Fung Yuen SSSI & Butterfly Reserve Moth Survey 2009 Fauna Conservation Department Kadoorie Farm & Botanic Garden 29 June 2010 Kadoorie Farm and Botanic Garden Publication Series: No 6 Fung Yuen SSSI & Butterfly Reserve moth survey 2009 Fung Yuen SSSI & Butterfly Reserve Moth Survey 2009 Executive Summary The objective of this survey was to generate a moth species list for the Butterfly Reserve and Site of Special Scientific Interest [SSSI] at Fung Yuen, Tai Po, Hong Kong. The survey came about following a request from Tai Po Environmental Association. Recording, using ultraviolet light sources and live traps in four sub-sites, took place on the evenings of 24 April and 16 October 2009. In total, 825 moths representing 352 species were recorded. Of the species recorded, 3 meet IUCN Red List criteria for threatened species in one of the three main categories “Critically Endangered” (one species), “Endangered” (one species) and “Vulnerable” (one species” and a further 13 species meet “Near Threatened” criteria. Twelve of the species recorded are currently only known from Hong Kong, all are within one of the four IUCN threatened or near threatened categories listed. Seven species are recorded from Hong Kong for the first time. The moth assemblages recorded are typical of human disturbed forest, feng shui woods and orchards, with a relatively low Geometridae component, and includes a small number of species normally associated with agriculture and open habitats that were found in the SSSI site. Comparisons showed that each sub-site had a substantially different assemblage of species, thus the site as a whole should retain the mosaic of micro-habitats in order to maintain the high moth species richness observed. -

During the present study, a total of 675 moth specimens were collected from the study area which represented 112 species from 16 families and eight super families. Though much of the species has been reported earlier from other parts of India, 15 species were first records for the state of Kerala. The highest species richness was shown by the family Erebidae and the least by the families Lasiocampidae, Uraniidae, Notodontidae, Pyralidae, Yponomeutidae, Zygaenidae and Hepialidae with one species each. The results of this preliminary study are promising; it sheds light on the unknown biodiversity of Vagamon hills which needs to be strengthened through comprehensive future surveys. Of late, high infestation by scale insects has been reported from several districts of Assam, especially Tinsukia, Dibrugarh, Sivasagar and Golaghat, which demands immediate attention. This bulletin contains brief descriptions of some major pests of tea, their biology and the remedial measures needed to form an integrated pest management strategy. In this paper we focus on the genus- level phylogenetics of this subfamily. A cladistic study was performed using 414 morphological and biochemical char- acters obtained from 411 species belonging to 186 species-groups of 73 genera plus 21 outgroups. Phylogenetic anal- ysis using maximum parsimony leads to the following conclusions: (1) neither the current concept of Zygaenidae nor that of Chalcosiinae is monophyletic; (2) the previously proposed sister-group relationship of Zygaeninae + Chal- cosiinae is rejected in favour of the relationship (Zygaeninae + ((Callizygaeninae + Cleoda) + (Heteropan + Chalcosi- inae))); (3) except for the monobasic Aglaopini, none of the tribes sensu Alberti (1954) is monophyletic; (4) chalcosiine synapomorphies include structures of the chemical defence system, scent organs of adults and of the apodemal system of the male genitalia. -

Email: [email protected] This paper presents an inventory of 418 species of moths (303 identified to species, 116 identified to genus) from 28 families belonging to 15 superfamilies, which were recorded by light trapping at eight sites in northern Western Ghats, India. Of the species recorded, with reference to their published distribution ranges, 11 species from five families appear to be new records for India, range extensions were noted for 130 species from 16 families, and 25 species from six families are endemic to India. The dominant families were Erebidae, Geometridae, Sphingidae and Crambidae. The highest number of moths were recorded from Malshej Ghat, Sanjay Gandhi National Park and Bheemashankar Wildlife Sanctuary. The highest species diversity was recorded from Sanjay Gandhi National Park. Amboli, Koyna Wildlife Sanctuary and Malshej Ghat showed a number of new records and seem to support interesting and endemic moth fauna. -

Introduction Intensive research on the subfamily Chalcosiinae has been carried out during the last ten or twenty years. During these investigations, many new species could be found and described (e. g. ENDO & KISHIDA, 1999, HORIE & OWADA, 2000, 2002, KISHIDA & ENDO, 1999, OWADA, 1996, 2001, OWADA & HORIE, 1999, 2002, YEN, 2003 a, b, 2004, YEN, ROBINSON & QUICKE, 2005). Furthermore, several important phylogentic and systematic papers were published about Zygaenidae or some subfamilies of Zygaenidae (e. g. TARMANN, 1992, YEN et al., 2005, NIEHUIS et al., 2006). However, so far only very little is known about the biology of many species. Chalcosiinae Chalcosiinae is a subfamily of Zygaenidae which is almost restricted to the tropical Southeast Asian region. About 380 species are known in 70 genera (YEN, 2003).
