• Ar·my ROTC wins fourth place in regional contest

by Jenni Offenburger COPY EDITOR

A nine-man team of cadettes representing the UCF Army ROTC Fighting Knights Battalion placed fourth at the annual Warrior Region Ranger Chal lenge Championship April 6-8 at Ft. Riley (Kan.). • The team, headed by Capt. Juan B. Soto, was one point a way from ranking in the top three in the region in its first year of competition. The top three teams are from Texas Christian, Texas A&M and Emporia State (Kan.), respectively. "We were competing against well-established tra ditional powers of the south," Lt. Col. Daniel J. Conn said. "These programs have been in existence for many years." The region includes midwestem and southern states and Puerto Rico. UCFis the top-ranked team in Florida and in their brigade, which includes Florida, Ckorgia and Puerto Rico. According to Conn, a first year team such as UCF's is "not expected to place or win anything, and placing first and second in four [of eight) events is unheard of." Campus Action for Animals has 32 cats in its possession and no homes to put them in. The group is asking students to help them find homes for the cats. On Feb. 15, CAA took 40 cats into their care after the Orlando Humane Society confiscated them from an elderly woman on Hazard Street in Orlando. Charges of improper treatment of animals were brought against the woman. The Humane Society could only hold the cats as long as the case remained in court, so CAA took them into its care. CAA has been trying to get the cats adopted since Feb. 15. Eight have found Homes. "What we need most is homes," CAA secretary Natalie Davis said. The CAA is looking for respon sible students to adopt the cats, which are now in foster homes. "When the cats first came, they were afraid and fought constantly," Davis said. "Now they are friendly and healthy enough to play." The members of CAA are determined to get the 32 remaining cats adopted. John Citrone, CAA presi dent, said, "If it takes us a year to find them homes, Michael uughlin/CENTRAL FLORIDA FUTURE we will get them all adopted." Citrone expressed a need for money, food, cat litter, bedding, people's time RECORD ON WHEELS and more foster homes to help the cats. People have fought, petitioned and gone to great lengths for the right to express themselves through music. Another struggle for freedom of musical expression is going on right now at UCF. . The place: WUCF-FM (89.9), "our" campus radio station. The allies: The students and those who sup port the student's right to play the music they want to hear at the station. The opponents: The administrators, Peter Carroll and all of those who want to cling to the way things have always been at the radio sta tion. The allies will finally have their day on Fri day. President Altman and his review panel, consisting of select faculty, administrators and staff members, will hear their side about the issue of music selection for WUCF. At long last the government takes action on papayas

~~~~ Federal At long last, the federal government is taking Obscene action. I found this out thanks to alert reader Dawn Price, who sent me a notice from the Standardization Section of the Fresh Products Branch of the Fruit and Fruit Vegetable Division of the Agricultural Marketing PAPAYA Service of the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The Guide11ne5. moment I saw this notice, I said to myself: "I wonder what those wild and crazy dudes at the Standardiza tion Section of the Fresh Products Branch of the Fruit and Vegetable Division of the Agricultural Market oNYOU! ing Service of the U.S. Department-of Agriculture are up to now!" The answer is: They are standardizing papayas. I am not making this up. They have churned out several dense pages of proposed papaya standards, ' featuring subsections and subsections and state ments such as this: ..... ----+ "'Fairly well formed' means the papaya may be moderately lopsided, flattened, elongated or other wise lacking symmetry, but the fruit shall not be suf ficiently misshapen to materially detract from it appearance." I know how you're reacting to this news, as a taxpayer and a consumer. You're saying to yourself: "It's about time, after so many tragic deaths directly linked to misshapen papayas, that the men and women of the Standardization Section of the Fresh Products Branch of the Fruit and Vegetable Division of the Agricultural Marketing Service of the U.S. Department of Agriculture have decided to take ac tion. BUT ARE THEY GOING FAR ENOUGH?" I regret to report that the answer is: No. Because there is a serious problem here, a problem that poses a threat potentially even more dangerous than the epidemic of Swine Flu shots that swept the nation during the administration of Gerald "R." Ford (Aug. 9-12, 1974). The problem is that in certain Hispanic cultures, particularly the Cuban culture, "papaya" is an OB SCENE WORD. Really.
