Looking at work by artists primarily from Arab and Middle Eastern diasporas working in the US, UK, Canada, and Europe, the study examines how modes of performance in live art, documentary theatre, and participatory performance respond to and comment on the power imbalances, racial formations, and political injustices of these conflicts. Many of these performances are characterized by a deliberate blurring of the distinctions between performance and reality. This has meant that playwrights crafted scripts from the real words of soldiers instead of writing plays; performance artists harmed their real bodies, replicating the violence of war; actors performed in public space; and media artists used new technology to connect audiences to real warzones. This embrace of the real contrasts with postmodern suspicion of hyper-reality—which characterized much political performance in the 1990s—and marks a shift in understandings of the relationship between performance and the real. These strategies allowed artists to contend with the way that war today is also a multimedia attack on the way that reality is constructed and perceived. -

And in the cultural sphere, almost every city in this Communist- ruled country has a brand new statue of Confucius. Confucius is back. Casual observers of China may not know that Confucius had ever left. But Mao identified Confucianism with “imperialism and the feudal class”. During the Cultural Revolution students were told to reject the Four Olds: old culture, old customs, old habits, and old ideas. And “old” in China means Confucius. Ancient books were burned. -

The guerrilla wins if he does not lose. - Henry Kissinger, 1969 The term asymmetric war is a product of the revolution in military affairs (RMA). It can be taken as fresh jargon to distinguish the modern variant from traditional partisan and guerrilla war conducted by irregular bands using unconventional methods. In short, it is nothing new; only the cosmopolitan veneer is so. Since the Indian Army has vast experience dating to the pre- independence period in combating this form of warfare, there is no major cause for concern in being confronted with yet another outbreak of asymmetric warfare within the country or a new Americanism from military schools and think-tanks of a perplexed superpower. While understanding the term asymmetric war, an attempt is made here to see it in the Indian context, and to recommend measures to combat the same. Understanding Asymmetric War Definition The definition of ‘asymmetric warfare’ is best borrowed from the US from where the term has originated. The 1999 Joint Strategy Review specifically defines “asymmetry as something done to military forces to undermine their conventional military strength.” Asymmetric approaches are attempts to circumvent or undermine military strength while exploiting their weaknesses, using methods that differ significantly from the expected method of operations. The Washington Times www.washingtontimes.com Using cues of the past By Arnaud de Borchgrave Published May 10, 2005 From bleeding heart liberals to coldhearted conservative realists, everyone professed shock and awe when Russia's President Vladimir Putin called the breakup of the Soviet Union the greatest geopolitical catastrophe of the 20th century. Yet it was a statement of the obvious. Because that's precisely what it was. No empire in history had collapsed so suddenly and so completely. Millions of Russian citizens found themselves stranded in both the inner empire (the Baltic States and other former Soviet republics) and outer dominion (East Europe, Angola, Cuba, Vietnam), not to mention client states (Libya, Syria, North Korea). The world balance of power, maintained by MAD (Mutual Assured Destruction), was dispelled with the fall of the Berlin Wall. A defeated Soviet army was forced to withdraw from Afghanistan in 1989, and later that year from East Germany and the other former East European satellites. For the satraps in the Kremlin, it was an unmitigated disaster. Millions more at home were out of work and on the dole -- but there was no dole. Armaments plants ground to a halt and nuclear engineers and scientists struggled to survive on $200 a month or less. Russia's nuclear storage depots guarded by security personnel that had not been paid in months. Anything and everything was for sale -- or plunder. Organized crime gangs teamed up with former KGB operatives who used their knowledge of financial conduits abroad to literally plunder the country. Some $220 billion in gold, diamonds, precious metals and other assets moved abroad between 1990 and 1995. -

Changing views of tianxia in pre-imperial discourse* Yuri Pines (Jerusalem) Half a century ago Joseph Levenson defined the traditional concept of tianxia 天下 (“world”, “All under Heaven”) as referring primarily to a cultural realm, being “a regime of value”, as opposed to a political unit, guo 國, “a state”.1 The implication is clear: tianxia was a supra-political unit, larger than the manageable Zhongguo 中國, “the Central States”, i.e. the Chinese empire. Authors of modern Chinese dictionaries, such as Cihai 辭海 or Hanyu da cidian 漢語大詞典, disagree with Levenson: they suggest that tianxia was a political unit basically identical with Zhongguo, while its meaning as “the larger world” was secondary. The difference is more than purely semantic; for Levenson, at least, the distinction between tianxia and guo had far-reaching implications on China’s problematic entrance into the modern world of nation-states.2 Levenson’s study relied primarily on late imperial discourse. In this article I will complement his research by tracing the origins of the term tianxia and its earliest usage. I shall try to verify first whether Levenson’s juxtaposition of cultural and political meanings of this term is traceable to pre- imperial texts, and second, what were the limits of pre-imperial tianxia and whether or not it was confined to the Central States, i.e. the Zhou 周 realm. A preliminary warning which has to be made is that unlike many other terms of political and philosophical discourse, the precise meaning of the term tianxia was never scrutinized by pre-imperial statesmen and thinkers, and its usage remained quite loose, reminiscent of the modern usage of such terms as “nation”, “humanity” or “the world” by politicians and journalists, rather than the rigid lexi- con of philosophical discourse.3 A single text, and sometimes a single passage, could refer to tianxia in two or more different, even contradictory, ways. -

The study focuses on Chinese academic discussions, which attempt to develop a ’Chinese theory of international politics’, and especially on the so called ’tianxia theory’ (天下论, tianxia lun), which is one of the most influential initiatives within these discussions. Tianxia theorists study imperial China’s traditional system of foreign relations and claim that the current international order, which is based on competing nation states, should be replaced with some kind of world government that would oversee the good of the whole planet. -

Operation Anaconda: Playing the War in Afghanistan
Democratic Communiqué 26, No. 2, Fall 2014, pp. 84-106 Medal of Honor: Operation Anaconda: Playing the War in Afghanistan Tanner Mirrlees This article examines the confluence of the U.S. military and digital capitalism in Medal of Honor: Operation Anaconda (MOHOA), a U.S. war-on-Afghanistan game released for play to the world in 2010. MOHOA’s convergent support for the DOD and digital capitalism’s interests are analyzed in two contexts: industry (ownership, development and marketing) and interactive narrative/play (the game’s war simulation, story and interactive play experience). Following a brief discussion of the military-industrial-communications-entertainment complex and video games, I analyze MOHOA as digital militainment that supports digital capi- talism’s profit-interests and DOD promotional goals. The first section claims MO- HOA is a digital militainment commodity forged by the DOD-digital games com- plex and shows how the game’s ownership, development and advertisements sup- port a symbiotic cross-promotional relationship between Electronic Arts (EA) and the DOD. The second section analyzes how MOHOA’s single player mode simu- lates the “reality” of Operation Anaconda and immerses “virtual-citizen-soldiers” in an interactive story about warfare.
