Fáilte roimh gach éinne. 13th SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME - 1st July 2018 REMEMBERING FR PAT BURKE, R.I.P. I read about your work on the islands off Mayo and how much you enjoyed it. I wondered about you heading off to celebrate Mass and the sacraments on Innisturk and Clare Island or your visits to Caher Island. Your feet, between boat and shore, brought something very special and sacred. I stood at the water’s edge on Lough Derg and watched barefooted men and women walk around me, focusing on their prayers and being pilgrims. Searching for something of Heaven and finding it – I hope and pray. I watched the waters but looked beyond them to people gathering in Westport, to walk past you – not barefooted but broken-hearted, bless themselves and offer a prayer and wonder “why?” I heard them whisper to your parents and your brothers how wonderful you were and how shocked they are. Your loss to them is immeasurable. Certainly you didn’t know the fullness of all you meant to people. I wonder where you are in all of this? I can’t help but believe you believed in the Resurrection you preached to so many and that you are now fully caught up in it. Then water splashes onto the slabs at my feet. Water of the lake meeting the solidness of stone. Changing its shade, moistening its hardened surface. How often you poured the waters of baptism on an infant’s head and watched it trickle back into the font from which it came. Parents smiled and so did you for it was God’s work. Your last Sunday was John The Baptist’s Day. I sensed you stepping ashore as the waters of Lough Derg met the stone beneath the pilgrims’ feet. I walked away from the water’s edge, believing you had found solid ground too and put your own mark on it as the stones were coloured by the lake’s edge this evening. I was proud of you as a priest, glad we met and grateful for your occasional texts and phonecalls. Pray for us Pat. We need someone to take your place. Be “vocation” now. Call people to walk where you walked and to cross the waters to the islands where you encountered something of a church we all want – a church of belonging and a church of shared vision. ARMSTRONG* & K.T.HIGGS3 I Geology Department, University College, Galway, Ireland 'Department of Geological Sciences, Durham University, South Road, Durham DH1 3LE, U.K 'Geology Department, University College, Cork, Ireland Abstract: The Clew Bay area in western Ireland contains the remnants of a Caledonian terrane which separates the Dalradian of North Mayo from the Ordovician of South Mayo to the south. Rocks of thearea have been variouslyinterpreted as representing part of the Dalradiansuccession, as a Cambrian to Ordovician rifted margin to subduction related basin, and as a shear carpet derived from an accretionary wedge overridden by an ophiolite in the early Ordovician. The lithologies present include discontinuous outcrops of ultrabasic and basic rocks, together with quartzose and semipelitic schists on the south shore of Clew Bay. These are in contact to the north with a sedimentary and volcanic sequence exposed both on the mainland and on Clare Island for which a detailed stratigraphy had previously been established. We reinterpret this latter sequence as a melange containing blocks up to 500 m long of sandstone, conglomerate, chert and volcanics. Although microfossil evidence had previously shown thata chert block on Clare Island was of Late Llanvirn age, new fossil control shows that this date must be extended upwards. Microfossils extracted from a variety of lithologies within the melange showthat the cherts range from Middle Ordovicianto at least Caradoc.

For the Past is so inextric­ ably entwined with the Present, and that again with the Future, in our sentient being~our waking thoughts, most of all our dreams-that it just can't be done. When I ask my grocer for my war ration of tea, or my banker for a loan, it is not just to a salesman or a financier that I am speaking. With neither of them, in such relation, can there be a throb of understanding. They are rather two human beings, actuated-or, should I say, mesmerized?-each by the tentacles of his past, the accretions within his person of a long line of ancestors, some good, some bad, some ignoble, some honourable. A lineage precisely as ancient as that of any "blue-blood" in the realm: it is derived, if we are to believe tradition, from an identical source; they are barred from se1£­ perfectibility by the same flaming sword: sojourners alike in the Vale of Tears. Even if it is only buying a postage stamp, I must get to the bottom of the family of the salesman at the corner store. When he is at leisure, of course, and as quickly as is decently possible, I ask him where he was born, who were his parents, Irish or Soottish or English. This is the first sword-thrust at the joint in his armour that always-from fear or foolish pride (as in the English)-people carry burdensomely through the years.
