TERESA’S COLLEGE ERNAKULAM, KOCHI – 682011 Re-Accredited by NAAC at „A‟ Level Affiliated to Mahatma Gandhi University Website: www.teresas.ac.in E-mail: [email protected] INTRODUCTION St. Teresa‟s college Ernakulum, Kerala, committed to the cause of Higher Learning of Women and their empowerment was founded by the Educational Agency of Carmelite Sisters of St. Teresa, following the footsteps of its farsighted, visionary leader and Foundress, Mother Teresa of St. Rose of Lima in the year 1925. Accredited by the NAAC at the Five Star Level in1999 and Reaccredited with A level in 2006, the college has the privilege and the unique honour of “College with Potential for Excellence” status bestowed by the U.G.C in 2010. Today the Institution has cross - border and trans-border educational imperatives such as tie-ups with London Metropolitan University, U.K, Deakin University, Australia and East China Normal University, in Collaborative Research and Educational Programmes. The Faculty makes optimum use of the Information and Communication Technology [ICT] and the College has made a conscious effort to invest in the hardware and train the faculty suitably in a high level advancement in documentation and data processing. Vision and Mission VISION St. Teresa‟s College, Ernakulam, envisions a life oriented education that empowers the students through a humanizing and liberating process, to be agents of transformation and developments at different levels of life. Enabled and empowered, they respond proactively to the concerns and conflicts inherent in today‟s reality, especially those of women and persons who are unable to exercise their freedom to be human, and work for the integrity of creation. The thrust is in the light of a „civilization of love’ – the kingdom of God, as envisaged and promoted by the Foundress, Mother Teresa of St. Rose of Lima. MISSION We prepare the students: To promote a College/Community/Society/Nation where spiritual, moral, and genuine human values are lived and witnessed to. To contribute to the transformation of society through an openness to reality and living the challenges of being socially conscious and socially responsible. To synergize women and those prevented from exercising their right to be human, through enlightening them regarding their basic human rights and helping them to achieve the same. 1 St.Teresa’s College, AQAR 2010-’11 To promote inter-cultural and inter-religious harmony and communion through promoting genuine dialogue, whereby we work together for the common good of the human family. To facilitate leadership among the students enabling them to be genuinely other centered, proactively enthusiastic, and spiritually and socially motivated towards personal, group and social liberation. To provide quality, integral education which is life, vocation and career oriented, we promote a climate for human and academic excellence with openness to learning, research and development of professional skills so that work towards the empowerment of persons and transformation of the society will be fostered. To work towards the integrity of creation through being conscious of and alert to the state of devastation and destruction of creation and the serious perils the humankind is plunged into, we promote programmes / movements that foster inter-connectedness, kinship and eco-justice. To recognize the advantage of using modern tools and technological innovations for teaching-learning and governance and its visible impact and motivating factor in empowering a large number of students, we promote programmes and workshops that make the students acquire the necessary skills and practice, and transferring it to others in the society. Section A: Plan of action chalked in the beginning of the year towards quality enhancement. At the beginning of the academic year, a meeting of the IQAC was held and a plan of action for the year was chalked out keeping in mind the following objectives: Fostering Global Competencies and enhancing Academic Excellence Addressing the environmental and societal issues Creating a balanced personality in students Promoting the use of technology Infrastructure augmentation Fostering Global Competencies and enhancing academic excellence In order to foster global competence and academic excellence among the students, the following plans were chalked out: Special Coaching and Remedial classes for academically weak students To give special coaching for students appearing for DELF examinations Initiate Master level Research Programme for the students by French Government at Alliance Francaise 2 St.Teresa’s College, AQAR 2010-’11 To conduct econometrics National workshop Visits to research institutions To start UGC – CSIR, NET, JRF coaching center in Life science in the Department of Botany To start UGC – CSIR, NET, JRF coaching center in Social Science in the Department of Economics To submit proposal under UGC innovative scheme for a regular degree course under Women‟ study center To start UGC sponsored Add on course in Plant Resource Development and Management in the Department of Botany Addressing the environmental and societal issues To conduct seminars, workshops and awareness programmes in order to sensitize students about the global environmental problems Strengthen the activities of Teresian Rural Outreach Programmes (TROP) Creating balanced personality in students To provide orientation programmes and value education classes to the students to improve their self-awareness, motivation and mental hygiene. Conduct of AAPHERD Test and follow up procedures to improve health and physical fitness of the students, by the Physical Education Department To set up a Diet Clinic in the campus Promoting the Use of Technology Purchase more licensed computer soft wares Setting up of ICT enabled class rooms Internet facility to be made available in all Departments and to establish networking between Science and Arts block. Launching of a new website www.kalalayam.com (Govt. of Kerala) General informatics training programmes for teachers and students Infrastructure augmentation Refurbishment of the central library. Renovation of Chemistry, Zoology, Physics and Botany Laboratories. Purchase of more computers for all Depts. Enhance learning facilities for the students, in keeping with the changed curriculum- addition of laboratory equipments and instruments to the science laboratories. 3 St.Teresa’s College, AQAR 2010-’11 Complete Campus Automation Programme- all aspects of teaching and learning to be automated. Online AQAR preparation to be initiated. Section B: Activities reflecting the Goals of the Institution: The institution wishes to reflect its goals and objectives in all the curricular, co- curricular and extracurricular programmes offered. The academic programs which the institution offers are well in tune with the institution‟s goals and objectives. It makes a judiciary selection of curricular and co- curricular activities which are designed to foster the overall development of students and to fulfill the mission and vision of the college. All activities are focused on allowing the students to grasp, imbibe, nourish and disseminate the vision of the institution. Focusing on these high ideals, the following activities were organized: The Counseling Cell‟s activities have been made effective by the addition of Smt. Shirley Tharakan – professional counsellor. The students and parents were given the opportunity to meet the counselor every Wednesday. The activities of the various clubs and cells contributed to the holistic development of the personality of the students. A seminar on Elimination of Violence against Women in Socio-Cultural and Legal Perspective focusing on uprooting of Domestic Violence was organized by the Women‟s Cell of the college in association with People‟s Council for Social Justice and Kerala State Legal Services Authority (KELSA) on 22 September 2010. An orientation and renewal programme was conducted for II and III years in mid- June and for I year students by the end of June. A 2-day life guidance seminar was organized for the final year students on January 17 and 18, 2010. The college continues to collaborate with NGO‟s – Nanma for TROP activities. The blood donation camps, medical camps, AIDS awareness campaigns, street play to bring about awareness of AIDS and its prevention, Caring for the Elderly campaign, Anti-Tobacco campaign, Road Safety campaign are some of activities of NSS and NCC that educated students about their societal responsibilities and help them contribute significantly to the community. The Department of Chemistry inaugurated the International Year of Chemistry celebrations on March 11, 2011. A seminar was organized on the same day. The Dept. of Chemistry released Rasathantra the news letter of the department in February 2011. 4 St.Teresa’s College, AQAR 2010-’11 The Dept. of Zoology organized an International seminar on December 8, 2010 in connection with its Golden Jubilee celebrations. The Dept. of Zoology organized a training programme for students of the department on the topic Aquarium Maintenance and Breeding of Ornamental Fishes in September 2010. The science teachers of the college were successful in organizing and hosting the First Kerala Women’s Science Congress in association with Shakthi at the college from 10- 12 August 2010.     KERALA BAMBOO FEST 2012 Post Show Report The Department of Industries & Commerce, Government of Kerala in association with Kerala State Bamboo Mission (KSBM) and Kerala Bureau of Industrial Promotion (K-BIP) organized the 9th edition of ‘Kerala Bamboo Fest’ (Kerala Bamboo Fest 2012) at Jawaharlal Nehru International Stadium Ground, Kaloor, Kochi from December 6 to 9, 2012. The Fest was inaugurated by Shri. P.K Kunhalikutty, Hon’ble Minister (Industries & IT) in the meeting presided over by Shri. Hibi Eden, Member of Legislative Assembly (Ernakulam) on December 7, 2012. The new office complex Ernakulam consists of a (Grade-I) Branch Office of E.S.I. Corporation, Medical Referee’s Office and Guest House. About 3382 employers and nearly 1.25 lakh Insured Persons are covered with this office. This Office disburses 50-60 payments per day amounting to Rs. 40 lakhs per month. One E.S.I. Hospital and four ESI Dispensaries come under the service area of this Branch Office. This state-of-art modern office sprawls over 11,180 sq.ft in three floors. This new office is designed with all the architectural attributes and facilities that a modern office should be equipped with – a well-laid conference hall, an expansive waiting area, a Medical Referee’s Room, five guest rooms.
