com and scottishcurlingtrust.org. Access was also given to britishcurling.com to further improve the profile of curling, particularly during the Winter Olympics.

Trycurling.com was commissioned by the RCCC and built by our new website and maintenance providers Flintriver, with funding provided by the WCF Development Assistance Programme. The main aim of the site was to make it easy for people to get involved in curling with hundreds of taster sessions and beginner classes listed and searchable online. Users could also learn about the basics of the game, locate ice rinks and curling clubs near them and find curling competitions to watch Scotland’s top curlers in action. The site was soft launched in October 2013 but was heavily promoted at the start of 2014 to coincide with the Winter . The website recorded significant levels of traffic during the Games thanks mainly to mentions on the BBC’s terrestrial and red button Olympic curling commentary and the huge amount of dedicated Try Curling coverage generated. The website was deemed to be a major contributor to the success of the Try Curling initiative and the number of participants achieved.

Scottishcurlingtrust.org was designed and built in-house and it is hoped that this online presence will enhance and support the Trust’s fundraising efforts going forward.

Royalcaledoniancurlingclub.org proved to be stable and reliable following its move to a dedicated server with no outages or connectivity issues reported. This was particularly pleasing as visits to the website were up by over 104% in February, its busiest month. Since the website’s launch in late 2011 we now have two year’s website data to assess overall performance and visits to the site are up by 18.5% (2012 to 2013).

Major development work was undertaken to build a new line-scoring system providing an improved competition reporting and results experience for both administrators and users. Coverage of over one hundred curling competitions was achieved through previews, daily updates, game reports, photography and linkages throughout a variety of RCCC communications. Additional regional and national press, television and radio coverage was generated using Newslink, the largest independent news aggregation and delivery service in the UK and trusted source of media publishers.

Comprehensive daily coverage of the RCCC’s major Scottish curling events and Olympics ensured that the RCCC website was established as the place to go for curling reportage. Journalist Mike Haggerty was once again deployed to deliver daily reports on the RCCC website from the World Championships, Junior Championships and European Championships ensuring Scotland’s representatives received coverage in mainstream press. The RCCC once again made use of the WCF online image library to support its international reporting with high quality images and engaged with a number of photographers in Scotland to ensure the same for its national events and initiatives.

BBC Sport Scotland provided live online coverage of The Co-operative Funeralcare Scottish Curling Championships Finals from the Dewars Centre in Perth followed by two one hour highlights programmes on BBC Two Scotland the following week. The profile of curling was raised significantly over the year with many television programmes and broadcasters incorporating curling features or team appearances.

A 50% rise in social media likes and followers was fuelled mainly by the increase in curling interest during the Olympics and Paralympics but also by the quality and content invested in these outlets. A conscious effort was made to generate wider reach and exposure through likes, shares, hashtags and retweets to ensure that social media remains an important part of our communications and means of pushing information to users and driving visitors to our websites.

RCCC Annual Report 2013-2014v20-05 19 A Your Curler reader survey provided some useful feedback on the ezine and this was used to make improvements to content and layout. Subscription continues to grow, up 7% on last year, and after 24 issues and three years, Your Curler has secured its place as a valued and worthwhile member communication.

Fundraising In addition to a new brand and website created for the Scottish Curling Trust, a new leaflet ‘Make Curling Your Lasting Legacy’ was produced and posted to all members in the annual membership mailing. This leaflet was designed to showcase the work of the Scottish Curling Trust and inform members on how they can support curling in the future by leaving a donation in their Will. This is a long term fundraising initiative and it is hoped will benefit the sport in years to come.

A.M. Ross Family Foundation generously extended their grant sponsorship of the Curling’s Cool initiative for another year and a successful application to NHS Lothian Trust will ensure that a new ‘Lothian Disability Project’, which will offer wheelchair curling opportunities at Murrayfield, can be implemented in season 2014-15.

Advertising revenues continued to support the member ezine Your Curler and some new advertisers took advantage of our online and event offerings.

The Scottish Championships benefited from its third successful year of sponsorship from The Co- operative Funeralcare. Tullis Russell continued its sponsorship of Scotland’s European and World Teams and supported Curling’s Cool as ‘Official Paper Supplier’ providing all certificates. We were pleased to extend Asham’s title sponsorship of the Under 14 Slam to include the Under 17 and Under 21 Slam events for three years and we welcomed a number of new sponsors to our Scottish Championships and other events.

Much work has been put into generating new sponsorship leads and building attractive proposals and we are pleased to announce that a new title sponsor for the Scottish Senior Championships has been confirmed for season 2014-15. William Grant and Sons will sponsor the Scottish Senior Championships with one of their regional brands OVD Rum.

Performance Nancy Smith (High Performance Coach)

In the Olympic and Paralympic year, the World Class Curling Performance Programme supported 17 men, 16 women and 8 wheelchair athletes. Selection for inclusion into the programme was based on the prospect of athletes having potential for winning Olympic or Paralympic medals in 2014 and/or 2018.

The training and preparation programmes were focused on increased technical training at on-ice sessions throughout the year with appropriate peaking and tapering of training volumes. During the year, the programme was designed to prepare athletes and teams to achieve success on the international stage were both individual and team on the following elements:-  Mind-set and commitment  Technical delivery and sweeping  Tactics  Team dynamics
