Follow the road 100 mt and turn left, in the direction of SARTEANO. When you arrive in Sarteano (6.7 km from the toll booth), go straight through the roundabout. Pass through the traffic light and after 200 mt., turn left towards CASTIGLIONCELLO DEL TRINORO and follow the road out of town. Follow the brown sign for “borgo medievale di Castiglioncello del Trinoro”. The road makes a sharp turn right after 600 mt. from your previous turn in the heart of Sarteano. Stay on the paved road at the “fork” and head up the hill. After 4 km, you’ll come to a second “fork” in the road (where the road bears to the left or turns slightly right to a gravel road). Continue to follow the brown sign for “borgo medievale di Castiglioncello del Trinoro” and turn right onto the gravel road.

The troops were entering the Tuscan hill country with the valleys of the Ombrone and Tiber Rivers now behind them. On the right the French were up against the Orcia River; all along the line the most difficult coun­ try yet encountered north of Rome lay just ahead, and evidences of the stiffening German defense were slowly accumulating. On the extreme left, where troops of the 36th Division were pressing into the hills bordering the north and northwest side of the Ombrone Valley, the coastline swings sharply northwest, thus increasing the frontage of the IV Corps zone and necessitating the use of another division. The plan of IV Corps was to continue the 36th Division along the coastline, following the general axis of Highway 1, while the 1st Armored Division advanced abreast on the right flank, through rugged mountains and over a multitude*of small roads and trails. The 36th Division received a zone about 12 miles wide; the 1st Armored Division front covered a slightly wider area, at places reaching a width of nearly 20 miles.     Sulle orme dei monaci Itinerari per abbazie ed eremi medievali fra Orcia, Chiana e Amiata Da Asciano 2 a Sarteano MONTE OLIVETO MAGGIORE (Asciano) L’abbazia di S. Maria a Monte Oliveto Maggiore fu fondata nel 1313 da Giovanni Tolomei (1272-1348), membro di una famiglia nobile senese ritiratosi con due pari coetanei a vita ascetica, nel desertico scenario di Accona (Asciano). La comunità abbracciò la Rego- la benedettina e fu riconosciuta dalla Chiesa in breve tempo, prendendo nome dalla località. Fino al 1809 l’abbazia visse secoli di splendore, per tornare ai mo- naci quasi un secolo dopo. Vi si accede da un palazzetto turrito in laterizio (1393-1526) sopra il cui arco è una cinquecentesca Ma- donna col Bambino e angeli in terracotta policroma in- vetriata di bottega dei Buglioni; gli corrisponde sopra quello interno un S. Benedetto benedicente d’identiche fattura e provenienza.
