PERFORMED IDENTITIES: HEAVY METAL MUSICIANS BETWEEN 1984 and 1991 Bradley C. Klypchak a Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate
PERFORMED IDENTITIES: HEAVY METAL MUSICIANS BETWEEN 1984 AND 1991 Bradley C. Klypchak A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY May 2007 Committee: Dr. Jeffrey A. Brown, Advisor Dr. John Makay Graduate Faculty Representative Dr. Ron E. Shields Dr. Don McQuarie © 2007 Bradley C. Klypchak All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Dr. Jeffrey A. Brown, Advisor Between 1984 and 1991, heavy metal became one of the most publicly popular and commercially successful rock music subgenres. The focus of this dissertation is to explore the following research questions: How did the subculture of heavy metal music between 1984 and 1991 evolve and what meanings can be derived from this ongoing process? How did the contextual circumstances surrounding heavy metal music during this period impact the performative choices exhibited by artists, and from a position of retrospection, what lasting significance does this particular era of heavy metal merit today? A textual analysis of metal- related materials fostered the development of themes relating to the selective choices made and performances enacted by metal artists. These themes were then considered in terms of gender, sexuality, race, and age constructions as well as the ongoing negotiations of the metal artist within multiple performative realms. Occurring at the juncture of art and commerce, heavy metal music is a purposeful construction. Metal musicians made performative choices for serving particular aims, be it fame, wealth, or art. These same individuals worked within a greater system of influence. Metal bands were the contracted employees of record labels whose own corporate aims needed to be recognized. -

One clear exception is Mycobacterium tuberculosis 19 (Mtb). It is an oBligate human pathogen with limited genetic diversity and a low mutation rate 20 which further lacks any evidence for HGT. Such features should in principle reduce its ability to 21 rapidly evolve AMR. We identify key features in its Biology and epidemiology that allows it to 22 overcome its low adaptive potential. We focus in particular on its innate resistance to drugs, 23 unusual life cycle including an often extensive latent phase and its ability to shelter from 24 exposure to antimicroBial drugs within cavities it induces in the lungs. 2 25 So Special 26 The rapid increase of antimicrobial resistance (AMR; see Glossary) in Bacteria is driven By the 27 widespread use, abuse and misuse of antiBiotics, and constitutes one of the most challenging 28 healthcare proBlems gloBally. The Baphomet a Discourse Analysis of the Symbol in Three Contexts
UPPSALA UNIVERSITY Department of Theology History of Religions and Social Sciences of Religion C2, 15 credits Spring 2013 Supervisor: Eva Hellman The Baphomet A discourse analysis of the symbol in three contexts by Carl Karlson-Weimann Abstract This essay examines how the Baphomet symbol is understood in three different contexts. Firstly, the understanding of the Baphomet is analysed in the book Dogme et Rituel de la Haute Magie, written by the French 19th century occultist Éliphas Lévi. Secondly, I analyse the symbol in The Satanic Bible by Anton Szandor LaVey, the person responsible for having introduced Satanism to modernity. Thirdly, the Baphomet as understood in contemporary metal music culture is analysed. Ultimately, I find the Baphomet to be viewed as a symbol associated with Satan, but in very different ways. The reason to why these differences exist I find to be partially explained by the initial mystery surrounding the Baphomet. The understanding of the Baphomet depends also on the role of Satan in each context. Due to Satan representing different things in the three different contexts, so does the Baphomet. Black Metal Och Provokation: En Autenticitetsdiskurs

The Global and the Local in Max Cavalera's Music
Jelena Gligorijevic THE GLOBAL AND THE LOCAL IN MAX CAVALERA’S MUSIC PROJECTS The career of the originally Brazilian trash/death metal musician Massimiliano Antonio ‘Max’ Cavalera represents an excellent case study for understanding the dynamic and complex processes of ‘glocalisation’ of music, in which the elements of the global and the local operate simultaneously across economic and cultural domains (Shuker 1994: 72). On the one hand, both Cavalera’s ex- ploration of trash/death metal as a popular music genre of Western origins, and his success on the global music market, can illustrate music’s mobility across space – facilitated by the global “fows of capital, new technologies and styles” (Connell and Gibson 2003: 18) and dictated by the efforts of transnational en- tertainment companies to continue expanding their marketplace. On the other hand, Cavalera’s hybrid music projects, which are based on a specifc fusion of metal and World Music (in particular, local musical traditions of Brazil’s in- digenous peoples), and which have come to inaugurate his ‘poetics’ from the early 1990s onwards, exemplify music’s ability to construct a particular geo- graphical location and cultural identity. The present research aims to capture and unpack this dual nature of music – both its ‘fuidity’ and ‘fxity’ – in the era of globalization using Cavalera’s musical career and output as an inspiring and instructive case in point. © SES & Jelena Gligorijevic, Etnomusikologian vuosikirja 2011, vol. 23, ss. 140 – 164. THE GLOBAL AND THE LOCAL IN MAX CAVALERA’S MUSIC PROJECTS The Extreme Metal Scene and Cavalera’s Scenic and Musical Profle Development The analysis of the multidirectional ways in which the local and the global inter- sect in Cavalera’s development can be underpinned by a number of theoretical frameworks drawing on the growing corpus of metal scholarship. -
