A study of how the Kennedys extended their influence across south-west Scotland and acquired an earldom has never been undertaken. This thesis aims to fill the significant gap in our understanding of how lordship operated in this region. In particular, analysis of the interactions between the Kennedys and the earls of Carrick, usually the monarch or his heir, demonstrates that the key factor in their success was their policy of close alignment and support of the crown.

He felt the need of a book to which he could refer them for details of Scottish Grammar and Pronuncia- tion, which he could employ, in class, for the recitation of our literary masterpieces, and which the students themselves, after they left the University, could use either for purposes of declama- tion or teaching. The book is divided into three parts. Part I describes the sounds of Modem Scots with examples of their use written in the alphabet of the International Phonetic Association. Part II contrasts Scots Grammar with Standard English usage and gives copious illustrations from Modern Scottish Literature. Part III consists of a series of extracts from Modern Scots writers and a selection of ballads and songs with phonetic transcriptions.     A Biography of Cyrus McCormick February 15, 1809 - May 13, 1884 Cyrus Hall McCormick was born in Rockbridge County, Virginia and was the eldest son to Rober McCormick - a farmer, blacksmith, and inventor. His father worked on a horse-drawn reaping machine that would harvest grains. However, he failed at producing a working model. McCormick was known as an American industrialist and inventor. He was very talented at inventing and had invented a lightweight cradle for collecting harvested grains at a very young age. In 1831, he took over his father’s abandoned project to build a mechanical reaper. Within 6 weeks, he built, tested, refined, and demonstrated a working model of his machine. This machine features a vibrating cutting blade, a reel to bgrin the grains to it, and a platform to collect the harvest. In 1834, he filed a patent for his invention. Despite his success, farmers were not eager to adopt his invention and sales were virtually zero for a long time. During the bank panic of 1837, the family’s iron foundry was on the verge of bankruptcy. McCormick turned to his invention and spent his time improving his designs. Starting in 1841, the sales of his machine grew exponentially. This growth drove him to move his manufacturing work from his father’s barn to Chicago where he, with the help of mayor William Ogden, opened a factory. He went on to sell 800 machines during the first year of operation. McCormick faced a lot of challenges from many competing manufacturers who fought in court to block the renewal of his patent that was set to expire in 1848.

    CHAPTEE XXTIII. BIOGRAPHIES—SOUTH SIDE. Archibald Agnew, farmer, P. O. Sheffield, was born July 4, 1823, on a part of the old McCoy place, where his father then resided. His grandfather, Robert Agnew, was a native of Ireland, came to America, joined the continental army, and became one of the heroes of the revolution. He was captured, and taken to Quebec and confined on an English prison ship three months. After the war he went to Cannonsburg, Pa., and from there to the wilderness of Beaver county. He settled on Raredon's Run, lived here about fifty years, and died at the home of his son, William, aged eighty-five years. He was a member of the Old Seceder's church. His wife was Margaret Cornagy, who died young. They had three sons and three daughters. Of the sons William married Jane, daughter of David and Nancy (Shearer) McCoy. They had eiglit children, four of whom are deceased: John, Agnes, Esther and William. The last mentioned died in Libby Prison. Those living are Archibald, David, Jane and Samuel. William Agnew died at the age of seventy-eight years. He was a member of the United Presbyterian church; in politics a Democrat. Archibald Agnew, subject of this sketch, married Mary .J., daughter of John Purdy. Three children have blessed this union: James P. (died young), John C. and Margaret, the latter wife of John Greene. Mr. and Mrs. Agnew are active members of the United Presbyterian church. He is a Democrat and has held various township offices. Joseph Alexander, farmer, P.
