Mrs. Resler seconded the motion. Roll call vote indicated: Ayes: Mr. Canning, Mrs. Resler, Mr. Johnson, Mrs. Jones, Mrs. Kampwirth, Ms. Stearns Nays: None Abstain: Mrs. Gleason 4 Dr. Kibelkis introduced Mr. Mike Mecozzi as the recipient of the Board Recognition Board Recognition Award of the Month. Mr. Mecozzi’s dedication to the Freshman Learning Center Award of the Month has helped freshmen build confidence in academics and participation in activities and athletics. Mrs. Gleason presented Mr. Mecozzi with a plaque in his honor. 5 Allyson Reed and Deysi Garcia provided the Good News Report for Bremen High Good News Reports School, including: This year’s St. Baldrick’s event was a huge success; Fine Arts students have been showcasing their talents at a number of recent events; African American History Month was celebrated with an amazing evening of music, step, gospel choir, poetry and more; Authors Chessy Prout and Jenn Abelson spoke with students about their book I Have a Right To, which opens discussion and raises awareness about sexual violence; The GSA Club volunteered their time at the Ronald McDonald House for the fourth straight year; and 75 students attended the 36th Annual United States Hispanic Leadership Institute Pep Rally and College Fair in Chicago. Lauren Berry and Sean Ford provided the Good News Report for Tinley Park High School, including: Carl Holup received the Eleanor Ferraro Fine Arts Scholarship; Todd Bajzek placed 1st at the 43rd Chicago Regional Bridge Building Contest and advances to the International Bridge Building Contest in April; teachers Maggie 2018-0320 1 O’Connor and Laura Munoz have been named Outstanding Activity Advisors by the Illinois Directors of Students Activities; the musical talent at the 12th Annual Jazz Café was amazing; and seven seniors signed Letters of Commitment to play sports in college. Hillcrest High School students Kevin Bautista and Nia Brown spoke about their experiences at Operation Snowball. Kevin said Snowball was uplifting, people encouraged him to open up and let him speak his mind. He would recommend this event to his friends. Nia said a friend told her that the event was warm and welcoming and she was right. Incredible stories were shared and all were accepting. She came out of the event a changed person. Jeff Taylor provided the Good News Report for Oak Forest High School, including: The Band and Choirs traveled to Disney World where they attended workshops and performed at the park; the Science Team won 1st Place at the 2018 SSC Science Competition; the Drama Club will present The Addams Family on April 20-22; the Wrestling program had six individuals earn a trip to the State Tournament; and the Girls’ Soccer Team visited Smith Crossing Nursing Home as part of their participation in the PepsiCo Showdown Tournament, which encourages community service and making a difference on and off the field. 1 Dr. Kibelkis introduced teachers Gina Arguelles and Mayra Ortega, who sponsor the School Presentations Dreamers Club at Bremen High School. Discussions have included DACA, scholarships, FAFSA, and college acceptance essays. Club member America Mata read an article she wrote for the Bremen High School newspaper. The article has received a lot of positive feedback. Dr. Corinne Williams, Mrs. Renee Mack and Mr. Mike Boniface presented information on the Alternative Education Program. A history of alternative education programs was reviewed. The program’s academic and social-emotional goals were presented. There are 21 various pathways available (i.e. emergency medical responder, emergency medical technician, welding, digital electronics, web programming, and small business management/entrepreneurship.) This blended curriculum would be available to at risk students first and eventually to all students. 2 Ms. Stearns opened the floor to the public for comments. Ms. Sandy Lessentine Communications read a prepared statement regarding the Board’s consideration of her dismissal. Ms. Cara Bucci, a Hillcrest High School math teacher, asked the Board to consider Ms. Lessentine’s contract for next year. There being no further communications Ms. Stearns closed the floor to the public. 3 Dr. Kendall reported the following: Superintendent’s Report Freedom of Information Since the last regular Board meeting, we received the following Freedom of Information Act requests: Mr. Stephen Chichelli, of SmartProcure, requested purchase order information from November 9, 2017 to date. This request has been completed. Ms. Theresa Yoon, of SEIU Local 1, requested our food service contract. This request has been completed. 2018-0320 2 Ms. Sulema Griffin, of Sheet Metal Works, requested the name of the HVAC contractor that will be working on the Oak Forest High School field house. This request has been completed. Superintendent’s Report Later in tonight’s meeting, the Board will be authorizing staffing for the 2018-19 school year. The total staff is being reduced by 3.4 teachers, however, we are adding additional staff in the Student Support Services Department to address some imbalances in programming and services provided. This recommendation comes after hours of extensive and creative planning, and is both fiscally responsible and appropriate. Dr. Kendall thanked and congratulated all administrators on a job well done. Dr. Kendall congratulated our District Lacrosse Team, who beat Montini Catholic 10-6 at its first home meet. Dr. Kendall noted that our two news Boys’ Volleyball Teams are looking forward to starting their seasons. Bremen High School’s team will hold its first match on March 22 versus Chicago Christian. Tinley Park High School’s team will hold its first match on April 4 versus Joliet Catholic. He wished both teams the best of luck. Dr. Kendall publicly thanked our students for making community service a personal choice in their lives. In recent weeks, they have raised nearly $20,000 for St. Baldrick’s, volunteered their time and prepared food at Ronald McDonald House, donated blood that would equate to 450 lives saved, filled 300 care packages for the homeless, became certified in CPR, and packed over 200 boxes for the Feed My Starving Children Organization. 1 Mr. Canning reported that he attended the Tinley Park protest against gun violence. Board Member He is glad the administration took a stand to not make consequences for students Reports who attended. He applauded Dr. Kendall, Dr. Nolan and Dr. Couwenhoven. The protest was peaceful. Mr. Canning also noted that the police department did a wonderful job. Mrs. Resler congratulated the Fine Arts Department on a wonderful music festival. She reported that the performances and art work were amazing. Mrs. Kampwirth thanked the Ferraro family for the annual scholarship opportunity for our students. Ms. Stearns commended the students who participated in the protest against gun violence, noting that they asserted their rights in a positive way. She referenced Dr. Kendall’s earlier report on the many hours our students volunteer, even though it is not a requirement in our District. Ms. Stearns also noted that there are no changes in schedules for the BEST members. Mrs. Jones reported that she enjoyed the Dreamers presentation this evening and thanked them for their hard work. She also thanked the students for a peaceful gun violence demonstration. She then announced there is an equity event on April 28 at the Lisle Hyatt Regency. 2 Mrs. Gleason reported that the Finance Committee met on March 12 to discuss Committee Reports monthly items, an Audit Engagement Agreement with Mathieson, Moyski, Austin & Co., and a Board Member conference request. 2018-0320 3 Mr. Johnson reported that the Teaching & Learning Committee met on March 13 to discuss the New Alternative Education Proposal, Textbook Adoption, and Summer Academy Budgets. Mrs. Resler reported that the Personnel Committee met on March 12 to discuss Certificated staff including recommendations for resignations and a leave request. The committee also discussed Educational Support Personnel recommendations for employment, a leave, a resignation and retirement requests. Recommendations were also made for additional employment positions. 1 Mrs. Morrison presented item 10.1 including Bills, Addendum to Bills, Payroll, and New Business CDS Bills. Mrs. Gleason moved to approve item 10.1. Mr. Johnson seconded the motion. Mrs. Gleason moved to approve item 10.3. Mrs. Resler seconded the motion. Discussion took place regarding what she hoped to gain from the conference, as well as travel time and hotel needs.
