Thaiane Moreira de Oliveira Universidade Federal Fluminense - UFF Niterói – RJ 2018 Aos amigos Marcos Jorge, Paulo Vanderson e Rafael Lage (in memorian), minha eterna gratidão, amor e saudades. ABSTRACT The Japanese and South Korean’s pop media influences have been present in Brazilian society for a long time. If, at the first moment Japanese manga, anime, and TV series appeared massively in Brazilian TV programmes and newsstands, at the second, it is the time of the cultural elements of South Korea to contribute in Brazil with k-pop music and k-dramas, modifying the habits of consumption of a group of young

PRESS RELEASE FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Friday, October 7, 2011 CONTACT: Patrick Finlon, Marketing Director 315-443-2636 or [email protected] Syracuse Stage’s The Boys Next Door Finds Comedy and Compassion in a Group Home for People with Developmental Disabilities (Syracuse, NY)—Meet Arnold Wiggins. He’s basically a nervous person. He lives with Lucien P. Smith who fancies very big books, and Norman who works in the doughnut shop, and Barry who has schizophrenia and has convinced himself that he is a golf pro. In addition to an apartment, these guys share a caseworker named Jack who, despite his genuine concern for his clients, is on the verge of total burn-out. The Boys Next Door is a gentle comedy from the late 80s set in a group home for people who are developmentally disabled. As playwright Tom Griffin reveals the daily struggles of his characters to make sense of their world and their places in it, he reminds us to consider how much we take for granted every day. The Boys Next Door is very funny and very touching. Running October 19 through November 6, The Boys Next Door will be performed in the Archbold Theatre at Syracuse Stage, 820 East Genesee Street. Tickets range $18-$50 and are available at the Syracuse Stage Box Office, 315-443-3275 or www.SyracuseStage.org. The presenting sponsor for The Boys Next Door is The Dorothy and Marshall M. Reisman Foundation. Sponsors are Syracuse University Humanities Center, POMCO Group, Burton Blatt Institute, and Arc of Onondaga (celebrating their 60th anniversary).

Amid the Shadows of Progress: Race and the Struggle for Metropolitan Democracy in Twentieth Century San Antonio by Stephen Arionus A dissertation submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (History) in The University of Michigan 2019 Doctoral Committee: Professor Matthew Lassiter, Chair Associate Professor Maria Cotera Associate Professor Matthew Countryman Associate Professor Anthony Mora Stephen Arionus [email protected] ORCID iD: 0000-0001-6634-7208 © Stephen Arionus 2019 Acknowledgements Graduate school is a collaborative process and I would not be here without the support, guidance, and friendship of so many wonderful people and terrific institutions along the way. My circuitous route to graduate school began at the University of Texas at San Antonio where I met a cadre of wonderful scholars and teachers. Marian Aitches encouraged her students to think broadly about the world and our place within it. She introduced me to the writings of Malcolm X, Sherman Alexie, and Winona LaDuke. But it was reading Howard Zinn’s words that changed my life. Kolleen Guy, Wing Chung Ng, Catherine Nolan-Ferrell, Brian Davies, and Anne Hardgrove taught me the fundamental skills of historical analysis. As did Elizabeth Escobedo, but she also taught me the importance of empathy. Pat Kelly was the consummate teacher and mentor. His zest for teaching and love of history was infectious, but it was his compassion and care for his students that made a nontraditional student like me dream bigger. There was no one more excited about my decision to go to graduate school than Pat Kelly.
