This diary tells the Markus’ story, a Jewish family — husband, wife, and two children — who leave Linz, Austria, to move Key Dates: to Vienna and manage to send their children to England. When the Jews Under war breaks out in September 1939, the parents manage to immigrate the Nazi Regime to the US, settling in Los Angeles in late 1939. The diary ends here, 1933–1939 without mentioning the children after their arrival in England. Adolph Markus was born 1898 in Linz, Austria; he died in 1971 in Los Angeles, California. April 20, 1938 Goes to Vienna to discuss emigration with relative. June 16, 1938 Family is subjected to search and harassment and threatened with deportation. July 13, 1938 Leaves Linz, goes to Vienna to stay with relatives, his house is confiscated. September 1939 Hitler annexes Sudetenland, Nazis take over Vienna and ransack Jewish homes. November 11, 1938 Kritallnacht brings wife and children to Vienna where they have trouble finding housing. January 1–31, 1939 Works to get children to England [on the Kindertransport] or out to USA. April, 1939 Children are prepared to leave for England. April 20, 1939 Writer receives affidavit for US to emigrate there. April 25, 1939 Children leave with group for England. May, 1939 Children arrive in England, Couple gets visa for US and book passage on 9/13/39 on the Franconia. All travel plans are suspended due to the outbreak of war on September 3, 1939. October 30, 1939 Marcus leaves Vienna for Holland and boards ship. November 2, 1939 Leaves. November 15, 1939 Arrives New York, helped and domiciled by Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society (HIAS). November 24, 1939 Leaves New York by bus to settle in Los Angeles. November 38, 1939 Arrives in Los Angeles. What is the role of the government? What does it mean to be a citizen? BIG UNDERSTANDINGS • We often don’t understand the impact that laws have on every aspect of our lives: Housing, education, employment, freedom of movement, access to money and other resources, ability to practice a religion, keep our families together, elect our leaders, enjoy basic health and safety protections. • Laws are chosen and enacted by people in the govern- ment; there are no laws of nature that protect our civil and human rights. • The Nazi government enacted and retracted laws against the Jews that dramatically altered their existence by constricting their ability to live, work, go to school, own a home, be with their families, and advocate for themselves. • The nature of these changing laws undermined how Jews believed they could live their lives as citizens of Germany and Austria. • The new laws also changed how non-Jews viewed their Jewish neighbors and empowered the Nazis to enact even more detrimental laws against Jews. • Our freedom and safety must be actively stewarded from one generation to the next. The Deepening Crisis: March 1938 – October 1938 1938 is always seen as a watershed in the persecution of the ‘Jews’1 as it was the year when geopolitical changes brought more ‘Jews’ under German rule and when antisemitic policies were substantially radicalized. Yet even before the Anschluss, the Nazis were becoming increasingly worried about the slow pace of Jewish emigration. Their own policies, combined with immigration restrictions elsewhere, had served to limit the numbers able to leave. At the same time, Nazi strategy itself was contradictory, with the ‘Jews’ being pressed to leave while simultaneously being stripped of the assets that would have made them acceptable immigrants in other countries. Nevertheless, individual emigration remained the Nazi strategy for making Germany judenfrei and in general, everything possible was done to hasten the emigration of the – albeit increasingly impoverished – ‘Jews’. A number of official instructions were issued to facilitate this. For example, the police record of Jewish emigrants could be ‘cleansed’ to make them more acceptable to countries of immigration. Professional qualifications that were in demand were also included on passports, and the Handwerkskammern were authorised to issue papers certifying the professional knowledge of Jewish emigrants.2 A partial solution to the fundamental contradictions in Nazi policy was found in more overt state violence and schemes for collective forced emigration that removed individual initiative or choice in destination. The latter element was tried at the beginning of 1938.

    Flight to Shanghai, 1938-1940: The Larger Setting Avraham Altman and Irene Eber Between November 1938 and August 1939, approximately 20,000 Central European refugees, most of them Jews, landed in Shanghai. They had sailed on German, Italian, and Japanese ships and, in the short span of eight months, constituted a massive exodus. What, however, is the background to this phenomenon, and, moreover, why did it rapidly diminish after August 1939?1 In order to answer these questions, we must look at the larger setting within which this process took place—something that, until now, has not been investigated. The Background In 1933, when Hitler came to power, there were around 500,000 Jews in Germany and 185,000 in Austria.2 In contrast to the gradual pressure over several years that had been exerted on the Jews in Germany to leave the country, when Austria came under German rule in March 1938, the Jews were immediately and ruthlessly persecuted.     Hitler’s Foreign policy – info adapted from BBC Bitesize website (link to all their info for the Germany topic in the Germany in Transition section of our website) Foreign policy aims Hitler had three main aims in his foreign policy: revise the Treaty of Versailles unite all German-speaking people into one Reich expand eastwards to achieve Lebensraum Historians have disagreed about Hitler’s aims. A J P Taylor argued that Hitler did not deliberately set out for a destructive war. Instead, Hitler was an opportunist and made gains in his foreign policy by direct action and audacity. Hugh Trevor-Roper has argued that Hitler had a long term plan - a programme of colonisation of Eastern Europe and a war of conquest in the West. This Stufenplan, step-by-step policy, led to war. Probably the most convincing argument is that Hitler had consistency of aims, but was also an opportunist that was flexible in his strategy. There were three stages to his foreign policy. A moderate policy up to 1935. Increased activity between 1935 and 1937. A more confident foreign policy after 1937, certain that there would be little opposition to his plans. Rearmament and conscription Rearmament created jobs in the armaments industry pushing the idea of 'guns before butter'. Rearmament started almost as soon as Hitler came to power but was announced publicly in 1935. The introduction of national service meant all young men spent six months in the RAD and then they were conscripted into the army. By 1939, 1.4 million men were in the army, so they were not counted as unemployed.
