Hey, How's That Project Going? HEY, HOW’s THAT PROJECT GOING? Quentin Tarantino is wandering the globe, beseeching studios and stars (Brad Pitt, Leonardo DiCaprio) to join his much-delayed WWII epic Inglorious Bastards. Tarantino first started working on the movie in 1997, but it’s hardly the longest-simmering artwork out there. What other much-awaited projects are nearing completion in the 9/26/2006 worlds of rock, opera, theater, and visual art? PERFORMED IDENTITIES: HEAVY METAL MUSICIANS BETWEEN 1984 AND 1991 Bradley C. Klypchak A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY May 2007 Committee: Dr. Jeffrey A. Brown, Advisor Dr. John Makay Graduate Faculty Representative Dr. Ron E. Shields Dr. Don McQuarie © 2007 Bradley C. Klypchak All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Dr. Jeffrey A. Brown, Advisor Between 1984 and 1991, heavy metal became one of the most publicly popular and commercially successful rock music subgenres. The focus of this dissertation is to explore the following research questions: How did the subculture of heavy metal music between 1984 and 1991 evolve and what meanings can be derived from this ongoing process? How did the contextual circumstances surrounding heavy metal music during this period impact the performative choices exhibited by artists, and from a position of retrospection, what lasting significance does this particular era of heavy metal merit today? A textual analysis of metal- related materials fostered the development of themes relating to the selective choices made and performances enacted by metal artists. These themes were then considered in terms of gender, sexuality, race, and age constructions as well as the ongoing negotiations of the metal artist within multiple performative realms. Occurring at the juncture of art and commerce, heavy metal music is a purposeful construction. Metal musicians made performative choices for serving particular aims, be it fame, wealth, or art. These same individuals worked within a greater system of influence. Metal bands were the contracted employees of record labels whose own corporate aims needed to be recognized.

  • Rock and Popular Music 1960
Rock and Popular Music 1960 - 2000 Cultural and Historic Background Information Rock music is a broad genre of popular music that originated as "rock and roll" in the United States in the early 1950s and developed into a range of different styles in the 1960s and later, particularly in the United States and the United Kingdom. It originates from 1940s and 1950s rock and roll, a style which drew heavily from the genres of blues, rhythm and blues, and from country music. Rock music also drew strongly from several other genres such as electric blues and folk, and incorporated influences from jazz, classical and other musical styles. Musically, rock has centered on the electric guitar, usually as part of a rock group with electric bass, drums, and one or more singers. Usually, rock is song-based music with a 4/4 time signature using a verse–chorus form, but the genre has become extremely diverse. Like pop music, lyrics often stress romantic love but also address a wide variety of other themes that are frequently social or political. At the beginning of the 1960s, pop and rock and roll trends of the 1950s continued; nevertheless, the rock and roll of the decade before started to merge into a more international, eclectic variant. In the early 1960s, rock and roll in its purest form was gradually overtaken by pop rock, psychedelic rock, blues rock, and folk rock, which had grown in popularity. The country and folk influenced style associated with the latter half of 1960s rock music spawned a generation of popular singer songwriters who wrote and performed their own work.

  • Let There Be Rock: the AC/DC Phenomenon
Proceedings of the 24th Association of Public Authority Surveyors Conference (APAS2019) Pokolbin, New South Wales, Australia, 1-3 April 2019 Let There Be Rock: The AC/DC Phenomenon Volker Janssen APAS Publications Officer [email protected] ABSTRACT In a successful career spanning more than 45 years, AC/DC have persistently ignored trends in popular music and resolutely stuck to their bluesy, stripped-to-the-bone brand of high- voltage rock ’n’ roll. This paper investigates the AC/DC phenomenon by examining song lyrics and connotations, the band’s work rate, and the vocalist debate (Bon Scott vs. Brian Johnson). Furthermore, a group of 82 hardcore fans is examined to get a better understanding of their passion for the band, and it is outlined how the AC/DC brand is increasingly being marketed to a larger consumer base not limited to music lovers. It was found that the word ‘rock’ is by far the most prominent in AC/DC song titles but lyrically almost half of all AC/DC songs revolve around sex. While the frequency of album releases slowed considerably over time, the band generally played 150 live gigs following each studio album. Bon Scott material continues to account for at least 45% of the songs included in typical AC/DC live sets. Analysis of a questionnaire revealed how committed the cohort of hardcore fans is. They generally became serious fans in their early teens, prefer the older material, experienced their first gig during early adulthood and enjoyed up to 124 gigs since. This paper also demonstrates how one can collect, analyse, interpret and present data.
