  • JOSE De JUAN MARTINEZ' METODO DE CLARIN (1830)
92 HISTORIC BRASS SOCIETY JOURNAL JOSE de JUAN MARTINEZ' METODO DE CLARIN (1830) Introduction and translation by B. Kenyon de Pascual INTRODUCTION ince most readers will not be familiar with the history and terminology of Spanish brass instruments, it would seem appropriate to introduce Jose de Juan's tutor in its Spanish context. The first point that may usefully be considered is the type of S clarin instrument for which the work was written. The Spanish word has been used for a variety of instruments at different times in the past. It is first to be met with in the literature of the late Middle Ages and the Renaissance. Its use was recorded in the 16th century for processions and bullfights but not for sounding the seven army calls. These were the prerogative of the trumpeters of the Italian school (tromp etas italianos), who were examined by the guild. In the definitions for clarin and bastardo to be found in S. Covarrubias's dictionary Tesoro de la lengua castellana o espanola (Madrid, 1611) the c/arin is described as a small, high-pitched trumpet with a clear and delicate sound. When players using clarino technique reached Spain in the 17th (?) century, they and their instruments were also called clarines. The first cLirin to be officially appointed to the Spanish Chapel Royal was Josef Losqui, or Loschi, described as a Venetian. He was given the post in 1679 (with the obligation to teach interested choirboys) and was succeeded in 1697 by his Spanish pupil and son-in-law, Gregorio Fernandez de la Cuerda.

DON BURROWS QUARTET: SHOWCASE FOR A TALENTED NEWCOMER by Eric Myers _______________________________________________________________ The Don Burrows Quartet with James Morrison The Rothbury Estate, Pokolbin Sydney Morning Herald, April 8, 1980 _______________________________________________________________ t is difficult to imagine a more pleasant afternoon than one spent on the Rothbury Estate, with the sun shining, the wine flowing, and jazz provided I by Don Burrows, George Golla and their colleagues. At this concert, Burrows (clarinet, flute and alto saxophone) and Golla (guitar) gave a roaring display of the swinging, mainstream jazz that is appealing and relaxing for so many people. In their playing, there are few signs of the atonality, chromaticism and dissonance which characterise much contemporary modern jazz, and this perhaps explains their great popularity with middle-of-the-road jazz lovers. Don Burrows (left, flute) and George Golla (guitar): a roaring display of the swinging, mainstream jazz that is appealing and relaxing for so many people…PHOTO COURTESY JAZZ AUSTRALIA Tony Ansell, as always, played the keyboards with high energy and vitality. For many years now, he has been astounding orthodox pianists by playing the keyboard bass with his left hand, while producing brilliant accompaniment and solos on electric piano or synthesiser with his right hand —in effect, playing an instrument with each hand, and enabling either to function independently of the other. I was often surprised to hear the drummer, Stuart Livingston,

ADLER • NOV 6, 2019 ! Twitter " Facebook # Google+ $ Email LEO VAN VELZEN / LEOVANVELZEN.COM Gerry Teekens, founder and proprietor of Criss Cross Jazz, an unassuming Dutch indie label that became a vital repository of recorded jazz from the 1980s onward, died on Oct. 31. He was 83. His death was confirmed by his son, Jerry Teekens, Jr. At the news, tributes poured in from Criss Cross artists old and new, including soprano saxophonist Sam Newsome and guitarist David Gilmore. Formerly a professional drummer, Teekens founded Criss Cross in 1981 with a mission to document swinging, straight-ahead jazz of the highest caliber. At first the roster featured musicians as revered as guitarist Jimmy Raney and saxophonist Warne Marsh, but it grew to include the young and the promising: saxophonists Kenny Garrett, Chris Potter and Mark Turner, to name but a few, and pianists Orrin Evans, Bill Charlap and Benny Green. Countdown Watch later Share Multiple times a year, Teekens would cross the ocean from Enschede, Netherlands (thus the Criss Cross name), taking up at Rudy Van Gelder’s famed studio in New Jersey (and later at Systems Two in Brooklyn) for a full week of recording — knocking out an album a day, in the old-school way. In recent years the Criss Cross aesthetic began to broaden, with artists like alto saxophonist David Binney and trumpeter Alex Sipiagin using electronics and synthesizers, moving beyond the strictures of one-take-and-done while still remaining on board with the label.

A Caravan of Culture: Visitors to Emporia, Kansas by Charles E. Webb INTRODUCTION hat do Ulysses S. Grant, "Buffalo Bill" Cody, Susan B. Anthony, Will Rogers, Ethel Barrymore, and Dr. \Verner Von Braun haye in common"? They were W among the hundreds of famous people that have visited EmpOria, Kansas during the past one hundred years. In dividuals and groups of national and international fame, represen ting the arts, seiencl's. education, politics, and entertainment, have pa~sed before Emporia audiences in a century long parade. Since 1879, this formidable array of personalities has provided informa tion and entertainment to Emporia citizens at an average rate of once eaeh fifteen days, The occasional appearanee of a famous personality in a small city may well be considered a matter of historical coineidence. When, however, such visits are numbered in the hundreds, arc fre quent, and persist for a century, it appears reasonable to rank the phenomenon as an important part of that eity's cultural heritage. Emporia, although located in the interior plains, never ae cepted the role of being an isolated community. It seems that the (own's pioneers eonsidered themselves not on the frontier fringi'" of America, but strategically situated near its heart. From the town's beginning, its inhabitants indicated an intention of being informed and participating members of the national and world communities. To better understand why Emporia was able to attract so many distinguished guests, a brief examination of its early development is required. In the formative years of the city's history wc may identify some of the events, attitudes, and preparations Ihat literally set the stage for a procession of renowned visitors.
