NEWS www.thoroughbreddailynews.com WEDNESDAY, MARCH 12, 2008 BARRETTS HAS A TOUGH ACT TO FOLLOW DENIS OF CORK TO SKIP REBEL The Barrretts March Sale of Selected Two-Year-Olds Trainer David Carroll revealed yesterday that Denis of in Training will be held at the Hinds Pavilion in Pomona, Cork (Harlan=s Holiday) will skip Saturday=s GII Rebel S. California, this afternoon. Bidding begins at 2:00 p.m. at Oaklawn Park and will point instead toward the GI local time, but it will be hard to match the numbers put Wood Memorial or the GII Illinois Derby. Both races will up by Barretts March in 2007. While the buyback rate be run Apr. 5. AAll of us now are suffering from higher numbers of withdrawals than we=re comfortable with,@ he re- marked. ABut what I like to point out is that, in some respects, it=s self-screening. It just makes the job easier for the buyers. The horses that come out, generally, are going through difficulties of one kind or another, and the consignors just decide to wait for the next sale. In terms of gross numbers, we=d sure like to have higher numbers, but that seems to be just another trend in the industry--and hopefully we=ll get them back to sell in our May sale.@ The Barretts May sale is set for May 13. Gold Cup Preview GOLD CUP PREVIEW Plenty of comparisons have already been made between Arkle and Best Mate, and they’re bound to become even more popular should the best staying chaser of the present day complete a hat-trick of Cheltenham Gold Cup victories in mid-March. Just for the record, the following paragraph from Chasers & Hurdlers 2002/3 may help to put into perspective just how good Arkle really was:- ‘In the 1965/6 season, Arkle ran four times before his third Cheltenham Gold Cup victory, starting off with a twenty-length win under 12-7 in the Gallaher Gold Cup at Sandown in November, setting a time record which still stands for the course and distance. Later that month, Arkle took his second successive Hennessy under 12-7, winning by fifteen lengths from Freddie who received 32 lb. Arkle made it three wins from three starts with victory by a distance in the King George VI Chase before again winning the Leopardstown Chase on his way to Cheltenham. Arkle conceded 42 lb to the second and third at Leopardstown; runner-up Height o’ Fashion, who went down by a neck, did most of her racing in Ireland but was worth a Timeform rating of 168+ whilst third-placed Splash, beaten a further fifteen lengths, had won the previous year’s Irish Grand National and earnt a Timeform rating of 157. Arkle gave them a 43 lb and 55 lb beating respectively and was 10/1-on when making it five out of five for the season when taking Best Mate jumps the second last in splendid isolation twelve month ago 1 Cheltenham Festival Issue the Gold Cup in a canter.

WEDNESDAY, MARCH 14, 2018 SCAT DADDY FILLY LEADS ROOKIE TRAINER BRISSET EYES DERBY VICTORY by Bill Finley WAY AT OBS MARCH He is not one of the usual suspects. While Bob Baffert, Todd Pletcher, Dale Romans, Chad Brown, et. al. are in the midst of their annual pilgrimage to Churchill Downs for the GI Kentucky Derby, they may have to contend with a rival trainer who many people probably hadn't even heard of prior to last Saturday's GII Tampa Bay Derby. Rodolphe Brisset didn't start his first horse until May 14 of last year, and coming into the Tampa race had won just nine races, none of them stakes. But if a trainer knows what he is doing and has a good horse, why should any of that matter? That's exactly what Brisset, 34, might ultimately prove. In Quip (Distorted Humor) he has a horse that may be good enough to give the trainer a Kentucky Derby winner less than one year after he started his first horse. • Nigel Twiston-Davies, and It Is No Secret He Starts Quickly
Editor's Welcome The problem with the magazine publishing business is that you are always looking ahead and thinking about the following months. So right now I see sunshine out of my window but I'm thinking about National Hunt racing and the coming autumn and winter. On the bright side there is a lot of money to be won with early season jumps trainers and that is why we have a lot of research into this phenomenon this month. And this month that includes research from somebody who knows that September and October are highly profitable and that is Ben Aitken of Narrowing The Field. Ben is with us for the next three months which for him is the highlight of the year and where he makes most of his profit. Do check out his website for profitable tips http://narrowing-the- field.co.uk Nick also has updated his research into early season jumps trainers to uncover some profitable angles as has Wendy. The fact is that when three experts independently focus on the same type of strategy you know there must be profit to be found there. Elsewhere we have an interview with the only tipster with a Masters Degree in International Politics, which is obviously crucial to a successful punting career! I'm talking about John Burke who is the brains behind the Victor Value service. And if you are into the Irish racing scene, and you should be, we have a more detailed look at the Declan O'Donoghue tipping service. I hope you enjoy this month’s issue.
