A Survey of Recent New Zealand Writing TREVOR REEVES O achieve any depth or spread in an article attempt• ing to cover the whole gamut of New Zealand writing * must be deemed to be a New Zealand madman's dream, but I wonder if it would be so difficult for people overseas, particularly in other parts of the Commonwealth. It would appear to them, perhaps, that two or three rather good poets have emerged from these islands. So good, in fact, that their appearance in any anthology of Common• wealth poetry would make for a matter of rather pleasurable comment and would certainly not lower the general stand• ard of the book. I'll come back to these two or three poets presently, but let us first consider the question of New Zealand's prose writers. Ah yes, we have, or had, Kath• erine Mansfield, who died exactly fifty years ago. Her work is legendary — her Collected Stories (Constable) goes from reprint to reprint, and indeed, pirate printings are being shovelled off to the priting mills now that her fifty year copyright protection has run out. But Katherine Mansfield never was a "New Zealand writer" as such. She left early in the piece. But how did later writers fare, internationally speaking? It was Janet Frame who first wrote the long awaited "New Zealand Novel." Owls Do Cry was published in 1957. A rather cruel but incisive novel, about herself (everyone has one good novel in them), it centred on her own childhood experiences in Oamaru, a small town eighty miles north of Dunedin -— a town in which rough farmers drove sheep-shit-smelling American V-8 jalopies inexpertly down the main drag — where the local "bikies" as they are now called, grouped in vociferous RECENT NEW ZEALAND WRITING 17 bunches outside the corner milk bar. -

No Middle Ground: Baxter’s Writing of the Self Janet Wilson, University of Northampton, UK In a very real sense all of Baxter’s writing, verse, prose and drama, is autobiographical, for, as has been noted, the impulse to record his life experience in all kinds of writing, and particularly in verse form, was with him from the time he started composing poetry (‘Notes on the Education of a New Zealand Poet’, Collected Prose 2. 217-19; McKay 26). Keeping a prose record in note or diary form alongside the drafts of poems was a habit that he acquired in childhood, and the working and reworking of subjective impressions drawing upon observation, memory, dream and fantasy was part of his education as a poet. This intuitive reach for words to articulate his life experiences suggests he recognised that prose could give voice to his inner world in ways that differed from those of poetry or drama. Prose narrative as a medium reflects the realities of life in a mundane way, as well as dramatically, and Baxter’s early narrative fragments show him in everyday situations and settings grappling with sensations of fear, anxiety, guilt, registering pain and wounding, and using impressionistic modes—dreams, images and reflection—from which to construct textual images of wholeness and self-agency. This indicates that writing was an essential coordinate of the drama of his life. As Vincent O’Sullivan comments, ‘he saw himself as naturally at the centre of forces which made any movement of his own feelings or thought of more than passing significance’ (5), and he aimed to recreate these reactions both in verse and prose. -

One notes, for example, that all but one of the essays are either from the mid-1970s, or the 1990s and early 2000s. The 1980s are conspicuously B absent. This raises immediately unanswered questions. The editor, Michael’s daughter, B Rachael, has chosen to let her father speak for himself — which is fine for the general reader, but a bit frustrating for the scholar. The third group of historians who will find The Silence Beyond of value are those B interested in literary or intellectual history. Almost half of the essays are about writers, B and there is also a brilliant and moving tribute to the photographer Robin Morrison. These pieces on writers are full of fascinating gossip. They are not literary criticism but usually tell of Michael’s personal encounters with the individuals. Janet Frame (in two B essays) and Frank Sargeson are to be expected. But I particularly enjoyed Michael’s B meetings with Dan and Winnie Davin, and a hilarious piece about Charles Brasch. In the company of some boozing student mates, Michael went along to Charles Brasch’s home to enjoy what they expected would be some Saturday night carousing with a fellow writer. That’s what writers did on Saturday nights. But not Charles Brasch. He was fast B B asleep when the knock on the door came, and he was not amused. They had to make do with a thimble-full of sherry! There is also an amusing account of the peregrinations of the Landfall desk which, with legs sawed off unevenly and cut in two, became Frame’s writing desk, following her from one provincial town to another. -

Narrativity and Segmentivity in Contemporary Australian and New Zealand Long Poems and Poem Sequences
1 NARRATIVITY AND SEGMENTIVITY IN CONTEMPORARY AUSTRALIAN AND NEW ZEALAND LONG POEMS AND POEM SEQUENCES BY AIRINI JANE BEAUTRAIS A thesis submitted to the Victoria University of Wellington in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Victoria University of Wellington 2016 2 3 Abstract The PhD in creative writing comprises a critical and a creative component. This thesis explores how poets utilise verse form in order to support and/or undermine narrativity in long poems or poem sequences, and asks the question: what possibilities are offered by verse form that distinguish poetry from other literary narrative genres? Using Rachel Blau DuPlessis’s concept of segmentivity, I consider how segmentation at various formal levels, including sections within a book, poems within a sequence, stanzas, line- breaks, and metre, can affect the narrativity of a text. I also consider segmentivity in relation to the ways in which a text may be narrativized, and to the interactions between narrative and other text types such as lyric and argument. The theoretical framework for the critical component involves a synthesis of approaches from within the fields of narrative theory and literary criticism. The methodology used is a close reading and analysis of case study texts by six New Zealand and Australian poets, written in the period 1990-2010: Dorothy Porter’s The Monkey’s Mask (1994) and What a Piece of Work (1999); Alan Wearne’s The Lovemakers (2008); Tusiata Avia’s Bloodclot (2009); Bill Sewell’s Erebus: A Poem (1999) and The Ballad of Fifty-One (2003); Anna Jackson’s The Gas Leak (2006) and John Kinsella’s Divine Comedy: Journeys Through a Regional Geography (2008). -
