Champion Hurdle 2 Miles 110Yds, Grade 1, 5Yo + Race History CHAMPION HURDLE 2 MILES 110YDS, GRADE 1, 5YO + RACE HISTORY The highlight on the first day of the Cheltenham Festival and the race that decides the bragging rights for the hurdling division. There have been many famous battles fought out in the race over the last few decades especially so during the 70's when the likes of Monskfield, Night Nurse and Comedy of Errors regularly slugged it out with each other. Some of the great names in hurdling have won mutliple Champion Hurdle titles (Hattons Grace, Sir Ken, Persian War, See You Then, Istabraaq, ) which all goes to make the Champion Hurdle a race to savour. RECENT TRENDS Killer stat: All of the last 21 winners had run since Christmas (19/21 within the last 51 days) Age • 2008 winner Katchit is the only 5-y-o winner since See You Then in 1985 • Since 1951 there have only been 4 winners aged 9 or over • 17 of the last 20 winners were aged 6-8 Betting • 16 of the last 19 winners returned 11/1 or under • 9 of the last 19 favourites have won Class • 17 of the last 19 winners had won a Grade 1 hurdle or a Grade 3 Handicap Hurdle • 14 of the last 19 winners had won a Grade 1 or 2 hurdle that season Distance • All of the last 19 winners had won at 2m-2m1f Previous runs • 13 of the last 14 winners finished in the top 3 on their previous start (2014 was 4th) • All of the last 14 winners had finished in the top 4 on both their previous starts (when completing) • 11 of the last 12 winners had run 12 or fewer times over hurdles • 18 of the last 20 winners had been placed at the previous Cheltenham Festival Interesting Fact : Only 2 winners (Binocular & Jezki) had finished outside the top 3 in any completed start for that season. The vast maJority of winners had run in the last 50 days (Sharjah & Brain Power haven't) and those having last raced on the all weather/flat have a dreadful record at the Festival (Verdana Blue). Which is a rather long winded way of saying the race looks to revolve around the top 3 in the betting. Last years winner Buveur D'Air and the two mares who receive 7lb's, Apples Jade and Laurina. Very little splits them but his win in the Fighting Fifth was so impressive that I have to make Nicky Henderson's reigning Champion the...     Bulletin Book Extracts Continuity with the Dark Horses Annual … In my Dark Horses Guide I made out a case for Nichols Canyon, now the winner of seven of his 10 starts over hurdles. A genuine and classy performer for John Gosden on the Flat, with two Listed victories and a Group 3 placing to his name, he landed four Grade 1 races as a novice last season without getting the credit he deserved. This season he became the first horse to beat Faugheen, where the close proximity of Wicklow Brave in third suggests the favourite underperformed, before winning his sixth Grade 1 race when beating Identity Thief in the Ryanair Hurdle at Leopardstown over Christmas. Nichols Canyon ran the worst race of his career just under a month later when he trailed home 28 lengths third to Faugheen and Arctic Fire in the Irish Champion Hurdle, possibly feeling the effects of his tussle with Identity Thief in the heavy ground. Nichols Canyon’s greatest asset is his tenacity. He is not the sort of horse ever to win on the bridle, but he handles any ground and has strong winning form over two and a half miles – always an asset in the Champion Hurdle. Willie Mullins says the horse reminds him of Hurricane Fly – a great compliment - and there is a case for saying he has the best overall form in the race, even though the ratings suggest otherwise. Strong Opinions … I have no doubt that My Tent Or Yours is one of the most talented horses Nicky Henderson has ever trained.

    Gold Cup Preview GOLD CUP PREVIEW Plenty of comparisons have already been made between Arkle and Best Mate, and they’re bound to become even more popular should the best staying chaser of the present day complete a hat-trick of Cheltenham Gold Cup victories in mid-March. Just for the record, the following paragraph from Chasers & Hurdlers 2002/3 may help to put into perspective just how good Arkle really was:- ‘In the 1965/6 season, Arkle ran four times before his third Cheltenham Gold Cup victory, starting off with a twenty-length win under 12-7 in the Gallaher Gold Cup at Sandown in November, setting a time record which still stands for the course and distance. Later that month, Arkle took his second successive Hennessy under 12-7, winning by fifteen lengths from Freddie who received 32 lb. Arkle made it three wins from three starts with victory by a distance in the King George VI Chase before again winning the Leopardstown Chase on his way to Cheltenham.
