CATALOGUE WELCOME to NAXOS JAZZ LEGENDS and NAXOS NOSTALGIA, Twin Compendiums Presenting the Best in Vintage Popular Music
NAXOS JAZZ LEGENDS/NOSTALGIA CATALOGUE WELCOME TO NAXOS JAZZ LEGENDS AND NAXOS NOSTALGIA, twin compendiums presenting the best in vintage popular music. Following in the footsteps of Naxos Historical, with its wealth of classical recordings from the golden age of the gramophone, these two upbeat labels put the stars of yesteryear back into the spotlight through glorious new restorations that capture their true essence as never before. NAXOS JAZZ LEGENDS documents the most vibrant period in the history of jazz, from the swinging ’20s to the innovative ’40s. Boasting a formidable roster of artists who forever changed the face of jazz, Naxos Jazz Legends focuses on the true giants of jazz, from the fathers of the early styles, to the queens of jazz vocalists and the great innovators of the 1940s and 1950s. NAXOS NOSTALGIA presents a similarly stunning line-up of all-time greats from the golden age of popular entertainment. Featuring the biggest stars of stage and screen performing some of the best- loved hits from the first half of the 20th century, this is a real treasure trove for fans to explore. RESTORING THE STARS OF THE PAST TO THEIR FORMER GLORY, by transforming old 78 rpm recordings into bright-sounding CDs, is an intricate task performed for Naxos by leading specialist producer-engineers using state-of-the-art-equipment. With vast personal collections at their disposal, as well as access to private and institutional libraries, they ensure that only the best available resources are used. The records are first cleaned using special equipment, carefully centred on a heavy-duty turntable, checked for the correct playing speed (often not 78 rpm), then played with the appropriate size of precision stylus. -

Karriere Eines Weltstars Oder Einfacher
1 of 6 C A T E R I N A V A L E N T E THE CAREER OF AN INTERNATIONAL STAR! or simply A WOMAN BORN FOR MUSIC! London's DAILY SKETCH (1970) wrote: "Whatever it takes to be a star, she's got it"! This laconic statement implicates the superlatives used by other journalists all over the world. Whether they call her "Caterina la grande" in Italy or "Caterina the great" in England and the U.S.A., she is the same everywhere: an undisputed queen of show business. Celebrated by the public, awarded the highest praise by her peers, revered by the greatest musicians and popular among other artists. She is fortunate to have a blessed voice, unique musicality, and possesses a particularly distinctive feel for rhythm. But that's not all. This graceful woman worked on herself continuously and unwaveringly with incredible tenacity and an iron will. Whether she was singing, dancing, or playing solo guitar, she did so with total focus. Her abilities, combined with her charismatic personality gave this artist a glittering career and led to her becoming a well-established celebrity in the world of entertainment. To give a complete description of her career would take too long, so here is just a short summary of the most important stages of her success. 1931 Born on January 14 in Paris France. Her mother, Maria Valente, is a world-famous musical clown and her father, Giuseppe, is a talented musician. Her parents are Italian; Caterina therefore acquires Italian nationality. 1936 First appearance at the Friedrichsbau in Stuttgart within the family group. -

She was born into a very musical churchgoing family, and this gave her the chance to discover and begin developing her stunning abilities at an early age. She began piano lessons while in elementary school, and played and sang in the church choir, as well as during church services. During her teens she began seriously performing and attending nightclubs, and while she did eventually attend an arts-based high school, she dropped out before graduating to focus on her burgeoning musical exploits. Encouraged by a friend or friends to give the famous career-making Amateur Night at the Apollo Theater in Harlem, New York City a try (the exact date and circumstances are debated), she sang Body and Soul and won. This led to her coming to the attention of Earl Hines, whose band at the time was a revolutionary group at the forefront of the bebop movement. -

BILL HOLMAN NEA Jazz Master (2010) Interviewee: Bill Holman (May 21, 1927 - ) Interviewer: Anthony Brown with recording engineer Ken Kimery Date: February 18-19, 2010 Repository: Archives Center, National Museum of American History, Smithsonian Institution Description: Transcript, 84 pp. Brown: Today is Thursday, February 18th, 2010, and this is the Smithsonian Institution National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Masters Oral History Program interview with Bill Holman in his house in Los Angeles, California. Good afternoon, Bill, accompanied by his wife, Nancy. This interview is conducted by Anthony Brown with Ken Kimery. Bill, if we could start with you stating your full name, your birth date, and where you were born. Holman: My full name is Willis Leonard Holman. I was born in Olive, California, May 21st, 1927. Brown: Where exactly is Olive, California? Holman: Strange you should ask [laughs]. Now it‟s a part of Orange, California. You may not know where Orange is either. Orange is near Santa Ana, which is the county seat of Orange County, California. I don‟t know if Olive was a part of Orange at the time, or whether Orange has just grown up around it, or what. But it‟s located in the city of Orange, although I think it‟s a separate municipality. Anyway, it was a really small town. I always say there was a couple of orange-packing houses and a railroad spur. Probably more than that, but not a whole lot. -

Jazz History, November 2015
JAZZ HISTORY ONLINE NOVEMBER, 2015! Luciana Souza: Passion and Versatility by Thomas Cunniffe Like Ray Charles, Sarah Vaughan, and Bobby McFerrin, Luciana Souza retains her unique identity regardless of the type of music she sings. Her range is staggering. She is a remarkable improviser with recordings that pair her with the most progressive musicians in jazz today. She is also an exquisite interpreter of pop songs, both classic and contemporary, offering definitive renditions of songs as varied as “Never Let Me Go”, “Waters of March” and “The Very Thought of You”. Her three albums of “Brazilian Duos” introduced great songs from Souza’s native land to American audiences by setting her expressive voice against solo guitar accompaniments by Romero Lubambo, Marco Pereira, Toninho Horta, Guilherme Monteiro, Swami, Jr. and her father, Walter Santos. She is also one of the premier interpreters of the music of the contemporary classical composer Osvaldo Golijov, performing his dramatic and vocally challenging music with orchestras and choruses around the world. She has written her own compositions with original words and music, and has also set the poetry of Elizabeth Bishop, Pablo Neruda and Leonard Cohen to her own melodies. JAZZ HISTORY ONLINE NOVEMBER, 2015! However, there is more to Souza’s art than just the mastery of diverse styles. Souza brings deep passion to everything she sings. She picks her repertoire carefully, and is meticulous about finding the right tempo and setting to properly transmit a song’s message. Her recording of “All of Me” sounds like a total act of romantic submission, and her setting of Neruda’s “Tonight I Can Write” conveys a feeling of loneliness and release. -

Discography Updates (Updated May, 2021)
Discography Updates (Updated May, 2021) I’ve been amassing corrections and additions since the August, 2012 publication of Pepper Adams’ Joy Road. Its 2013 paperback edition gave me a chance to overhaul the Index. For reasons I explain below, it’s vastly superior to the index in the hardcover version. But those are static changes, fixed in the manuscript. Discographers know that their databases are instantly obsolete upon publication. New commercial recordings continue to get released or reissued. Audience recordings are continually discovered. Errors are unmasked, and missing information slowly but surely gets supplanted by new data. That’s why discographies in book form are now a rarity. With the steady stream of updates that are needed to keep a discography current, the internet is the ideal medium. When Joy Road goes out of print, in fact, my entire book with updates will be posted right here. At that time, many of these changes will be combined with their corresponding entries. Until then, to give you the fullest sense of each session, please consult the original entry as well as information here. Please send any additions, corrections or comments to http://gc-pepperadamsblog.blogspot.com/, despite the content of the current blog post. Addition: OLIVER SHEARER 470900 September 1947, unissued demo recording, United Sound Studios, Detroit: Willie Wells tp; Pepper Adams cl; Tommy Flanagan p; Oliver Shearer vib, voc*; Charles Burrell b; Patt Popp voc.^ a Shearer Madness (Ow!) b Medley: Stairway to the Stars A Hundred Years from Today*^ Correction: 490900A Fall 1949 The recording was made in late 1949 because it was reviewed in the December 17, 1949 issue of Billboard.
