President’s Message Hey Everyone, Well maybe by the time you read this, the snow will be gone and so will winter. We can only hope. As announced at the last meeting we will be holding a fish picture contest as we will be printing a calendar for 2017. A group of members will be assigned to pick out the pictures. To help everyone, this week our speakers will be Elsie Swanson and Brian Shrimpton. Both people have a lot of knowledge in taking pictures of fish and their experience will help all of you. Only 1 picture per person can be a winner, but you can enter as many pictures as you want. It's a little early, but next month will be our Anniversary Party. We will have a cookout, a speaker, talking about Cory Catfish and a Chinese raffle with all types of fish. Our meeting will start earlier due to the cookout, so please mark your calendar to arrive around 6:30pm. We will let everyone know the exact time. Lastly, as all of you know, we try to make every meeting different and provide each member many different things for their yearly dues. We are working on the sponge filters and we will have it finalized by the night of the meeting. If there is something you would like the club to do or something you think the club or members could use, please let us know or go to our new Facebook page NEOfish News and tell us what your idea's are. See you Friday, Dan

CAFE Convention – March 12th -13th, 2016 Columbus Area Fish Enthusiasts (CAFE) I drove out from Pittsburgh Pennsylvania to Colum- bus Ohio with a fellow club member, Friday evening, arriving at the hotel at 9:00pm. Checked in and or- dered pizza from a local shop. We hung out in the lobby until we hooked up with some folks in for the convention weekend. Surprisingly, we took a last mi- nute midnight fish room tour of some of the local club members who lived nearby. This was the only time over the weekend we could see local fish rooms. The weekend’s events were supported entirely by club volunteers who dedicated many hours to the planning and carrying out of all events.

Saturday morning at breakfast, sat next to Richard Pierce, one of the speakers for the weekend. We had a short conversation on the subject of native killifish in Mid- west states. While we were talking, had a flashback to 2 years prior at the first ever CAFE Convention. I sat across from Ted Judy and Mike Hellweg during a Saturday morning breakfast and was surprised I had immediate access to ask questions to either speaker. Moving forward to the present, it's really something special being able to have access to experts in the hobby and ask questions to advance under- standing of topics. I am always looking for that edge in BAP (Breeders Award Pro- gram) to get ahead of my peers back home. You don't learn anything by sitting home weekends when you could be out at a convention meeting other breeders and speakers.

The first event to kick off the con- vention was a swap meet. Twenty or more tables were setup in a series of hotel banquet rooms staged to- gether. 10:00am to 12:00pm ven- dors and hobbyists sold everything aquatic related from fish, to equipment, to food, driftwood, pleco caves, books, poret foam, the list goes on and on. I picked up a few must have items. Renewed hellos with fellow hobbyists not seen since the last event. We took a break for lunch. The first speaker Rob McLure gave a presentation on catfish entitled "An overview of spawning, husbandry & raising of corydoradinae fish". A short break www.neo-fish.com

followed by Richard Pierce, "Fish of the Fun- dulopanchax". Dr. Stephan Tanner educated us on "Modern Filtration". And after the evening banquet supper, Spencer Jack presented the "Fish of Uru- guay". Despite the close lineup of speakers, we managed to fit in a couple of shop hops with friends from Detroit, Youngstown, Wooster, and Pittsburgh. Saturday night stayed up late hanging out with fish friends.

Some of the attendees were selling fish out of their hotel room. I picked up a small group of Corydoras dyphyes.

Sunday morning was CAFE's Spring Auction, 11:00am till 5:30pm. The highlight of the auction was the New & Rare fish the club purchased from Rivers to Reefs (R2R) in Columbus. A medium size fish store packed with the highest quality of fish I've ever seen. Their quality is so high; I have gone out of my way on numerous occasions to drive there (3.5 hours each way) on a weekend just to get my hands on some really rare and healthy fish. R2R is my secret weapon when it comes to BAP. When I need 1 fish to pull ahead of the BAP pack in my hometown, I go to R2R. Anyway, CAFE bought a number of wild & healthy species from R2R to sell in their auction. The one bag everyone had their eyes on was the chameleon whiptails, Pseudohemiodon apithanos. It was truly an experience seeing these fish in person for the first time. They are rarely ever imported, and having a chance at owning these beautiful specimens made the weekend com- plete. Of course, I didn't come home with them, but to know someone in the tri-state area will be breeding them and putting fry up for sale soon is a great step forward for the hobby.

Had a really great weekend, thanks to the club of CAFE and all of their dedicate mem- bers. Really wished you could have been there. There will be more conventions coming up before year end. Hope I see you at one or more in the near future. Best Fishes, www.neo-fish.com ~Joe Doyle

Hello everyone, so did you cut grass or shovel snow recently. The weather will get nice soon enough. How is everyone's fish doing? Mine are fine and awaiting for two shows coming up soon. The IFGA has a six show season. These are Guppy shows. The first show was this past October. It's called the annual. The awards dinner from the previous season and start of this years circuit. There's an open division bracket and novice. You can put guppies in both categories. Open bracket has color classes. The color of your fish will determine what class your in . The novice side, doesn't matter on color. Your against whatever males are at that show . I've entered both brackets, but I seem to enter the novice side . My goal is the open division. The annual was held in New England. Next up on April 30th and May 1st is St. Louis. Then onto New Jersey on the 14th and 15th of May. A nice website to check out, www.ifga.org

Tip of the net to all that helped make Neo's first auction of the year a success. Myself, I work Sunday's but still managed to pop in.

There was much planning and preparation put into the auction. Registration was moved to the left which opened up the control table area which was less congested getting to the actual check in . Check in went smoothly. A tip , there's an actual entry form you can have filled out before checking in. Makes it simpler.

The table was moved from being the last table , to the first as you walked down the row. Two auctioneers was a really good idea. You had to pay attention because the items went quickly.

The concession stand was neat, orderly and well priced. Great ideas on food and drinks you could purchase. Well done !

This past week I received a phone call. A family member is moving. They have a pond of Koi. They would like to sell them. I recommended Craig's list and Aqua bid.com Does anyone have any ideas i could tell them . Here's the kicker...the pond is in Virgin- ia. Regards STM www.neo-fish.com

Committee Announcements (cont.) Breeder Award Program (BAP) & Horticultural Award Program (HAP)

March was another great month we had 24 spawns submitted and 14 of them were fish that had not been submitted before. There were some great fish offered up. I noticed the size was slipping again in some cases and I would like to remind everyone that I would rather you held on to them another month so they are larger. They will also probably bring more money so you can buy more fish. I hope some of you have taken advantage of the 2nd fish sale I believe we will be receiving the fish at the meeting. There were at least 7 Target Fish on the list and half of them were tank raised, not to mention all the Plecostomus many of which could be added by request. This month is the first month we will be accepting fish for the Challenges. A lot of the items you bring will be eligible, but the hook is the Target Fish. You must bring in at least one Target Fish and 5 others from different groups to get the Plaque next April. I hope everyone is enjoying the Green Terrors that Chuck Nowakowski donated for the spawning and growth con- test. Remember the first one to turn them in will win a prize and at some point we will be having a Bowl Show where you can flaunt your best one and also win a prize. If anyone has any questions please feel free to contact me via e-mail at [email protected], at the meeting or through the Facebook messaging system if you are a Facebook user.

Cheers, John Chapek

Committee Announcements (cont.) Breeder Award Challenge Program (BACP)

The Challenge...

We will begin accepting fish for this program at the meeting April 15, 2016 and it will continue until the meeting on March 17, 2017 that will be the last date for submissions. Any plaques that are earned will be awarded in April 2017 at our monthly meeting.

This program is an extension of our usual BAP program. The basic program is still as it was and fish may be turned in from any category at any meeting. As you look at the information below you will notice that there are very few Central American, Tanganyikian, and 1 Malawian and no Victorian cichlids. The reason for this is that basically we receive a lot of these and the purpose of the program is to broaden your interests.

If there are fish you would like to have designated as a Target Fish, you may submit it to me for consideration in person, by E-mail to Lotsapetsgar- [email protected] or even through Facebook. Please keep in mind that just because you ask does not mean it will be. The purpose of the Target Fish is to chal- lenge you to breed something a little bit harder. I may add new Target Fish from month to month.

I challenge you to complete 6 challenges in the next 12 months. Those that include at least 1 Target fish will receive a special award the others will get the points. Each of the 6 MUST BE from a different group, in other words you cannot turn in 6 Tetras. Again we are looking to EXTEND our interests. Breeding and Growth Contest

Chuck Nowakowski has graciously donated an entire of Green Ter- rors to the club for a Breeding and Growth contest. I have been holding them for about a month now and I will bringing them to the meeting 6 per bag. If you cannot attend the meeting and there are any left I will have them at the Auction the following Sunday but I WILL NOT HOLD ANY, your best bet is to attend the meeting. The first member to breed them and turn them for BAP will win a prize of some sort. Then sometime in the future Bill Bilski will schedule a special Bowl Show for you to bring in your best and the person that brings in the largest fish will win a prize of some sort, we have not de- cided what the prizes will be so watch this spot.

I am willing to accept BAP entries from those that have already turned them in if you would like to participate and already turned them in.
