Textual and Musical Intermedialities in Italian Literature and Film by Erika Marina Nadir Doctor of Philosophy in Italian University of California, Los Angeles, 2017 Professor Luigi Ballerini, Chair This dissertation is a comparative study of Italian opera, literature, and film, and traces the textual and musical intermedialities among the art forms. Using the analytical prisms of Elio Vittorini’s linguaggio unitario del musicista and Giuseppe Verdi’s notion of verità, I examine the myriad ways that literature, film, and music interact and the effects on the respective arts. Chapter 1 focuses on literature that is written in such a way as to evoke music. I analyze three texts and their musical components: Vittorini’s Italian Resistance novel, Uomini e no; the postmodern novel Passavamo sulla terra leggeri by Sergio Atzeni—a soundscape of text that mimics contemporary opera structure; and Manzoni’s I promessi sposi, which was the inspiration for Giuseppe Verdi’s notion of verità in art. -
Introduction 1 Sounding Fascism in Cinema
Notes Introduction 1. For an extensive analysis on the subject, the article “Music as Torture / Music as Weapon” in the Transcultural Music Review by Cusick traces the history of the research, and the use of sound (musical and non), for war; an extensive quote from her work demonstrates power’s appropriation of the sheer power of sound: “Acoustic weapons” have been in development by Department of Defense contractors since at least the 1997 creation of the Joint Non- Lethal Weapons Task Force, accounting for 1/3 of the Task Force’s budget in 1998–99. The earliest contract I know to have been let for such a weapon was on November 18, 1998, authorizing now- defunct Synetics Corporation to produce a tightly focused beam of infrasound—that is, vibration waves slower than 100 vps [vibrations per second]—meant to produce effects that range from “disabling or lethal.” In 1999, Maxwell Technologies patented a Hyper-Sonic Sound System, another “highly directional device . designed to control hostile crowds or disable hostage takers.” The same year Primex Physics International patented both the “Acoustic Blaster,” which produced “repetitive impulse waveforms” of 165dB, direct- able at a distance of 50 feet, for “antipersonnel applications,” and the Sequential Arc Discharge Acoustic Generator, which produces “high intensity impulsive sound waves by purely electrical means.” 1 Sounding Fascism in Cinema 1. All translations from Italian texts used in the work are mine. 2. The Laurel & Hardy Silents – Lost Films Versus Kirch/Universal/Kinowelt
The Laurel & Hardy Silents – Lost Films versus Kirch/Universal/Kinowelt (I am always interested in updates/additions to the document. Please email: steve at updown dot org dot uk) This is a comparison of the Laurel and Hardy silent films as presented on the 21-DVD box set ("Kirch") from Universal (in the UK) versus "The Lost Films of Laurel and Hardy" DVD set ("Lost") from Image Entertainment (formerly available in the US). The former restorations were carried out for the German Kirch Group, and supervised by Richard Bann. The latter were carried out by Michael Agee on behalf of Richard Feiner & Co. As well as the UK 21-DVD box set, the Kirch Group copies also form the basis of other releases from Universal: in Spain, in the Benelux countries, in France, in Italy, and in the Scandinavian countries; and also the releases from Kinowelt in Germany. For the most part, the basic copies used are the same in these releases, although there are slight differences in bitrate and the amount of sharpening applied to the picture. Also some titles here and there seem to have had some digital cleanup applied for their Continental releases (see "Habeus Corpus" and "Sons of the Desert" on Kinowelt for example). Please note that the “Lost” films reviewed here are from the original “The Lost Films of Laurel and Hardy” release (a private initiative by the latter-day Hal Roach Studios before being made more widely available through Image Entertainment) and not the botched half-assed private attempt by Michael Agee to re-release these films circa 2010 (of which few people, having already paid the money, eventually managed to get copies). -
