THE MUSIC MAKERS in collaboration with In collaboration with Normunds Šnē, conductor Thiago Bordin, choreographer presents L’Histoire du Soldat Igor Stravinsky Little Summer Music Pēteris Vasks Dance • Music • Drama “Most people today no longer possess beliefs, love, and ideals. The spiritual dimension has been lost. My intention is to provide food for the soul, and this is what I preach in my works.” – Pēteris Vasks Overview This collaborative chamber production focuses on work by two composers whose oeuvres have explored the topics of humanistic ideals and the realities of human nature. Igor Stravinsky, born in Oranienbaum, a Baltic resort near St. Petersburg, and Pēteris Vasks, who grew up in post-war Soviet Latvia, were from different generations – Vasks was just 25 years old when Stravinsky died in 1971 at 88. They are important creative voices of their respective generations, both deeply influenced by the rich folk traditions of Eastern Europe and the all too real perils of their times. Stravinsky voiced his concerns about war and the fateful choices we make while Vasks has been driven by mankind’s assault on the environment. Both Igor Stravinsky’s L’Histoire du Soldat and Pēteris Vasks’ Little Summer Music features the premiere performances of new choreography by critically acclaimed dancer-choreographer Thiago Bordin. The production is realized by an internationally renowned group of collaborators: violinists Vadim Gluzman, Liza Ferschtman, and Marc Bouchkov; pianist Angela Yoffe; dancers Silvia Azzoni, Alexandre Riabko, Marijn Rademaker; conductor Normunds Šnē and members of the Sinfonietta Riga. THE MUSIC MAKERS The Music Maker’s signature nstage/offstage forum allows for a dynamic and candid dialogue between these artists and your audience. -

Introduction The World Ballet Festival Returns for Summer 2018 From the 14th World Ballet FestivalPhoto: Kiyonori Hasegawa For more than 40 years now, the most talented and renowned dancers have come to Tokyo from around the world to perform in the World Ballet Festival, which will once again be held this summer. When it was first introduced in 1976 under the leadership of Tadatsugu Sasaki, it was very rare for the star ballerinas of different companies or countries to share a stage. Its first edition caused an international sensation by bringing together three legends, Margot Fonteyn from the UK, Maya Plisetskaya from the Soviet Union and Alicia Alonso from Cuba. Since then stars such as Jorge Donn, Patrick Dupond, Sylvie Guillem, Alessandra Ferri, Manuel Legris and Vladimir Malakhov have become regular participants, bringing the audiences to a storm of excitement every time and inspiring them to watch and compare all the dancers perform. The circle of energy created between audiences and artists in this festival produces an atmosphere that motivates dancers to perform to the best of their abilities, and has resulted in many legendary performances. Featuring the world's leading dancers, all from different artistic backgrounds and representing a wide variety of repertoire and styles, the festival also offers an opportunity to observe an overview of today's ballet scene. While there are now many similar festivals, the quality of both artists and audiences at the World Ballet Festival continues to be amongst the highest in the world. Ballet is an art form that unites finely tuned bodies and minds with sophisticated powers of expression, to create a deep and lasting impression on the audience members. -

With this in mind, the coming season might be called “The Classics”. The premiere of Rudolf Nurejev’s Don Quixote based on Marius Petipa’s original choreography fits into this context as well as Chopin Dances, an evening consisting of ballets by Jerome Robbins. As a choreographer, I’m looking forward to approaching an icon of classical music – Ludwig van Beethoven – whose 250th birth- day will be celebrated in 2020 and whose music will be the starting point for a new full-length ballet. Our next season’s program offers a wide variety of repertoire favori- tes! Apart from my most recent creations (Anna Karenina, The Song of the Earth, Turangalîla and Duse), I would especially like to recom- mend Lady of the Camellias – a ballet whose 40th anniversary will be celebrated in 2018. Die politisch hochkochende Diskussion darüber, ob Stefanie JEtzt IM Carp die schottische Band „Young Fathers“, die „Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions“ gegen Israel unterstützt, zur Ruhrtriennale hätte einladen dürfen, führt hoffentlich voRvER- nicht zu ähnlich katastrophalen Konsequenzen. Populismus und lautes Geschrei von allen Seiten anstatt differenzierter Diskussionen, fundierter Denkarbeit und gut kAUf! recherchiertem Journalismus schaden der Kunst und ihrer Freiheit. Umso glücklicher macht es, dass Nele Hertling in diesem Jahr den Deutschen Tanzpreis erhält. Eine Netzwerkerin für den zeitgenössischen Tanz, die seit vielen Jahrzehnten diese Kunstform voranbringt: Leise, konzentriert, bescheiden, mit hoher Sachkenntnis und feinem Gespür fördert sie Talente, Strukturen und Ideen, ohne auf Selbstmarketing und simple Botschaften in sozialen Medien zurückzugreifen. Ein Vor- bild für uns alle und ein Hoffnungsschimmer für den Tanz. Ebenso wie die aktuelle MeToo-Debatte, die auch die Ballett- und Tanzszene erreicht hat und hoffentlich lang- fristig zu neuen, gerechteren Machtstrukturen führt. Wir feiern in diesem Sommer den 75. Geburtstag von Gert Weigelt, einem KINOSAISON Mann, der wie kein anderer tänzerische und fotografische Qualität zusammenbringt. 2018/19 Wir reflektieren die Rolle des Handlungsballetts im deutschen Stadttheater. -

My intention is to provide food for the soul, and this is what I preach in my works.” – Pēteris Vasks Overview This collaborative chamber production for five performers features a work by Pēteris Vasks, who grew up in post-war Soviet Latvia and became an important creative voice of his generation, deeply influenced by the rich folk traditions of Eastern Europe and the all too real perils of our times. Througout his musical ouevre, Vasks has voiced his views and concerns about the complex interaction between man and nature, the beauty of life, and the imminent ecological and moral destruction of the world. Little Summer Music is originally a suite scored for violin and piano. Our production adds choreography for three dancers by award-winning choreographer Thiago Bordin. The production draws from a Music Makers collaborative of internationally renowned artists: dancers Silvia Azzoni, Alexandre Riabko, and Marijn Rademaker; violinists Vadim Gluzman, Marc Bouchkov and Liza Ferschtman; and pianist Angela Yoffe. THE MUSIC MAKERS The Music Maker’s signature nstage/offstage forum allows for a dynamic and candid dialogue between these artists and your audience. The performance is paired with The Workshop, a unique model of educational outreach that simultaneously embraces the arts of music and dance, where students have the opportunity to collaborate together with celebrated performers and each other. -

Ballet tells stories differently. Wordlessly communicating inner states and human relationships rather than specific information, dance becomes the living shape of emotion. As a choreographer, I was influenced early on in my artistic development by my mentor, the teacher and theatre director Father John J. Walsh S.J. who taught me to see dance as a special form of theatre. Since then, I have experimented in my many creations with the idea of devising new forms for narra tive ballet. In keeping with its motto “Narratives”, the 2019/20 season of the Hamburg Ballet explores this issue with some of the solutions I have discovered over the past years. For the winter premiere, I return, after A Streetcar Named Desire, to Tennessee Williams, this time using his great play The Glass Menagerie as inspiration. Although his drama involves only four characters, the internal, poetic dream world of his characters will be my subject. The second premiere of the season shows the work of the choreographer Christopher Wheeldon based on a classic of world literature. Wheeldon himself will oversee the staging of his adaptation of William Shakespeare’s The Winter’s Tale. His work is known in Hamburg because of the ballet VIII based on King Henry VIII which he created in 2001 for The Britten Evening. -
