The trainers of both fillies were looking on the bright side, however, as rain continued to fall at Rosehill during the draw. "I was a bit deflated to start with but you look at the weather outside right now, it might be the best barrier,@ Toby Edmonds, who trains the unbeaten Magic Millions 2YO Classic winner Houtzen, told Racing.com. "If you draw close and you get that pressure from the outside we could end up in an awkward spot in behind horses and copping a lot of the backwash, so the draw might not be that bad." While Elliott was responsible for a trio of those wins, Tuesday very much belonged to Henderson, who increased his tally as the most successful trainer at the Festival to 57--11 ahead of Mullins. Thirty-two years after the famously fragile See You Then (GB) (Royal Palace {GB}) won the first of three consecutive Champion Hurdles for the Lambourn trainer, Henderson returned to the Prestbury Park winner's enclosure with a record sixth victory in the race courtesy of Buveur d'Air (Fr) (Crillon {Fr}), who led home his stablemate My Tent Or Yours (Ire) (Desert Prince {Fr}), the latter settling for the bridesmaid role for the third consecutive year. "You feel sorry for My Tent Or Yours," said the trainer. "It's wonderful--we have won the Champion Hurdle--but that is now three Champion Hurdles he has been second in as well as a Supreme Novices' Hurdle. Bulletin Book Extracts Continuity with the Dark Horses Annual … In my Dark Horses Guide I made out a case for Nichols Canyon, now the winner of seven of his 10 starts over hurdles. A genuine and classy performer for John Gosden on the Flat, with two Listed victories and a Group 3 placing to his name, he landed four Grade 1 races as a novice last season without getting the credit he deserved. This season he became the first horse to beat Faugheen, where the close proximity of Wicklow Brave in third suggests the favourite underperformed, before winning his sixth Grade 1 race when beating Identity Thief in the Ryanair Hurdle at Leopardstown over Christmas. Nichols Canyon ran the worst race of his career just under a month later when he trailed home 28 lengths third to Faugheen and Arctic Fire in the Irish Champion Hurdle, possibly feeling the effects of his tussle with Identity Thief in the heavy ground. Nichols Canyon’s greatest asset is his tenacity. He is not the sort of horse ever to win on the bridle, but he handles any ground and has strong winning form over two and a half miles – always an asset in the Champion Hurdle. Willie Mullins says the horse reminds him of Hurricane Fly – a great compliment - and there is a case for saying he has the best overall form in the race, even though the ratings suggest otherwise. Strong Opinions … I have no doubt that My Tent Or Yours is one of the most talented horses Nicky Henderson has ever trained.

Just for the record, the following paragraph from Chasers & Hurdlers 2002/3 may help to put into perspective just how good Arkle really was:- ‘In the 1965/6 season, Arkle ran four times before his third Cheltenham Gold Cup victory, starting off with a twenty-length win under 12-7 in the Gallaher Gold Cup at Sandown in November, setting a time record which still stands for the course and distance. Later that month, Arkle took his second successive Hennessy under 12-7, winning by fifteen lengths from Freddie who received 32 lb. Arkle made it three wins from three starts with victory by a distance in the King George VI Chase before again winning the Leopardstown Chase on his way to Cheltenham. Arkle conceded 42 lb to the second and third at Leopardstown; runner-up Height o’ Fashion, who went down by a neck, did most of her racing in Ireland but was worth a Timeform rating of 168+ whilst third-placed Splash, beaten a further fifteen lengths, had won the previous year’s Irish Grand National and earnt a Timeform rating of 157.
