An exhibition celebrating some of Scotland’s finest female scientists www.rse.org.uk All photographs © Ian Georgeson Photography The Royal Society of Edinburgh, Scotland’s National Academy, is Scottish Charity No. SC000470 28 29 As Scotland’s National Academy, the Royal Society of Edinburgh is proud to number amongst its Fellowship some of the most talented leaders, thinkers and practitioners working in Scotland today. In this exhibition, we have chosen to focus on and celebrate some of the exceptional women scientists within the Fellowship. Leaders and pioneers in their fi elds, they are at the vanguard of new ideas, new knowledge and new technologies which are shaping our understanding of the world, supporting a more sustainable use of resources and securing advances in health care. Some are from Scotland, others have chosen to base their research and make their homes here; all of them are making a positive contribution to society. When we approached the women to be part of this exhibition, we asked them Seven of the women featured why they chose to become scientists. The responses were varied and enlightening: for some it was always their dream or passion or they had been encouraged and were or are members of the inspired by family, friends and colleagues. For others, the desire to become a RSE Young Academy of scientist came later whilst studying at university and realising that, not only did Scotland. they enjoy and were good at science but, it was also a realistic career choice. And what a career choice! Throughout the exhibition, we gain a sense of what these women love about their life in science: the joy in discovering and learning new things; the satisfaction that comes from working in teams and collaborating with colleagues from a wide range of disciplines; the pleasure in supporting and nurturing talent; and the fulfi lment that comes from doing something which is They are: making a diff erence to people’s lives and the way in which they live. -

Editor: Julian Marchesi ABSTRACT In this paper, we describe the microbial composition and their predictive metabolic profile in the sea urchin Lytechinus variegatus gut ecosystem along with samples from its habitat by using NextGen amplicon sequencing and downstream bioinformatics analyses. The microbial communities of the gut tissue revealed a near-exclusive abundance of Campylobacteraceae, whereas the pharynx tissue consisted of Tenericutes, followed by Gamma-, Alpha- and Epsilonproteobacteria at approximately equal capacities. -

Loch Etive ICZM Plan
POLICY ZONE B: NORTH CONNEL TO ACHNACREE BAY (CONNEL NARROWS) LANDSCAPE CHARACTERISTICS This zone has a diverse range of adjacent coastal vegetation, including small cultivated fields and woodlands. A well developed hinterland contrasts with the simple uncluttered water surface and largely undeveloped shoreline. Settlement is broadly linear and parallel with the coast throughout the policy zone. SEASCAPE CHARACTERISTICS The seascape is characterised by a narrow elongated fast moving tidal channel, with some subtle bays west of Connel Bridge on the southern side of the Loch. Under the Connel Bridge, the tidal Falls of Lora are recognised as a major natural heritage feature and are a tourist attraction in their own right. Generally the water surface has a feeling of enclosure as the area is contained by low but pronounced slopes and the almost continuous presence of fast moving currents. However, a maritime presence is also reflected in the movement of boats, and the occasional view of open sea. There is good access to Ardmucknish Bay from the pontoon at Camas Bruaich Ruaidhe, although prior permission to use this pontoon must be sought. Access to Falls of Lora is via the two old ferry slipways. The slip at Connel opposite the Oyster Inn has limited car parking facilities and is suitable for shore divers and kayakers, however boats cannot be launched from this slip. -

Glasgow Science Festival Monumental Women in Science Scotland has a rich history as a powerhouse of science and innovation, from the Scottish Enlightenment to the present day. Scots like James Watt and Joseph Black were pioneers whose contributions pushed us into the modern world. But where are the women and what are their stories? Launched in June 2017, Glasgow Science Festival’s project ‘Monumental’ invited the public and local organisations to help uncover these hidden gems and explore forgotten female Scottish scientists. Who are they? What was their field? What was their contribution? Where did they live? This resulted in our Monumental Gallery, featuring the stories of 30 women in STEM from across the country. She graduated from the University of Glasgow in 1919 with a BSc in zoology, botany and physiology, before working at the Marine Biological Station at Millport where she would stay for the rest of her life. Early in her career Marshall began investigating marine food chains, publishing a book with chemist Andrew Picken Orr “Biology of a Marine Copepod”, before becoming one of the first women Fellows of the Royal Society of Edinburgh. -
The Marine Fauna of Lundy Ecidnodermata
Rep. Lundy Fld Soc. 29 (1978) THE MARINE FAUNA OF LUNDY ECIDNODERMATA P. A. TYLER Department of Oceanography, University College, Swansea, S. Wales, U.K. INTRODUCTION The five classes of echinoderms are a conspicuous element of the fauna in truly marine areas. The British echinoderm fauna has been treated in detail by Mortensen (1927). In shelf sea areas they are usually found below LWN tide level with occasional species moving up into the littoral zone. Examples of the dominant extant groups are found in all types of substrates, the ophiuroids and the heart urchins being particularly important in the determination of soft substrate benthic communities (Thorson, 1947). SOURCES OF MATERIAL The collections made by divers during marine surveys of Lundy have pro duced a considerable record particularly of the conspicuous epifaunal asteroids, regular echinoids and holothurians. Observations of the less conspicuous in faunal ophiuroids and irregular echinoids have been obtained by divers and by benthic surveys using R.V. 'Ocean Crest'. THE LUNDY FAUNA- GENERAL CONSIDERATIONS To date, 24 species of echinoderm have been recorded around Lundy. Of these species only 8 were recorded by Harvey (1950, 1951) at Lundy. The most noteable exceptions to the fauna are Acrocnida brachiata and Spatangus purpureus, both of which have been found further up the Bristol Channel and may be supposed to be found round Lundy where a suitable substrate exists for these infaunal species. A number of species appear to be common all round the island. These include Asterias rubens, Marthasterias glacia/is, Luidia ciliaris, Echinus esculentus and Holothuria forskali. The very rare sea cucumber Lepto synapta decaria has been reported as occurring round Lundy (Hoare & Wilson, 1976). -

Review of the application and Environmental Statement submitted by Dawnfresh Farming Limited for the formation of fin-fish (Rainbow Trout) farm comprising 10 No. 80m circumference cages plus installation of feed-barge at Sailean Ruadh (Etive 6) Loch Etive, Argyll And Bute (planning ref 13/01379/MFF) Friends of Loch Etive Scottish Charitable Incorporated Organisation SC043986 c/o Muckairn Taynuilt Loch Etive PA35 1JA July 2013 Executive Summary i) Dawnfresh Farming Limited, the rainbow trout fish-farming company, is seeking planning permission to build a massive and permanent floating 10-cage fish-farm at Sailean Ruadh on Loch Etive, effectively doubling the tonnage of rainbow trout as compared to their five existing farms on Loch Etive. ii) While slightly smaller than the original 14-cage application withdrawn in July 2013 following a storm of local protest, the new applications retains most of the features of the earlier application that locals found so objectionable and would be a significant and unacceptable industrialisation of fish-farming activity on Loch Etive. iii) While Dawnfresh had tried to suggest that the initial 14-cage fish-farm application was part of some wider consolidation plan for its sites on Loch Etive as a whole, it has now dropped all pretences to be seeking to reduce its other operations on Loch Etive. Consolidation does not form part of the revised 10-cage application being considered by the Argyll and Bute Council. The proposed fish-farm will effectively double the total tonnage of farmed-fish on Loch Etive, following which Dawnfresh has let slip that it expects the other sites to ‘increase organically over time’, possibly by exploiting recently- granted Permitted Development Rights which allow the addition of extra cages and changes in feed- barges at existing sites without any further public consultation. -

Attention has been from time to time drawn to the traces of sea- terraces, more or less horizontal, at various levels. These traces occur in many countries, especially in those bounded by the sea. Dr Chambers, in his "Ancient Sea-Margins," published in the year 1848, gave a list of many in our own country, and he added a notice of some in other countries. So much interested was he in the subject, that not content with a special inspection of the coasts, and also of the valleys of the principal rivers in Scot land, he made a tour round and through many parts of Eng land, and even went to France to visit the valley of the Seine. Dr Chambers had previously been in Norway, and had been much interested in the terraces of the Altenfiord, described first by M. Bravais. He, however, did not confine himself to Europe, — he alluded also in his book to the existence of terraces in North America, as described by Lyell and others. The subject was one which had about the same time begun to engage my own attention ; — as may be seen from references in Dr Chambers' book, to information he obtained from me. -
