They gained prominence in 1964 with their hard-driving single "You Really Got Me", written by Ray Davies with his 17-year-old brother Dave on lead guitar. Ray Davies' compositions over his lengthy career have been an astonishing study in contrasts, with a range of styles and lyrics often containing elements of satire and social commentary about the aspirations and frustrations of British life. The protopunk, powerchord rock of the early Kinks hits (“All Day and All of the Night”, “Tired Of Waiting For You”) was followed by more sensitive, introspective songs ("Waterloo Sunset"), wry humour (“Sunny Afternoon”), anthems championing individualistic lifestyles and personalities ("Lola", “See My Friends”), celebrations of traditional English culture and living ("Victoria"), Music Hall-style vaudeville ("She's Bought a Hat Like Princess Marina's"), and commercial rock which combined all these elements ("Come Dancing"). 1980s New Wave groups such as The Jam, The Knack, and The Pretenders covered Kinks songs, and in the 1990s Britpop acts such as Blur, Oasis and Supergrass cited them as a major influence. Contrary to the PR blurb “This DVD contains some of the Kinks finest moments and is full of rarely seen performances from the sixties right through to the nineties…,” this is not rare material. The bulk of the material, particularly the full length clips, are taken from two sources: German TV show Beat Beat Beat , from 1965, and the video version of the 1980 live release One For The Road , shot in a Providence, RI arena in 1979 (both of which are available in whole separately). SINGLE-GENDER CAMPING: We believe that personal growth, character and identity are best developed in programs specific to boys and girls. Camp is a place I truly call my second home. With the outside world closing behind you as you pull into the driveway, you can already feel the comfort of this special place. Here you have your best friends in the whole world and a happy, fun, judgement-free zone. Everyone can be exactly who they are and they don’t have to worry at all about anyone thinking badly of them. I know when I’m away at camp, I could care less about my looks, how crazy I act, or even the fact that I can go 1-2 weeks without showering while biking from Gaylord to the Tahquamenon Falls, portaging 90 lb canoes, or hiking 120 miles because I’m still accepted by everyone around me (as a matter of fact, it’s seen as fun to do this).
