Dancing on Terra -- with Terror: Disciplines Reframing Terrifying Alternative view of segmented documents via Kairos 20th March 2004 | Draft Dancing on Terra -- with Terror Disciplines reframing terrifying relationships -- / -- Introduction Since the 9/11 attack on the World Trade Center, the response has been framed in strictly binary logic: " You are either with us, or you are against us". All governments and peoples of the world are urged to engage in the "war against terrorism" -- in defence of the highest values of civilization. The focus of this war, and any response to further attacks, is on how to stop terrorists. Stopping terrorists is framed as a question of capturing any who may be suspect (whatever the evidence), incarcerating them (without trial), or killing them (whether in military action or through covert assassination). The resources devoted to remedy the impoverishment and injustice, which many recognize as a breeding ground for terrorists, have diminished at a rate commensurate with the increase in resources allocated to "security", whether in the form of military equipment, surveillance, or the associated personnel. Very little effort is made, or called for -- by the media, politicians or engaged groups -- to look beyond the immediate action of terrorists to address the conditions that give rise to them. The focus of conceptual and financial resources is on proximate causes of violence and not on the contextual causes which willl continue to ensure that new terrorists emerge. The following explores the possibility that many disciplines, representing the core intellectual achievement of modern civilization, have developed conceptual approaches that reframe the crude simplicity of the current focus on proximate causes of terrifying relationships. The concern here is to enlarge the framework within which the relationship with terror can be addressed. The argument is that despite the level of resources allocated to the "war against terror", it is other subtler approaches that have vital insights to offer -- and may in the end prove the key to the challenge. As with the "war on drugs", and other "wars", the track record suggests that the "war on terror" will continue for many decades -- as repeatedly predicted by Donald Rumsfeld, in comparing it to the Cold War [more]. This exploration follows from early explorations, notably Transforming the Encounter with Terrorism (2002), Ways of Thinking, Perception and Analysis: 911+ Questions in Seeking UnCommon Ground (2001); Discovering Richer Patterns of Comprehension to Reframe Polarization (1998); and Planetary Challenge of 12-fold Strategic Marriage (2003) Method The approach taken here is to identify from a systematic set of disciplines, collected in association with the work on the Encyclopedia of World Problems and Human Potential, those that sugget alternative ways of thinking about relationships -- and especially those that terrify. These are clustered according to a classification currently used for that publication, and for the Yearbook of International Organizations, as explained in Functional Classification in an Integrative Matrix of Human Preoccupations (1982). He has been a figure in existing accounts of the naturalist tradition between 1890 and 1940 that have defended the relative contribution of naturalists to the modem evolutionary synthesis. These accounts, while useful, have primarily examined the natural history of the period in view of how it led to developments in the 193 Os and 40s, removing pre-Synthesis naturalists like Jordan from their research programs, institutional contexts, and disciplinary homes, for the sake of synthesis narratives. This dissertation redresses this picture by examining a naturalist, who, although often cited as important in the synthesis, is more accurately viewed as a man working on the problems of an earlier period. This study examines the specific problems that concerned Jordan, as well as the dynamic institutional, international, theoretical and methodological context of entomology and natural history during his lifetime. It focuses upon how the context in which natural history has been done changed greatly during Jordan's life time, and discusses the role of these changes in both placing naturalists on the defensive among an array of new disciplines and attitudes in science, and providing them with new tools and justifications for doing natural history. One of the primary intents of this study is to demonstrate the many different motives and conditions through which naturalists came to and worked in natural history.

Many myrmecologists all over the world offer useful information as text files, images or databases. A good part of the information focuses on re- gional faunas and biogeographic regions, with updated species checklists and geographic distribution maps. Many internet sites deal with specific ant groups or single genera and provide dichotomous and sometimes interactive identification keys, extensive information about the biology and/or geographic distribution of the species. Text information is often illustrated with images of living or dry mounted ants. Additionally, detailed pages about anatomy, mounting of ants, colony husbandry or ant conservation (red lists) can be found. In discussion forums it is possible to exchange facts and thoughts about all myrmecological facets with other interested people. A special offer for taxonomists is the increasing number of databases about museum collections and their type catalogues. Recently, valuable collections have been received as a result of the current dredging operations of the M alliin, a boat of the Fi hand Game Division, Territorial Board of Agriculture and Forestry. These collections clearly reveal the presence of a crustacean fauna a ut the Hawaiian Islands. at depths of about 10 fathoms and beyond, which is not seen on the shallow reefs. Many of the unique species taken nearly 50 years ago by the Albatross of the United States Fis Com~ mission have again been brought to view. Other rare crustaceans recorded in the report were receive1 from the Honolulu Aquarium and came from fish traps operated b~ com­ mercial fishermen off the coast of Oahu at depths ranging aro~nd 16 fathoms. These specimens show that fauna at these depths har close affinities with that of the western Pacific and the Indian Ocej. Charles R. Darwin Abstract Here we review Charles Darwin’s relation to beetles and developments in coleopteran systematics in the last two centuries. Darwin was an enthusiastic beetle collector. He used beetles to illustrate different evolutionary phenomena in his major works, and astonishingly, an entire sub-chapter is dedicated to beetles in “The Descent of Man”. During his voyage on the Beagle, Darwin was impressed by the high diversity of beetles in the tropics and expressed, to his surprise, that the majority of species were small and inconspicuous. Despite his obvious interest in the group he did not get involved in beetle taxonomy and his theoretical work had little immediate impact on beetle classification. The development of taxonomy and classification in the late 19th and earlier 20th centuries was mainly characterised by the exploration of new character systems (e.g., larval features, wing venation). In the mid 20th century Hennig’s new methodology to group lineages by derived characters revolutionised systematics of Coleoptera and other organisms. As envisioned by Darwin and Ernst Haeckel, the new Hennigian approach enabled systematists to establish classifications truly reflecting evolution.

Istilah ini berasal dari dua perkataan Latin – entomon bermakna serangga dan logos bermakna ilmu pengetahuan. Batasan dan Ruang Lingkup Entomologi Secara terbatas, Entomologi adalah ilmu yang mempelajari serangga (insecta). Akan tetapi, arti ini seringkali diperluas untuk mencakup ilmu yang mempelajari Arthropoda (hewan beruas-ruas) lainnya, khususnya laba-laba dan kerabatnya (Arachnida atau Arachnoidea), serta luwing dan kerabatnya (Millepoda dan Centipoda). Dimasukannya Arthropoda lain sebagai bagian yang dibahas pada Entomologi karena ada hubungan evolusioner/filogenetis dalam konteks pembahasan taksomis dengan serangga. Selain itu dalam konteks fungsional Arthropoda lain berperan sebagai pemangsa dan pesaing bagi serangga. Melalui entomologi kita akan diajak memgenal serangga lebih jauh. Sebagai disiplin ilmu yang sudah berkembang pesat entomologi kini dapat dibagi menjadi dua cabang ilmu yaitu Entomologi Dasar dan Entomologi Terapan. Oceanography has developed in a wonderful way. The limnology advocated by Forel at the London Congress of 1895 has become a separate flourishing branch; only the hydrology of running water is still in a very unsatisfactory state. The fact that it has not a name of its own corresponding to oceanography or to limnology, indicates its neglected position, but there can be no doubt that it must gain equal rank and follow the same evolution as the two other above-named branches of hydrology.
