During a long village stay in 1947-1948, David and Isabel Crook observed the campaign to adjust an earlier round of land distribution. This photograph was taken at a village meeting conducted by a work team in Ten Mile Inn's temple courtyard. Isabel Crook writes, “The work team made a special point of getting the women to be active in the movement and pressed them to attend. The ones that came were mainly the young wives with their babies. They were not asked to sit separately but this was what tradition called for. Cottage weaving was one of the main cottage industries that supplemented income from farming. Purple Displaces Crimson: The Wakan Dialectic as Polemic The cultural phenomenon known as wakan, the creative juxtaposition of Japanese (wa)and Chinese (kan) elements, can be difficult to articulate given the ambiguity involved in defining the boundaries of what makes something Chinese or Japanese, especially over time, or according to the unique perspectives of any given individual. Even at the seemingly irreducible level oflanguage, the apposition oflogographs expressing Chinese poems (kanshi), for example, and syllabic kana script expressing Japanese waka poems are not without nuances that render them fluid, interdependent, and aesthetically unified. Consider a 1682rendition of the Wakan roeishu (FIG.1), the famous eleventh-century anthology of Chinese and Japanese poetry, in which four columns of darkly inked logo graphs render fragments of Chinese poems nearly twice the size of the attenuated columns of kana to the left.' While the powerful Chinese graphs brushed in an assertive running script may at first seem clearly distinct and visually dominant, a closer look reveals an underlying merging of wa and kan in the work through, among other things, the paper decoration. -

It is printed in March and mailed to all AAS members and conference attendees. 70 Years of Asian Studies The Association for Asian Studies (AAS), formed in 1941 as the Far Eastern Association, has evolved from a few hundred scholars focused largely on China and Japan to well over 7,000 members worldwide representing all the regions and countries of Asia. Similarly, from its first conference, held in Leiden in 1998 and more On the Cover recently in Asian venues, the International Convention of Asia Scholars (ICAS) has grown to become the largest biennial Asian studies conference outside of the U.S. While the structure, activities, and culture of each organization vary somewhat, they share the common goals of promoting the study of Asia and transcending the boundaries between disciplines, nations, and geographic origins of scholars of Asia. This special conference of the AAS and ICAS will celebrate the 70th anniversary of the AAS by combining elements of each organization’s respective annual and biennial meetings and is expected to be the largest ever gathering of Asian studies scholars and students. -
