Nestling on an 11.98 acre pristine greenery on the shores of the Vembanad Lake the College is astoundingly roomy with an area of 1,50,000 sq.ft, and can provide comfortable accommodation to 2500 students. The grand structure, a unique blend of the old and the new with its exuberantly green surroundings has continued to sparkle on the crown on the Queen of the Arabian Sea. This edifice of learning and holistic enrichment has caught the attention of the state and the nation, and has come to global notice as well. Thevara College, as our College is fondly known, after remaining a male bastion for over 25 years turned co-ed in 1975. Excelling in academic and co-curricular fields, Sacred Heart College has won abundant recognition all these years. The Government of Kerala conferred on it the coveted R. Sankar Award for the best First Grade College for the academic years 1996 - 97 and 1998 - 99. In 2001- 02 the College was selected as one of the centres for the College Science Improvement Programme (COSIP) by the UGC. In 2002 - 03 the UGC honored our College with a special grant in recognition of its 50 years service to the nation. In the very next year the Government of Kerala declared the institution eligible for the ‘Special Grade Principal’, with retrospective effect from 1-1-1986. And to top it all the UGC recognized Sacred Heart College as College with Potential for Excellence in the year 2004 - 05, thus setting it on a new trajectory of growth. All these recognitions came, of course, after the Five Star accreditation by the NAAC, which gave us the drive and the energy and the resolve to excel. Now in the 62nd year of its growth, the College possesses the potential and the passion to grow into a centre of excellence. The College is affiliated to the Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam. With 2197 students from backward, urban, and semi-urban backgrounds on its rolls, and with a sprinkling of non-Malayalee students in most classes, we have a cosmopolitan campus. Six of our Departments are recognized research centres for PhD under the MG University. The College has on its faculty 76 regular and 41 guest lecturers; 22 of the regular faculty are PhDs and 40 have M Phil. 9 teachers are in the process of Sacred Heart College, Thevara, Kochi 682013 N A A C Re- Accreditation Report 2007 2 completing their PhD and three teachers are on FIP. The liberal ambience of the College provides the right climate for all round growth. Some of the faculty members of our bio-sciences Departments enjoy international reputation in Arachnology and Environmental studies. Globally alert, the Departments of Economics and Commerce have of late sent a letter of suggestions to the World Trade Organization (WTO) Secretary General for improving the WTO regulations.

    Veterinary World, Vol.1(1):5-6 RESEARCH Economic Impact of FMD in Chazhoor Panchayath Litty Mathew and Deepa G Menon District Veterinary Centre, Thrissur, Kerala State Abstract Foot and mouth disease is probably the most important livestock disease in the world in terms of economic impact. Of all the vesicular diseases prevalent in India, FMD remains the greatest and most feared scourge. In Chazhoor Panchayat, 62 animals were affected with FMD, out of which 28 were vaccinated. The economic loss was calculated taking into consideration milk loss, losses due to abortion and treatment charges. The total economic loss was calculated as Rs 313900/- out of which loss in milk production accounted for 80.68%. Cost of milk was calculated at the rate of Rs. 12/ litre, to assess the economic loss. Treatment cost includes vehicle charges and cost of medicine. An average loss of 8 hrs/ day/ animal was calculated. Vaccination cost of Rs. 5/ animal was also considered. C Teaching Faculty, Department of Rural Banking and Finance Management, College of Co-Operation, Banking and Management, Kerala Agricultural University, Kerala, India ABSTRACT The present study examined the impact of the financial literacy programme on farmers in Pullu village. The study wasmainly based on primary data collected through a semi-structured interview schedule from 60 farmer respondents selected randomly. Data were analyzed with the help of percentages and paired t-test. The study revealed that the FLP in Pullu Village has significant impact on the awareness and usage level of savings bank account by farmers. The Programme could also improve the awareness level of respondents about ATM. But FLP could not bring changes in the usage level of ATM since there is no ATM in the area and the USB is nearer to the farmers than the nearest ATM. Hence the awareness and usage of ATM services can be increased only through the provision of ATM. Since respondents are not possessing smart phones, the scope for mobile banking is very limited in the study area at present. The study also revealed feature that none of the respondents are taking credit from informal sources even though money lenders are prominent in the area. FLP has been successful in creating at least partial awareness regarding KCC among the farmers.

    KERALA BAMBOO FEST 2012 Post Show Report The Department of Industries & Commerce, Government of Kerala in association with Kerala State Bamboo Mission (KSBM) and Kerala Bureau of Industrial Promotion (K-BIP) organized the 9th edition of ‘Kerala Bamboo Fest’ (Kerala Bamboo Fest 2012) at Jawaharlal Nehru International Stadium Ground, Kaloor, Kochi from December 6 to 9, 2012. The Fest was inaugurated by Shri. P.K Kunhalikutty, Hon’ble Minister (Industries & IT) in the meeting presided over by Shri. Hibi Eden, Member of Legislative Assembly (Ernakulam) on December 7, 2012. Shri. V.K. Ebrahim Kunju Hon’ble Minister (Works) released the Fest Directory and the same was handed over to Shri. Kameshwar Ojha, Deputy Director General, National Bamboo Mission, New Delhi. Shri. Tony Chammani, Worshipful Mayor, Kochi Corporation; Shri. Dominic Presentation, Member of Legislative Assembly (Kochi), Shri.
