  • T and Field Events Information Packet
FIELD EVENTS PACKET # 16 INSTRUCTIONS This Learning Packet has two parts: (1) text to read and (2) questions to answer. The text describes a particular sport or physical activity, and relates its history, rules, playing techniques, scoring, notes and news. The Response Forms (questions and puzzles) check your understanding and appreciation of the sport or physical activity. INTRODUCTION Field events are competitions which involve jumping and throwing: the long jump, the high jump, the javelin throw, the discus throw, the hammer throw, the pole vault and the shot-put. HISTORY OF FIELD SPORTS Track and \ eld events are commonly known as “athletics” in England and on the European continent. Such events are among the oldest form of competitive sports ever recorded. These events were encouraged among young athletes in ancient Egypt and Asia. The Olympic Games, which are held every four years, show- case the talents of international athletes who specialize in track and \ eld events. Other competitions for track and \ eld participants include the European, Commonwealth, African, Pan-American and Asian competitions. HOW THE SPORTS ARE PLAYED THE LONG JUMP The long jump, formerly known as “the broad jump,” is considered the least dif \ cult of \ eld events. The most important ingredients for success in this jump are an agile body and “springy” legs, which is a popular way of describing legs whose muscles are capable of the kind of explosive power required to hurl the mass of the body a long distance. Physical Education Learning Packets #16 Field Events Text © 2011 Advantage Press, Inc. The long jump requires the athlete to jump from a takeoff board and leap into the air.

  • 2017 Annual Meeting Committee Reports
2017 USATF ANNUAL MEETING COMMITTEE REPORTS 2017 Athletes Advisory Committee Annual Report Submitted October 30, 2017 Purpose: The purpose of this report is to summarize the strategic goals and progress towards such of the USATF Athletes Advisory Committee in 2017. Strategic Goal #1: Athlete Funding & Support Increase athlete funding through prize money, stipends, Revenue Distribution Plan The RDP contract is being finalized between the national office and the AAC to ensure fair treatment and no room for interpretation. A plan for the 2018 RDP money (since there is no team to make and be paid for) is being presented to the national office. Athletes need to be paid on time, in a predictable manner. A schedule is being put together detailing when each type of payment can be expected (Tier payments, prize money, RDP), to which the national office will be held accountable. The Emergency Relief Fund was finalized in 2016 to provide emergency financial assistance to current or recently retired athletes facing a catastrophic event causing financial distress. In 2017, the fund was first used to help athletes in dire situations. USATF has funded the account initially, with the AAC being responsible for future fundraising. Strategic Goal #2: Domestic Competitive Opportunities It is important to the AAC that we continue to seek out opportunities for domestic competitions to reduce the dependency on the European circuit. 2019 will be an especially important year, as the World Championships will take place much later than usual (late Sept/early Oct). We will need domestic competitive opportunities in June, July and August of 2019.

  • Jen Toomey Named USATF-New England Athlete of the Month for February
NEWS For immediate release, Feb. 7, 2005 Contact: [email protected] Jen Toomey named USATF-New England Athlete of the Month for February BOSTON – Jen Toomey of Salem, MA has been named USA Track & Field New England’s Athlete of the Month for February 2005. Toomey, running her first race since August 2004, successfully defended her title in the 1500m at the USA Indoor Track & Field Championships on February 26 at the Reggie Lewis track in Roxbury, MA. She took the lead at mid-race, picked up the pace during the second half, then sprinted strongly on the last lap towin in 4:13.25. When asked how it felt to enter her first race in six months at the national championships, Toomey was quick to credit her coach, Tom McDermott. “If Tom wasn’t my coach, I wouldn’t have attempted this,” she said. “He helps me feel more courageous and to want to be the best I can be all the time – even if I don’t feel as ready as I’d like. I knew that no matter what happened, that I’d get something out of the race.” Toomey indicated that her next race will be an 800m at the Drake Relays in Des Moines, IA, in April. She emphasized the importance, in her plans, of Photo: Robert E. Klein, Boston Globe the 1500m at the Prefontaine Classic in Eugene, OR in June, where she hopes to get a qualifying time for the World Championships in Athletics to be held in Helsinki, Finland in August. Asked if she is focusing on the 1500 more than the 800 this year, Toomey hesitated before answering; “I will focus on the 1500…but I feel I have unfinished business in the 800, I think I can still accomplish something there.” A number of New England athletes medaled or placed well at the USA Indoor Championships.
