  • Karriere Eines Weltstars Oder Einfacher
1 of 6 C A T E R I N A V A L E N T E THE CAREER OF AN INTERNATIONAL STAR! or simply A WOMAN BORN FOR MUSIC! London's DAILY SKETCH (1970) wrote: "Whatever it takes to be a star, she's got it"! This laconic statement implicates the superlatives used by other journalists all over the world. Whether they call her "Caterina la grande" in Italy or "Caterina the great" in England and the U.S.A., she is the same everywhere: an undisputed queen of show business. Celebrated by the public, awarded the highest praise by her peers, revered by the greatest musicians and popular among other artists. She is fortunate to have a blessed voice, unique musicality, and possesses a particularly distinctive feel for rhythm. But that's not all. This graceful woman worked on herself continuously and unwaveringly with incredible tenacity and an iron will. Whether she was singing, dancing, or playing solo guitar, she did so with total focus. Her abilities, combined with her charismatic personality gave this artist a glittering career and led to her becoming a well-established celebrity in the world of entertainment. To give a complete description of her career would take too long, so here is just a short summary of the most important stages of her success. 1931 Born on January 14 in Paris France. Her mother, Maria Valente, is a world-famous musical clown and her father, Giuseppe, is a talented musician. Her parents are Italian; Caterina therefore acquires Italian nationality. 1936 First appearance at the Friedrichsbau in Stuttgart within the family group.

  • Stu Davis: Canada's Cowboy Troubadour
Stu Davis: Canada’s Cowboy Troubadour by Brock Silversides Stu Davis was an immense presence on Western Canada’s country music scene from the late 1930s to the late 1960s. His is a name no longer well-known, even though he was continually on the radio and television waves regionally and nationally for more than a quarter century. In addition, he released twenty-three singles, twenty albums, and published four folios of songs: a multi-layered creative output unmatched by most of his contemporaries. Born David Stewart, he was the youngest son of Alex Stewart and Magdelena Fawns. They had emigrated from Scotland to Saskatchewan in 1909, homesteading on Twp. 13, Range 15, west of the 2nd Meridian.1 This was in the middle of the great Regina Plain, near the town of Francis. In 1920 they moved into Regina where Alex found employment as a gardener, then as a teamster for the City of Regina Parks Board. The family moved frequently: city directories show them at 1400 Rae Street (1921), 1367 Lorne North (1923), 929 Edgar Street (1924-1929), 1202 Elliott Street (1933-1936), 1265 Scarth Street for the remainder of the 1930s, and 1178 Cameron Street through the war years.2 Through these moves the family kept a hand in farming, with a small farm 12 kilometres northwest of the city near the hamlet of Boggy Creek, a stone’s throw from the scenic Qu’Appelle Valley.

PERFORMING ARTS • FILM HISTORICAL DICTIONARY OF Historical Dictionaries of Literature and the Arts, No. 26 VARNER When early filmgoers watched The Great Train Robbery in 1903, many shrieked in terror at the very last clip, when one of the outlaws turned toward the camera and seemingly fired a gun directly at the audience. The puff of WESTERNS smoke was sudden and hand-colored, and it looked real. Today we can look back at that primitive movie and see all the elements of what would evolve HISTORICAL into the Western genre. Perhaps the Western’s early origins—The Great Train DICTIONARY OF Robbery was the first narrative, commercial movie—or its formulaic yet enter- WESTERNS in Cinema taining structure has made the genre so popular. And with the recent success of films like 3:10 to Yuma and The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, the Western appears to be in no danger of disappearing. The story of the Western is told in this Historical Dictionary of Westerns in Cinema through a chronology, a bibliography, an introductory essay, and hundreds of cross-referenced dictionary entries on cinematographers; com- posers; producers; films like Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, Dances with Wolves, The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly, High Noon, The Magnificent Seven, The Searchers, Tombstone, and Unforgiven; actors such as Gene Autry, in Cinema Cinema Kirk Douglas, Clint Eastwood, Henry Fonda, Jimmy Stewart, and John Wayne; and directors like John Ford and Sergio Leone. Italienische Original-Kompositionen (u.a. vom traditionellen San-Remo-Festival), italienische Ver- sionen großer internationaler Pop-Hits, zeitlose Evergreens: Songs von Komponisten wie Cole Porter, Hoagy Carmichael und Victor Young fügen sich – italienisch gesungen – lückenlos in das mächtige Gesamtangebot ein: AFine Romance, When I Fall In Love, Get Out Of Town, Stardust, Blue Moon, I‘m In The Mood For Love und viele andere.

Legato in Times of Staccato Playlist 5 - Monday, May 4th, 2020 Curated by Music Director, Fouad Fakhouri Khachaturian: Piano Concerto in D-flat major An underrated work by Armenian composer Aram Khachaturian. This great concerto is not performed as often as it should. The recording features Jean-Yves Thibaudet, who is currently “one of the best pianist in the world” Saint-Saëns: Symphony No.3 + [Encore] A live performance by the Orchestre symphonique de Montréal conducted by Charles Dutoit. Written at the peak of his career Camille Saint-Saens stated the following about the work: “I gave everything to it I was able to give. What I have here accomplished, I will never achieve again”. The encore following the symphony is a wonderful piece by the great Romanian composer George Enescu: Romanian Rhapsody No. 1. Rimsky-Korsakov: Scheherazade I love the music of Rimsky Korsakov. He is considered one of the best orchestrators of all time. Scheherazade was composed in 1888 and is based on One Thousand and One Nights (or Arabian Nights). Piazzolla: Libertango Piazzolla was an Argentinean composer and virtuoso Bandoneon player. He Studied in France with Nadia Boulanger who encouraged him (like she did numerous other composers she taught – including Copland) to focus on writing music that directly relates to his own culture. His work revolutionized the traditional tango and ushered a new style now recognized as the “Nuevo tango” which incorporates elements of jazz and classical music. This particular arrangement of the work was chosen by WFSO violinist, Ludmilla Duston. Legato in Times of Staccato Shostakovich: Symphony No.
