An indelible mark was left on Prus by his experiences as a 15-year-old soldier in the 1863 Uprising, in which he suffered severe battle contusions, followed by imprisonment at Lublin by Tsarist Russian authorities. At age 25, in Warsaw, he settled into a distinguished 40-year journalistic career that helped prepare his compatriots to be competitive in a modern world increasingly dominated by science and technology. As a sideline, in an effort to appeal to Poles through their aesthetic sensibilities, he began writing short stories. Achieving success with the short stories, Prus decided to employ a broader canvas. Between 1886 and 1895, he completed four major novels on great societal questions. Perennial favorites with his countrymen are The Doll (Lalka) and Pharaoh (Faraon). The Doll describes the romantic infatuation of a man of action who is frustrated by the backwardness of his society. Pharaoh, Prus’ only historical novel, is a study of political power; and while reflecting the Polish national experience of the previous century, it also offers a unique vision of ancient Egypt at the fall of its 20th Dynasty and New Kingdom. " CCORDING to the first book of Kings, Solomon's half-brother, ft Adonijah, after the defeat of an alleged (perhaps mythical) effort to recover the throne of which he had been defrauded, sub­ mitted himself to Solomon. He had become enamored of the vir­ gin who had been brought to the aged King David to try to revive some vitality in him; and he came to Bathsheba asking her to re­ quest her son the king to give him this damsel as his wife. Bath­ sheba proffered this "small petition" for Adonijah, but Solomon was enraged, and ironically suggested that she should ask the king­ dom itself for Adonijah, whom he straightway ordered to execu­ tion. The immediate context indicates that Solomon suspected in this petition a plot against his throne. A royal father's harem was inherited by a royal son, and its possession is supposed to have in­ volved certain rights of succession: this is the only interpretation I have ever heard of the extreme violence of Solomon. But I have never been satisfied with this explanation. Would Adonijah have requested, or Bathsheba asked as a "small" thing, a favor touch­ ing the king's tenure? The story as told in the Book of Kings appears diplomatic, and several details suggest that in some earlier legend the strife between the half- brothers had a more romantic relation to "Abishag the Shunammite," who is described as "very fair." Abishag is interpreted as meaning "father of error," and though that translation is of doubtful accuracy, its persistence in­ dicates the place occupied by her in early tradition.

They called their writing ‘divine word’ because they believed that Thoth, god of wisdom, had taught them how to write. Our word hieroglyphs derives from a phrase meaning ‘sacred carvings’ used by the ancient Greek visitors to Egypt to describe the symbols that they saw on tomb and temple walls. The number of hieroglyphic signs gradually grew to over 7000 in total, though not all of them were used on a regular basis. The hieroglyphs were chosen from a wide variety of observed images, for example, people, birds, trees, or buildings. Some represent the sounds of the ancient Egyptian language, but consonants only. No vowels were written out. Also, it was not an alphabetic system, since one sign could represent a combination of two or more consonants like the gaming-board hieroglyph which stands for the consonants mn. Egyptologists make the sounds pronounceable by putting an e between the consonants, so mn is read as men.

The population of this megalopolis has swollen to an estimated 17 million, more than half of whom live in the sprawling self- Obuilt neighbourhoods and shantytowns that ring the ancient heart of the city and its colonial-era quarters. Since the late 1970s, the regime’s lib- eralization policy—infitah, or ‘open door’—combined with the collapse of the developmentalist model, a deepening agrarian crisis and accel- erated rural–urban migration, have produced vast new zones of what the French call ‘mushroom city’. The Arabic term for them al-madun al-‘ashwa’iyyah might be rendered ‘haphazard city’; the root means ‘chance’. These zones developed after the state had abandoned its role as provider of affordable social housing, leaving the field to the private sector, which concentrated on building middle and upper-middle-class accommodation, yielding higher returns. The poor took the matter into their own hands and, as the saying goes, they did it poorly. Sixty per cent of Egypt’s urban expansion over the last thirty years has consisted of ‘haphazard dwellings’. These districts can lack the most basic services, including running water and sewage. Their streets are not wide enough for ambulances or fire engines to enter; in places they are even narrower than the alleyways of the ancient medina. The random juxtaposition of buildings has produced a proliferation of cul-de-sacs, while the lack of planning and shortage of land have ensured a complete absence of green spaces or squares.

It was not until the middle of the nineteenth century that a dedicated doll industry was developed and that dolls began to find their way into children‘s literature, the rhetoric of femininity, periodical publications and canonical texts. Surprisingly, the Victorian fascination with the doll has largely gone unexamined and critics and readers have tended to dismiss dolls as mere agents of female acculturation. Guided by the recent material turn in Victorian studies and drawing extensively from texts only recently made available through digitization projects and periodical databases, my dissertation seeks to provide a richer account of the way this most fraught and symbolic of objects figured in the lives and imaginations of the Victorians. By studying the treatment of dolls in canonical literature alongside hitherto neglected texts and genres and framing these readings in their larger cultural contexts, the doll emerges not as a symbol of female passivity but as an object celebrated for its remarkable imaginative potential. The doll, I argue, is therefore best understood as a descendant of Galatea – as a woman turned object, but also as an object that Victorians constantly and variously brought to life through the imagination.

    Ethel Newcome , By Susan Foreman • Photos by Andy Ourant unless otherwise noted Presenting Miss Ethel Newcome A Civil War-era Wax Doll Donated to the UFDC Museum by Judy Blewis, Becky Decker, Susan Foreman and Sandy Kralovetz thel Newcome, to quote William Makepeace Thackeray, “is the handsomest woman in England.” Soon another “Ethel Newcome” would prove to be “the handsomest doll in Philadelphia.” The subject of this article, a circa 1860s 26-inch EEnglish poured wax doll, was named after the heroine in Thackeray’s 1855 novel, The Newcomes. Thackeray was exceedingly popular at the time, in fact his only possible rival was Dickens. “Ethel,” the doll, was purchased in Paris in about 1863 by Mary Cadwalader, Secretary of the Children’s Division of the Philadelphia Sanitary Fair. When I entered the shop, there stood “Ethel.” She is so much more beautiful than I expected and so much taller. Her wardrobe and accessories are beyond words (the pictures say more than words could ever say). Her couturier-designed fashions are lavish.
