Accepted 15 October, 2013 Twelve genotypes of gerbera (Gerbera jamesonii) were evaluated to determine the genetic variability, heritability, genetic advance, and genetic advance as percent of mean for 13 contributing characters. Significant variations were recorded for the various characters studied. Phenotypic and genotypic coefficients of variation were highest for the number of leaves per plant, number of clumps per plant and leaf area index, indicating presence of sufficient genetic variability for selection in these traits. High heritability and high genetic advance for number of leaves per plant, leaf area index and fresh weight indicated the presence of additive gene effects in these traits and their amicability for direct selection. The non additive gene effects were evident in petal thickness, hollowness of the stalk, fresh weight, flower diameter, stalk diameter and neck diameter thus, warranting use of heterosis breeding for these characters. The selection on the basis of number of leaves per plant, number of clumps per plant and leaf area index will be more effective for further breeding programme. Abstract: Carnation (Dianthus caryophyllus) is one of the most cultivated flowers around the world for producing of cut flowers. This paper assessed the efficacy of nanosilver (NS) as an antibactericidal agent in extending the vase life of cut flowers of carnation (Dianthus caryophyllus L.). Vase solutions were consisting of NS concentrations in 5, 10, 20, 40 and 80 ppm included sucrose 6 percent added in all treatments. Results showed that all NS treatments were combined with sugar extended the vase life of carnation flowers significantly compared with control. Observations indicated that NS treatments inhibited the growth of microorganisms in vase solution and considerably extend the vase life of cut flowers of carnation. Here we build on a recent analysis of an incomplete data set that was assembled from the literature for a set of 50 campanulid taxa. To this data set we first added newly generated DNA sequence data for the same set of genes and taxa. Second, we sequenced three additional cpDNA coding regions (ca. 8,000 bp) for the same set of 50 campanulid taxa. Finally, we assembled the most comprehensive sample of cam- panulid diversity to date, including ca. 17,000 bp of cpDNA for 122 campanulid taxa and five outgroups. Simply filling in missing data in the 50-taxon data set (rendering it 94% complete) resulted in a topology that was similar to earlier studies, but with little additional resolution or confidence. -

Kimilsungia, which was named by Sukarno, the first President of the Republic of Indonesia, reflecting the desire of the progressive people of the world, is loved by mankind not only because it is beautiful but also it is symbolic of the greatness of President Kim Il Sung. The editorial board issues Encyclopedia of Kimilsungia in reflection of the unanimous will of the Korean people and the world’s progressive people who are desirous to bloom Kimilsungia more beautifully and propagate it more widely on the occasion of the centenary of the birth of President Kim Il Sung. The book introduces in detail how Kimilsungia came into being in the world, its propagation, Kimilsungia festivals and exhibitions held in Korea and foreign countries every year, events held on the occasion of the anniversary of the naming of the flower, and its biological features and cultivating techniques the Korean botanists and growers have studied and perfected. And edited in the book are the typical literary works depicting Kimilsungia and some of gift plants presented to President Kim Il Sung by foreign countries. In addition, common knowledge of flower is compiled. The editorial board hopes this book will be a help to the flower lovers and people of other countries of the world who are eager to know and grow Kimilsungia. -
Rapid Plant Regeneration from Gerbera Jamesonii Bolus Callus Cultures

Croat. 61 (2), 125–134, 2002 CODEN: ABCRA25 ISSN 0365–0588 Rapid plant regeneration from Gerbera jamesonii Bolus callus cultures CHENNA REDDY ASWATH*, MEWA LAL CHOUDHARY Division of Ornamental Crops, Indian Institute of Horticultural Research, Bangalore 560089, India A high frequency shoot organogenesis and plant establishment protocol has been devel- oped for Gerbera jamesonii from ex vitro leaf derived callus. The optimal callus was de- veloped on Murashige and Skoog (MS) basal medium supplemented with 0.4 mg L–1 6-benzylaminopurine (BAP), 4.0 mg L–1 a-naphthalene acetic acid (NAA) and 3% (w/v) sucrose. Two callus types differing in their structures and growth rates were observed. A friable and non-chlorophyllous callus with high growth rate appeared at the cut surfaces of the explant, and a compact chlorophyllous callus. The rate of shoot bud regeneration was positively correlated with the concentration of growth regulators in the nutrient media. The explants were highly responsive (83.3%) in a medium containing 2 mg L–1 NAA and 1mgL–1 BAP after 3 weeks of callus transfer to a medium. Regenerated plantlets were transferred to soil where they grew normally with a survival rate of 95%. This protocol of- fers rapid build up of selected clones and opens up prospects for using biotechnological approaches for gerbera improvement. Poole Imperial College London – Wye Campus UNITED KINGDOM Abstract This paper synthesizes research findings on supply chain arrangements and mechanisms in the business-to-business relationships encountered in supply chains distributing fresh vegetables to Ho Chi Minh City. Eleven months were spent in the field from July 2003 to May 2004 to conduct in-depth interviews with stakeholders in the chain. The links between important elements of good supply chain management practice and performance are illustrated by concrete examples from in-depth case studies. The positive impacts on performance of the following elements of business-to-business relationships are reviewed: long-term commitment, coordination and joint planning, market orientation and information sharing, frequency of communication, and innovation. The results show that parallel vegetable supply chains differ in their structure and in the existence or lack of formal links (contracts) between business partners. However, the five elements of good supply chain management practice which are reviewed can be identified at varying degrees in all supply chains as strategies to achieve higher levels of performance. This research shows how all stakeholders in the fresh produce marketing channels – from small farmers and rural collectors to an urban Cash & Carry outlet and its customers in the catering industry – strive to reach a common goal of better performance. -

Integrated Pest Management FEB 2016 Missouri Environment & Garden Monitoring, Detection and Management of Lettuce Drop caused by Sclerotinia spp. Zelalem Mersha, Assistant Professor and State Extension Specialist Biology and life cycle of the lettuce drop fungi The fungal pathogens in the genus Sclerotinia are known to cause diseases that are difficult to deal with on a wide range of crops. Lettuce is affected by two of these species, S. sclerotiorum and S. minor. Either of the two species may predominate on a given farm at a particular time. Both species may also exist in the same field as long as the prevailing weather favors them and, more importantly, based on the crop histories. S. minor Fig. 1. On lettuce, the type of damage inflicted by these fungi has two phases depending on when it started: a) the damping- off phase which attacks the seedling stages, and b) the field phase which causes a watery soft rot of lower leaves and crown areas (Fig. 1, left). This is followed by wilting and limping, leading to an obvious symptom commonly referred as DROP. Lettuce drop caused by Sclerotinia species is known to be a serious problem of lettuce production worldwide. Both species produce black, hard, seed-like resting bodies called sclerotia (sing.
