Mark Oriano Refreshments Jean Piotrowski Charlie Felsen Audio/Video Rich Reidell The Round Robin is a chance for members to showcase their skills, as Photographer JimMoloney well as any questions they have. The big attraction was Joe Bottigliere, Workshop Coordinator/Food Critic Charlie James and his plane tuning clinic. It does demonstrate that, no matter how many times we show how to use a hand plane, it never seems to be THIS MONTH: enough. The SSOW showed some carvings they worked on, the people who make Toys for Tots brought in some samples, and Jim Brown & Norman Bald showed off their considerable skills. NOTES FROM THE EDITOR TURNER’S GUILD LISA As a side note, on the Marktplace page, you will see a list of some of SSOW Harry Aristodou’s tools. He is selling his tools, and I can tell you from seeing them, they are all in excellent shape. See you all August 3rd, at the monthly meeting. The Woodrack Volume 26 Number 6 Next meeting Wednesday August 3rd 7 PM LONG ISLAND WOODWORKERS 2 THE WOODRACK LONG ISLAND WOODWORKERS 3 THE WOODRACK LONG ISLAND WOODWORKERS 4 THE WOODRACK LONG ISLAND WOODWORKERS 5 THE WOODRACK LONG ISLAND WOODWORKERS 6 THE WOODRACK LONG ISLAND WOODWORKERS 7 THE WOODRACK SSOW STEVE BLAKELY he meeting was held a week early because of work that was to be done on the hall next week. Due to the absence of the President and the Vice President, Iris Zimmerman presided over the meeting. There was no Told or new business, nobody had anything to say. Iris brought up that carvers are needed for the Heritage Fair. For Show and Tell most members stated that they were still working on their automaton. It was a short meet- ing but everyone was happy! TURNER’S GUILD STEVE BLAKELY ith the unavailability of President Mike Josiah, Bob Urso presided over the meeting. Bob announced that there would be a “Round Robin” tonight. In addition to the club lathe, two members brought their lath- Wes in. There was no new business, there was no old business. Nobody wanted to see anything special. As for the catego- ry, “Does anyone have anything else”, Charlie Felsen spoke about the Atlanta Turning Symposium, saying there was burning; piercing; cardboard turning and air brushing in addition to “regular” turning. He also asked one of the artists who was showing off their burnings (pyrography) where they got the patterns. He was told from wallpaper designs from the internet. Good bit of information there! Bob Urso spoke of a turned baseball bat that had a ball in the middle of it. Show and tell was a success. Two members brought in bowls that had done or were working on. Four members showed off pens (yes plural) and one member showed off a pencil. Imagine that, more pens/pencils that bowls. That has not happened in a long time. LONG ISLAND WOODWORKERS 8 THE WOODRACK LONG ISLAND WOODWORKERS 9 THE WOODRACK LONG ISLAND WOODWORKERS 10 THE WOODRACK LISA CHUCK BURG rnold opened up the last meeting before the summer by announcing that our presentator, Rich Macrae, had an accident in his workshop last Sunday and will not give a presentation that night as he is recovering. Rich Asuffered an injury that required 13 stitches. Ed who knows Rich will ask him how long his presentation is and maybe we can combine a lath art presentation with his for the September meeting. The SIG will not meet during the summer of July and August. The next meeting will be Thursday, September 22nd. The Chapter Challenge will be Christmas ornaments. The same ornaments can be used for our new collaborative. We plan to show our new collaborative at the show in November. The ornaments cannot be more than 4” in diam- eter or 4” square as we discussed and each member should make at least two. Rolf brought in a giraffe which came from Africa with a broken nose. He asked if anyone recognized the wood. He has to replace the nose. No one recognized the wood. It was suggested he put it on a bigger base so it won’t topple over. SHOW and TELL Alain - brought in a scrolled bowl and a sled. Rolf - made a miniature Chinese chariot with a wheel on its side. The wheel is connected to a dowel and rather than a dragon cutout a Santa Claus cutout with an outstretched hand and pointing finger was put on top of the dowel. He then moved the chariot while turning the wheel. As the wheel turned, Santa Claus on LONG ISLAND WOODWORKERS 11 THE WOODRACK top with its pointing finger should always point in the same direction as the chariot is moving. It didn’t. So back to the drawing board. Carl - a puzzle box and box. Chuck - some of his wood burnings (Pyrography). Arnold - three trucks and he gave some hints on how to cut the wheels. Arnold asked us to report on Fox Chapel. We agreed that it was worthwhile. Arnold gave a talk on an airbrush which he bought at Harbor Freight. The airbrush was worth buying. He also discussed schwibbogan which means in German “arch” (a scrolled arch ) He was hoping that someone would try it. They are expense even in Germany which Arnold visited. See you in September!!!
