Throughout the painters art in the Tang Dynasty, the magnificent and positive spirits are revealed everywhere. It is one of the most brilliant pearls in the history of Chinese art, and it has written generous colour for the splendor of world culture. The creative environment of the Tang Dynasty painters was relatively free and there were many ways of communication. Therefore, many famous art and works were spread at that time, which had a great impact on the people at that time and in later generations. This paper mainly studies the spread and effect of the painters art in the Tang Dynasty. 1. Introduction The Tang Dynasty has achieved unprecedented development in economic, political, and cultural aspects, and which constituted the prosperous Tang Dynasty that the Chinese nation is proud of. The art of painting also showed an unprecedented prosperity in the Tang Dynasty. The painters art of the Tang Dynasty was supported by the famous masters of the Tang Dynasty. Because of the powerful national power and prosperous economy, the scale and artistic reached the level that the former generation could not match. -

Néanmoins, il m’a paru utile pour la poursuite de mon travail de le publier en l’état pour permettre à un lectorat intéressé par le sujet et/ou aux universitaires d’en prendre connaissance, devant la difficulté d’avoir un retour sur mon travail, notamment chez les sinologues. Ma Junwu, premier traducteur de Darwin Ingénieur, éducateur, poète et homme politique, Ma Junwu (son vrai prénom est Daoning) est le premier et le plus influent traducteur de Darwin en chinois de la première moitié du XXe siècle. Par l’impact incontestable et durable de ses traductions d’œuvres occidentales (à part Darwin, il faut citer notamment Rousseau, J. S. Mill, Spencer et Haeckel), c’est certainement la personnalité la plus typique de la philosophie évolutionniste chinoise, bien que son rôle soit encore sous-estimé par les commentateurs contemporains dans ce domaine1. Il est né le 17 juillet 1881 à Gongcheng, aujourd’hui un district de la région de Guilin (province de Guangxi), d’un parent fonctionnaire2. Durant son enfance, Ma suit une éducation classique privée mais dès l’âge de 16 ans (en 1897), il s’intéresse au programme de réformes constitutionnelles de Kang Youwei. Il suit de près les événements des 100 jours de réformes, l’année suivante. En 1899, il entre à l’école Tiyong (Tiyong daxue) à Guilin, l’une des nouvelles écoles qui s’ouvrent au « savoir occidental ». Dans le cadre de ses études secondaires, Ma y étudie notamment les mathématiques (sa spécialité de l’époque), l’anglais et l’histoire3. -

I believed her then and since, I have enjoyed pursuing that goal. She taught me the basics of seeing lines in nature; lines formed on the contact of shadow and light, as well as organic shapes. We also practiced blind contour drawing1. I took this exercise very seriously then, and I have reflected upon these moments of observation as I write this paper. -

CC BY 4.0 License. 1 Abstract: Although the parameters of hydrological models are usually regarded as 2 constant, temporal variations can occur in a changing environment. Thus, effectively 3 estimating time-varying parameters becomes a significant challenge. Following a 4 survey of existing estimation methodologies, this paper describes a new method that 5 combines (1) the basic concept of split-sample calibration (SSC), whereby parameters 6 are assumed to be stable for one sub-period, and (2) the parameter continuity 7 assumption, i.e., the differences between parameters in consecutive time steps are small. 8 Dynamic programming is then used to determine the optimal parameter trajectory by 9 considering two objective functions: maximization of simulation accuracy and 10 maximization of parameter continuity. The efficiency of the proposed method is 11 evaluated by two synthetic experiments, one with a simple two-parameter monthly 12 model and the second using a more complex 15-parameter daily model. -

Chinese painter and calligrapher. He is designated one of the Four Masters of the Yuan (1279–1368), with HUANG GONGWANG, WU ZHEN and WANG MENG. Ni Zan’s family were of Xixia (Tangut) origin. His tenth-generation ancestor Shi came to China as Xixia ambassador in 1034–7 at the time of Emperor Renzong (reg 1023–63), and the family settled in Duliang (modern Anhui Province). In 1127–30, under Emperor Gaozong (reg 1127–62), Ni Zan’s fifth-generation ancestor Yi moved south with the Southern Song (1127–1279), settling at Zhituo village in Wuxi, modern Jiangsu Province, where the Ni family prospered. Ni Zan and his elder brother Ying were the sons of a concubine, Yan. Their father died when they were young, and they were raised by their eldest half-brother, Ni Zhaogui (1279–1328). Ying was mentally incompetent, and after Zhaogui’s death Ni Zan assumed responsibility for the family estate, a role ill-suited to his natural inclinations. He led a privileged and secluded home life for 20 or more years; in the mid-1340s he spent most of his time among rare books, antique paintings, calligraphy and flowers in his favourite studio, the Qingbi ge (‘Pure and secluded pavilion’). Ni Zan was an ardent admirer of the great Northern Song (1127–1279) artist and connoisseur, MI FU, and shared two of his idiosyncrasies: fastidiousness and generosity. -

A Comparison of the Paintings of Bada Shanren and Shitao of the Qing Dynasty Liu HONG, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University 1. The respective backgrounds of Bada Shanren and Shitao Bada Shanren, the last and best known of many names used by Zhuda (1626- 1705/6), was a member of the royal household in the Ming Dynasty before he became a monk in 1644. Shitao was also a Ming prince who had grand stature as a painter. Fifteen years or so younger than Bada Shanren, Shitao was born probably between 1638 and 1641 and died possibly before 1720 (Loehr, 1980, p. 299 and 302). Both Bada Shanren and Shitao were forced to be monks and lived poor lives after the extinction of the Ming Dynasty. Due to their misfortunes, they both suffered great pains during their remaining years, which had a great influence on their paintings. Although Bada Shanren was famous when he was alive, his only artist friend was Shitao (Cai & Xu, 1998). Despite their common backgrounds and mutual understanding, their paintings display a considerable amount of differences because of their divergent characteristics and attitudes toward life. In this essay, I will discuss the similarities and differences between their artwork through some painting examples, and give my own interpretations.
