  • 7.5. Identified Sites of Significance Residential Buildings Within Rosettenville (Semi-Detached, Freestanding)
7.5. Identified sites of significance_Residential buildings within Rosettenville (Semi-detached, freestanding) Introduction Residential buildings are buildings that are generally used for residential purposes or have been zoned for residential usage. It must be noted the majority of residences are over 60 years, it was therefore imperative for detailed visual study to be done where the most significant buildings were mapped out. Their significance could be as a result of them being associated to prominent figures, association with special events, design patterns of a certain period in history, rarity or part of an important architectural school. Most of the sites identified in this category are of importance in their local contexts and are representative of the historical and cultural patterns that could be discerned from the built environment. All the identified sites were given a 3A category explained below. Grading 3A_Sites that have a highly significant association with a historic person, social grouping, historic events, public memories, historical activities, and historical landmarks (should by all means be conserved) 3B_ Buildings of marginally lesser significance (possibility of senstive alteration and addition to the interior) 3C_Buildings and or sites whose significance is in large part significance that contributes to the character of significance of the environs (possibility for alteration and addition to the exterior) Summary Table of identified sites in the residential category: Site/ Description Provisional Heritage Implications

  • BUILDING from SCRATCH: New Cities, Privatized Urbanism and the Spatial Restructuring of Johannesburg After Apartheid
INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF URBAN AND REGIONAL RESEARCH 471 DOI:10.1111/1468-2427.12180 — BUILDING FROM SCRATCH: New Cities, Privatized Urbanism and the Spatial Restructuring of Johannesburg after Apartheid claire w. herbert and martin j. murray Abstract By the start of the twenty-first century, the once dominant historical downtown core of Johannesburg had lost its privileged status as the center of business and commercial activities, the metropolitan landscape having been restructured into an assemblage of sprawling, rival edge cities. Real estate developers have recently unveiled ambitious plans to build two completely new cities from scratch: Waterfall City and Lanseria Airport City ( formerly called Cradle City) are master-planned, holistically designed ‘satellite cities’ built on vacant land. While incorporating features found in earlier city-building efforts, these two new self-contained, privately-managed cities operate outside the administrative reach of public authority and thus exemplify the global trend toward privatized urbanism. Waterfall City, located on land that has been owned by the same extended family for nearly 100 years, is spearheaded by a single corporate entity. Lanseria Airport City/Cradle City is a planned ‘aerotropolis’ surrounding the existing Lanseria airport at the northwest corner of the Johannesburg metropole. These two new private cities differ from earlier large-scale urban projects because everything from basic infrastructure (including utilities, sewerage, and the installation and maintenance of roadways),

20 OCTOBER - 26 OCTOBER 2013 TOURNAMENT CONFIRMATION PACKAGE www.worldindoorcricketfederation.com 01 Dear World Indoor Cricket Federation participants I would like to extend a warm South African welcome to all players, managers and officials taking part in the Indoor Cricket Masters World Series 2013. The tournament will take place in the Gauteng province which can be considered as the sporting hub of the African continent. South Africa has played host to a few major sporting world cups in the past, the largest three being the Soccer, Cricket and Rugby world cups, so we have developed a reputation for hosting fantastic international Indoor Cricket events. Gauteng Province is situated a stone throw away from some of the most spectacular tourist destinations we have, so visiting some of these before or after the tournament would be an experience not to be missed. There are a host of game reserves within a 3 hour drive where you could get a true experience of the famous African Bushveld. There you would be able to see the “big 5” which are the Lion, Elephant, Rhino, Leopard and Buffalo, in their natural environment. We will also be situated two hours away from Sun City, South Africa’s version of Las Vegas. Sun City is best known for playing host to the $2 mill golf tournament, five star hotels and casino’s all nestled into the Pilandsberg game reserve where you will also find the “Big 5”. Indoor Cricket or “Action Cricket” as it is better known in South Africa is one of the fastest growing sports in this sport mad country.

This reflects the increased rates of rural-urban migration from the late 1980s as urbanisation controls collapsed, but also the relative success of Johannesburg’s economy and democratic-era policies to contain urban sprawl (such as the urban development boundary). The ending of apartheid regulations allowed a release in a pent-up demand for access to large cities with much of the movement directed to the three large metropolitan cities in Gauteng. Densification in the city has occurred in both planned and unplanned ways. In line with directions in planning internationally, post-apartheid planning has placed strong emphasis on urban densification and compaction.

  • Proposed Guideline for Modelling Water Demand by Suburb
Proposed guideline TECHNICAL PAPER JOURNAL OF THE SOUTH AFRICAN for modelling water INSTITUTION OF CIVIL ENGINEERING demand by suburb Vol 56 No 1, April 2014, Pages 63–68, Paper 947 M L Griffioen, J E van Zyl MARIETJIE GRIFFIOEN Pr Eng completed her Master’s Degree in Civil Engineering at the Rand Afrikaans University (now University of Johannesburg) in 2004. She served as a lecturer This study investigated factors affecting the average domestic water demand of a large at this same institution until recently. She is a number of suburbs in South Africa. Suburbs form an ideal demand grouping since they tend member of the South African Institution of Civil to have similar stand areas, climatic conditions and user characteristics. In addition, since Engineering (SAICE) and of the International properties within a suburb are close to one another, it may be reasonably assumed that Water Association (IWA). She was part of the organising committee of the Water Distribution System Analysis (WDSA) differences in user demands will cancel one another out so that a designer only has to cater Conference, held in the Kruger National Park in 1998. In 2003 she was for the average demand of the suburb. A database on measured domestic water demands awarded the prize for the best paper in the Journal of the South African was used to determine the average of the Annual Average Daily Demand (AADD) for a large Institution of Civil Engineering. Her research fields include water distribution, number of suburbs in South Africa (i.e. the average AADD per suburb), and this data was green buildings, grey water and rainwater harvesting.
