  • Jen Toomey Named USATF-New England Athlete of the Month for February
NEWS For immediate release, Feb. 7, 2005 Contact: [email protected] Jen Toomey named USATF-New England Athlete of the Month for February BOSTON – Jen Toomey of Salem, MA has been named USA Track & Field New England’s Athlete of the Month for February 2005. Toomey, running her first race since August 2004, successfully defended her title in the 1500m at the USA Indoor Track & Field Championships on February 26 at the Reggie Lewis track in Roxbury, MA. She took the lead at mid-race, picked up the pace during the second half, then sprinted strongly on the last lap towin in 4:13.25. When asked how it felt to enter her first race in six months at the national championships, Toomey was quick to credit her coach, Tom McDermott. “If Tom wasn’t my coach, I wouldn’t have attempted this,” she said. “He helps me feel more courageous and to want to be the best I can be all the time – even if I don’t feel as ready as I’d like. I knew that no matter what happened, that I’d get something out of the race.” Toomey indicated that her next race will be an 800m at the Drake Relays in Des Moines, IA, in April. She emphasized the importance, in her plans, of Photo: Robert E. Klein, Boston Globe the 1500m at the Prefontaine Classic in Eugene, OR in June, where she hopes to get a qualifying time for the World Championships in Athletics to be held in Helsinki, Finland in August. Asked if she is focusing on the 1500 more than the 800 this year, Toomey hesitated before answering; “I will focus on the 1500…but I feel I have unfinished business in the 800, I think I can still accomplish something there.” A number of New England athletes medaled or placed well at the USA Indoor Championships.

  • NBNI Meet Program
Welcome We welcome all the outstanding participants to the 2018 New Balance Nationals Indoor Championships. And we wish a special welcome to all parents, coaches, and friends – all of whose support is invaluable. Our organization, the National Scholastic Athletics Foundation, does more than present national-caliber track and field and cross country events. We also actively support clinics and other meets with substantial financial commitments. Over the years, NSAF has grown from helping a few athletes to one that annually enables over 10,000 athletes to participate in various meets and activities. This is the 35th edition of the event, which has had various names since its inception in 1984. We are again happy to have New Balance as our title sponsor. New Balance is a wonderful part- ner – we have been together for eight years, and we expect to be together for many more years to come. We mourn the loss of Dr. Norbert Sander, who passed unexpectedly a few days after last year’s meet. Dr. Sander was the driving force in making The Armory what it is today. He is sorely missed. We appreciate The Armory’s new leadership, led by Rita Finkel and Jonathan Schindel, with whom we have a great relationship. We trust that everyone present these three days will have memorable experiences, and we wish everyone great success! Sincerely, Jim Spier Meet Director Congratulations on earning a spot at New Balance Nationals Indoor 2018! Your determination, work ethic, and incredible talent qualified you for this very special world class indoor track & field meet. Like many Olympians before you, your capability created the opportunity to compete at an elite level and enjoy this one of a kind experience.

  • Best of MCDC 2003-2019 – #10 Sara
The Best of Music City Distance Carnival: 2003-2019 Track #10: Sara Vaughn - 2017 Women’s 1500m by Dave Milner t is fitting that, on Mother’s Day, I get to tell the story of supermom Sara Vaughn’s 1500m win at MCDC in 2017. Vaughn, an unsponsored 31-year-old, five feet and one inch, mother I of three (at the time) from Boulder, CO won the women’s 1500m for the second straight year, clocking a PB, a Meet Record, and World Championships qualifying time of 4:06.64. Sara Ensrud was born in the small (pop. 8,500) western Nebraska town of Gering, about 10 miles from the Wyoming state line. She dreamed of being an Olympian since the age of 6, but for about 8 years, it was in gymnastics, a sport she pursued until the local gym went out of business. Sara’s mom told her to go meet up with the cross-country team about a week before she started her freshman year. Mom, as they say, knows best. Sara attended Gering High School, was all-state in cross country all four years, won multiple state titles, and had clocked a 4:58 1600 by the time she graduated in 2004. Solid, but not setting the prep track world ablaze. After a somewhat disappointing freshman year at University of Virginia, she transferred to Colorado to be closer to home. She would now be coached by Jay Johnson. She soon began dating a teammate, a long-legged local lad hailing from Aurora, CO, Brent Vaughn.
