Riede, Advisor Jill Galvan Clare A. Simmons Copyright by Maria Eugenia Gonzalez-Posse 2012 Abstract The doll, as we conceive of it today, is the product of a Victorian cultural phenomenon. It was not until the middle of the nineteenth century that a dedicated doll industry was developed and that dolls began to find their way into children‘s literature, the rhetoric of femininity, periodical publications and canonical texts. Surprisingly, the Victorian fascination with the doll has largely gone unexamined and critics and readers have tended to dismiss dolls as mere agents of female acculturation. Guided by the recent material turn in Victorian studies and drawing extensively from texts only recently made available through digitization projects and periodical databases, my dissertation seeks to provide a richer account of the way this most fraught and symbolic of objects figured in the lives and imaginations of the Victorians. By studying the treatment of dolls in canonical literature alongside hitherto neglected texts and genres and framing these readings in their larger cultural contexts, the doll emerges not as a symbol of female passivity but as an object celebrated for its remarkable imaginative potential. The doll, I argue, is therefore best understood as a descendant of Galatea – as a woman turned object, but also as an object that Victorians constantly and variously brought to life through the imagination. -

Neill Baylor, of Vidalia, Georgia; Herman Cranman, of Savannah, Georgia; and Robert Waldrop, of Beaufort, South Carolina. The impetus for this exploration began with the stories I received as a child when my father would share his wartime military experiences with me and continues with the learning of pre-war, wartime, and post-war experiences. -

The Fashion Doll: From Bébé Jumeau to Barbie. Oxford and New York: Berg, 2004. ISBN 1 85973 743 9. Robyn Walton “Dolls raise so many issues about the representation and cultural posi- tioning of the feminine in society,” writes Juliette Peers in the “Introduction” to her book The Fashion Doll (Peers: 8). Liz Conor might well have begun her text about feminine visibility by using the same statement, substituting for “dolls” the words “mass media images of women.” “Appearance” and “appearing,” in their multiple meanings, are also key words for both au- thors. Peers’s primary interest is fashionably dressed dolls’ appearance (looks) and appearance (emergence) in the market-place, while Conor elaborates on the emergence of the “new formation of subjectivity” she calls the Modern Appearing Woman in the technologically enhanced ocular field of the 1920s. Discussing these two books in terms of their covers is a temptation not to be resisted since each text is so much about representation. Appropri- ately, a photographic image of a woman or an inorganic 3D representation of a woman occupies each cover. The front of Peers’s book shows a styl- ishly dressed young woman ostensibly adjusting her underwear in the company of an up-to-date doll; the front of Conor’s is occupied by the glamorously painted face of a store display dummy or mannequin. The Poetics of the Description in The Doll in the Light of Notes on the Composition of Bolesław Prus Marcin Jauksz ORCID: 0000-0002-8337-3640 Discussing the descriptions of space and the objects filling it in the literature of the late nine- teenth century is, it seems, a closed chapter for the study of literature. However, the poetics of description, which with the transformation of the realistic paradigm in literature1 is also changing, finding itself at the heart of the problem of crystallizing literary modernism, in- vites one to keep looking at the problem of nineteenth-century mimesis with the feeling that not everything is already obvious. Acta Poloniae Historica 100, 2009 PL ISSN 0001-6892 Magdalena Micińska THE POLISH INTELLIGENTSIA IN THE YEARS 1864-1918 The middle 1860s were an important turning-point in the history of the Polish nation, especially that of its educated elites. The tragic defeat of the January Uprising (1863-4) was followed by a period of heavy political repressions, profound social changes, economic challenges and intellectual revaluations. This period faced the Polish intellectual elites with the greatest challenges in their history and at the same time it began the decades when this stratum enjoyed a hitherto unknown social prestige. This was a time when the intelligentsia set itself tasks to which it could not aspire ever after. The people in the area within Russian partition underwent brutal repressions that affected not only the intellectual elite, but society as a whole. The human losses suffered in insurgent battles and summary executions were augmented by ensuing deportations to Siberia, the Caucasus and into the Russian Empire, which embraced about 40,000 insurgents and members of their families, eliminating them for many years, sometimes for ever, from the country’s life. Arrests and deportations were accompanied by confiscations of property. It is very hard to es tablish the percentage of the intelligentsia among the deportees (the Russian sources did not distinguish this social category), but certainly they included the most active individuals, those most conscious of and dedicated to the idea of a prompt reconstruction of independent Poland. Soon after the downfall of the January Uprising the Russians started a process of the liquidation of the separate character of Congress Poland. -

Robinson Sharpe ASHLAND UNIVERSITY, 2014 Dr. Judy Alston, Ph.D. This study explores the racial attitudes and preferences among 164 children between three and seven years of age. The study is a partial replication of the Clark and Clark (1958) Doll Test which concluded that segregation, along with prejudice and discrimination, caused feelings of inferiority and self-hatred in African-American children. Significant changes to the original doll test are introduced in the current study. This study is based on an embedded mixed method design which utilizes Chi-square, cross-tabulations, and free-choice interviewing. -

World Literature Studies 2 . vol. 11 . 2019 (123 – 131) ŠTÚDIEmateriály / ART / ImclatEseriAls Foreign travels in “The Doll” by Bolesław Prus as a comment on the condition of 19th-century Poland Agata Buda The novel Lalka (1890, The Doll 1996) by Bolesław Prus is undoubtedly one of the most important works in the history of Polish literature. It links both the presentation of the Polish nation in the 19th century with its political, social and cultural aspects, but also shows the cause and effect relationships between the history of Europe and the creation of national identity and the fight for independence. Moreover, The Doll moves around the images of other countries, both European and distant ones, which constitute a crucial background for understanding the situation of Polish citizens in 19th-century Poland under the partitions (1795–1918). Prus does not directly por- tray the oppression of Poland by one of the invaders, the Russians, which was typical for 19th-century writers, because he did not want the preventive censorship of the time to cut out all the negative comments on Russian politics towards the Polish nation (Sobieraj 2011, 137). The action of the novel takes place in the years 1878–1879. There are also ret- rospective scenes dating back to the year 1837 as well as comments on such events as the Revolution of 1848 or the January Uprising. The main character, Stanisław Wokulski, is the owner of a shop with different types of goods who is dedicated to his work. He is widowed and falls in love with a beautiful representative of the noble class, Izabela Łęcka. -

In this article, we go through the long history of talking heads and statues to publicly displayed robots and fortune-tellers, as well as consumer-oriented products such as the late 19th century talking dolls of Thomas Edison. We also analyse the attempts at making speaking machines commercially successful on various occasions. In the end, we investigate how speech producing devices such as the actual digital assistants that operate our current technological systems fit into this historical context. Our focus is on the gender aspects of the artificial, posthuman voice. On the basis of our study, we conclude that the female voice and other feminine characteristics as well as the figures of exoticized and racialized ‘Others’ have been applied to draw atten- tion away from the uncanniness and other negative effects of these artificial humans and the machinic speech they produce. -
