He sang in the choir at St. Elijah Syrian Orthodox Church and briefly studied piano. He honed his writing skills with journalism courses, even working for a spell at the Ottawa Citizen. By 13, he had his own vocal group, the Bobbysoxers. He performed at every amateur night he could get to in his mother’s car, unbeknownst to his her of course. Soon after, he won a trip to New York by winning a Campbell’s soup contest that required him to spend three months collecting soup can labels. It was there his dream was solidified, he was going to make it as a singer composer; there was not a doubt in his young tenacious mind. In 1956, he convinced his parents to let him travel to Los Angeles, where he called every record company in the phone book looking for an audition. A meeting with Modern Records led to the release of Anka’s first single, “Blau-Wile Deverest Fontaine.” It was not a hit, but Anka kept plugging away, going so far to sneak into Fats Domino’s dressing room to meet the man and his manager in Ottawa. When Anka returned New York in 1957, he scored a meeting with Don Costa, the A&R man for ABC-Paramount Records. -

The Denver Post Online: What's Up 3/10/00 9:03 AM Out of sight is jazz drummer's joy By Jeff Bradley Denver Post Critic-at-Large Jan. 14 - The first thing you notice about Claudio Slon is that he plays the drums left-handed. But over the course of a set or two, something more important emerges. Unlike most jazz drummers, Slon never shows off. He takes few solos, and when he does, they're short and sweet. Instead, he focuses on creating that mystical commodity known to jazz musicians as a "groove,'' a term better defined in your bones than in words. A groove isn't just a beat. It's an irresistible force that propels a band forward, never hurrying, never lagging, always there, always swinging, supporting the soloists without getting in their way. It's the opposite of the Gene Krupa, Buddy Rich, Tony Williams sort of drumming, which draws attention to itself. It's more the Shelly Manne, Joe Morello, Connie Kay school of rhythmic subtlety and understatement - in Slon's case, with a Latin kick. You can hear the Brazilian all month at Vartan's jazz club, 1800 Glenarm Place (303-399-1111). He plays during the week with local musicians and on weekends with international stars Randy Brecker (Friday-Saturday), Herbie Mann (Jan. 23-24) and Benny Golson (Jan. 30-31). If you like bossa nova and Brazilian jazz, you're probably already familiar with Slon. Born December 12, 1915, in Hoboken, New Jersey, he developed an early interest in music, becoming proficient as a singer and arranging for bands by his teens. Following the exposure resulting from a successful appearance on the then-popular Major Bowes Amateur Hour radio show, he came to the attention of Harry James, who hired him to front his big band.
