CATALOGUE WELCOME to NAXOS JAZZ LEGENDS and NAXOS NOSTALGIA, Twin Compendiums Presenting the Best in Vintage Popular Music
NAXOS JAZZ LEGENDS/NOSTALGIA CATALOGUE WELCOME TO NAXOS JAZZ LEGENDS AND NAXOS NOSTALGIA, twin compendiums presenting the best in vintage popular music. Following in the footsteps of Naxos Historical, with its wealth of classical recordings from the golden age of the gramophone, these two upbeat labels put the stars of yesteryear back into the spotlight through glorious new restorations that capture their true essence as never before. NAXOS JAZZ LEGENDS documents the most vibrant period in the history of jazz, from the swinging ’20s to the innovative ’40s. Boasting a formidable roster of artists who forever changed the face of jazz, Naxos Jazz Legends focuses on the true giants of jazz, from the fathers of the early styles, to the queens of jazz vocalists and the great innovators of the 1940s and 1950s. NAXOS NOSTALGIA presents a similarly stunning line-up of all-time greats from the golden age of popular entertainment. Featuring the biggest stars of stage and screen performing some of the best- loved hits from the first half of the 20th century, this is a real treasure trove for fans to explore. RESTORING THE STARS OF THE PAST TO THEIR FORMER GLORY, by transforming old 78 rpm recordings into bright-sounding CDs, is an intricate task performed for Naxos by leading specialist producer-engineers using state-of-the-art-equipment. With vast personal collections at their disposal, as well as access to private and institutional libraries, they ensure that only the best available resources are used. The records are first cleaned using special equipment, carefully centred on a heavy-duty turntable, checked for the correct playing speed (often not 78 rpm), then played with the appropriate size of precision stylus. -

PO Box 1236 Saratoga Springs NY 12866 USA sarah vaughan series the man i love (1963) Sarah Vaughan Biography: Sarah Lois Vaughan was born on March 27, 1924, in Newark New Jersey. She was born into a very musical churchgoing family, and this gave her the chance to discover and begin developing her stunning abilities at an early age. She began piano lessons while in elementary school, and played and sang in the church choir, as well as during church services. During her teens she began seriously performing and attending nightclubs, and while she did eventually attend an arts-based high school, she dropped out before graduating to focus on her burgeoning musical exploits. Encouraged by a friend or friends to give the famous career-making Amateur Night at the Apollo Theater in Harlem, New York City a try (the exact date and circumstances are debated), she sang Body and Soul and won. This led to her coming to the attention of Earl Hines, whose band at the time was a revolutionary group at the forefront of the bebop movement. -

Luciana Souza sings, if not speaks, in tongues We chat with the Brazilian vocal great, a 6-time Grammy-nominee, who performs in La Jolla Thursday with her all-star band By George Varga March 12, 2016 Six tracks on Luciana Souza’s Grammy-nominated 2015 album “Speaking in Tongues” are wordless, each an attempt to create a rich and varied soundscape. Kim Fox 1 0 What’s in a word? This question has long challenged and fascinated singers and songwriters as they strive to articulate both simple and complex thoughts and emotions with maximum impact. But what if there are no words to sing? How do performers capture and convey the feelings and stories they want to tell, using their voice, but no lyrics? That was the challenge internationally acclaimed Brazilian singer Luciana Souza faced — or, rather, embraced — when she made her striking 2015 album, “Speaking in Tongues.” It is the 13th solo release by Souza, whose past collaborators range from Herbie Hancock and Paul Simon to David Bowie saxophonist Donny McCaslin and the Atlanta Symphony Chorus and Orchestra. Jazz at the Athenaeum presents Luciana Souza: Speaking in Tongues Six of the nine selections on “Tongues” feature Souza singing, wordlessly, with consistently stunning results. Two of the other tracks, “No One to Follow” and “Split,” are poems by Leonard Cohen set to music, while the Souza-penned “Straw Hat” was inspired by her father, a noted Brazilian singer and composer. Drawing from jazz, samba, funk, Afro-pop and more, the album delights in any language, with or without words. -

Boston Globe, March, 2006
The Boston Globe March 17, 2006 She breaks down musical boundaries Luciana Souza sings with no fear, winning respect of her peers Three of Luciana Souza's four most recent CDs have earned her Grammy nominations, including ''Duos II," which this year was edged out for best jazz vocal album by Dianne Reeves and the ''Good Night, and Good Luck" soundtrack. But Souza's not a big star yet by any means. What popularity she has remains largely confined to the jazz cognoscenti and her fellow musicians, the latter of whom seem uniformly to adore her. High on the list of things they admire about Souza is her willingness to take risks. Consider the rapid-fire unison lines she sings with guitarist Romero Lubambo on ''Duos II," the album they'll likely draw heavily from in their Bank of America Celebrity Series double bill with Joe Lovano tomorrow night at Sanders Theatre. Souza, 39, and Lubambo have been playing together for a decade. But while they've built up a large repertoire of material over the years, they rarely have occasion to practice together beyond sound checks. It can sometimes come back to haunt them in concert, Souza admits. ''We have a way of doing them that hopefully comes out clean," Souza explains, laughing. ''Some nights we get into trouble, but even that is exciting for the audience. You try your best, and sometimes it succeeds. Sometimes we fail miserably, and we go back and go, 'Here we go one more time,' and just try again in front of people. -

Singer Luciana Souza Interprets Chet Baker and Further Explores Her Brazilian Roots on Two New Albums
Singer Luciana Souza interprets Chet Baker and further explores her Brazilian roots on two new albums. By Ted Panken • Photos by Bob Wolfenson 46 fall 2012 jazziz “I have a little story to tell you,” says vocalist Luciana Souza, Music from 1984 to 1988. “I became smitten by him — not as a recalling the third and final studio session that generated The man, but by his voice and music,” she recalls. “I dug his mood, Book of Chet (Sunnyside), a CD released in August comprising his sense of pitch, where he places the note in his voice and the 10 renderings of American Songbook jewels upon which Chet fact that he dealt with vibrato differently than other American Baker placed his distinctive stamp. “Right after lunch I decided singers — a straight tone, with a fast vibrato and a slower to sing ‘I Get Along Without You Very Well.’ We had rehearsed it, one.” During the early ’90s, while pursuing graduate studies at so I thought it would come out as easy as everything else. I was New England Conservatory, she augmented her knowledge by on mic, everybody wearing headphones, tuned, ready to go. They transcribing scat solos from several Baker recordings. All the started playing, and I froze. It felt so slow, and I didn’t know how to while, Souza adds, she was well aware of Baker’s influence on fit the words into the meter. I had a moment of feeling like death.” the way bossa nova trailblazer João Gilberto conceptualized the Souza’s producer, Larry Klein, her husband since 2006 and the projection of saudade, the famously untranslatable Portuguese father of their 3-year-old son, made a quick suggestion. -

Obviously, these items would be a good gift idea for any occasion year-round, as well as a gift for yourself! We do not include many, if any at all, single CDs in the guide. Most everything contained will be multiple CD sets, DVDs, CD/DVD sets, books and the like. Of course, you can always look though our back issues to see what came out in 2017 (and prior years), but none of us would want to attempt to decide which CDs would be a fitting ad- dition to this guide. As with 2016, the year 2017 was a bit on the lean side as far as reviews go of box sets, books and DVDs - it appears tht the days of mass quantities of boxed sets are over - but we do have some to check out. These are in no particular order in terms of importance or release dates. -
