Leadership 2019 Rudi Bauer, Quartz Reef by Gourmet Traveller

“This important award goes to a man whose success as a viticulturist and winemaker and efforts as a tireless promoter of New Zealand wine in general and, in particular, Central Otago wine, has been an inspiration to others.” 6 7 ATA RANGI MARTINBOROUGH, NEW ZEALAND

Ata Rangi, meaning “dawn sky” or “new beginning” in Maori is a small New Zealand winery with a renowned reputation for Pinot Noir. Located at the southern end of the North Island in the village of Martinborough, it is owned and managed by a family trio – Clive Paton, his wife Phyll and his sister Alison. Ata Rangi has an enviable reputation as one of the New World’s most respected Pinot Noir producers.

Clive planted his first vines on a small, stony sheep paddock at the edge of the Martinborough village in 1980 as one of a handful of people who pioneered winegrowing in the area.

Ata Rangi Pinot Noir is undoubtedly the flagship wine, and in 2010 was honoured with the inaugural Tipuranga Teitei o Aotearoa or “Grand Cru of New Zealand”.

With a skilled team in place, including dynamic winemaker Helen Masters, Clive now has more time to focus on his commitment to conservation and to the Ata Rangi alliance with Project Crimson.

Ata Rangi is part of the Family of Twelve. The Family of Twelve is a fraternity of twelve of New Zealand’s most prestigious and enduring artisanal wineries.

9 BLACK ESTATE NORTH CANTERBURY, NEW ZEALAND

Black Estate is a family owned winery in Waipara, North Canterbury with three north-facing hillside vineyards with clay and a diverse range of limestone soils. Owned and run by Nicholas Brown and Pen Naish Black Estate wish to capture the truest expression of each site's character in the bottle so to make wine that is truly original and memorable. 1. Home: The slope is a north facing sedimentary clay fan on a gentle hill side slope. The soils are mainly Awapuni clay loam with calcium carbonate deposits. 2. Damsteep: lay overlying fractured limestone and sandstone soils. 3. Netherwood: Waipara Greensand (green grey richly glauconitic sandstone)

Rooted in Rudolf Steiner teachings, Black Estate sees each of the three vineyards in a holistic way. All the elements that make up the vineyards are considered, and how they interact and make one healthy, vital whole. The vines, fields, forests, animals, plants, soils, compost, people and the spirt of the place are equally important. When all considered, the sites can build their own sustaining natural rhythms.

Black Estate is one of the region‘s top producers and runs one of the best winery restaurants in the country.

11 BLANK CANVAS MARLBOROUGH, NEW ZEALAND

Husband and wife team challenging winemaking orthodoxy creating single vineyard, small batch wines that are both interesting and delicious. Winemaker and international wine consultant Matt Thomson’s science background defines the parameters of his winemaking canvas, allowing creativity to flow within those bounds.

With 50 vintages and 27 years of winemaking around the globe, Matt Thomson is one of the world’s high profile flying winemaker. In 2016, he has created his own wine label. That experience, together with his degree in biochemistry, has given Matt a clear vision as to what constitutes good wine and how to make it. Together with business partner, Master of Wine student and wife Sophie Parker-Thomson, Matt is striving to achieve the unique winemaking fusion between art and science, pushing the boundaries to capture a unique expression.

Blank Canvas allows Matt to take a few risks and make wines that he and Sophie like to drink. Their collective goal is to create distinctive small-batch, single vineyard wines that reflect the best sub-regional sites in New Zealand.

The Blank Canvas philosophy embraces using as little manipulation as possible to uphold, over everything else, the wine’s sense of place. Wine-making influence from Europe is genuine, with both Matt and Sophie undertaking vintage in the Northern Hemisphere every year.

15 BURN COTTAGE CENTRAL OTAGO, NEW ZEALAND

Burn Cottage is a 24 ha integrated farm with around 11 ha vineyards in the foothills of the Pisa range in Central Otago. The boutique winery has gained a cult status. The vineyard is owned by the Sauvage family which also owns the celebrated Koehler Ruprecht estate in the Pfalz region of Germany, as well as several fine wine importing and wholesaling companies in the United States.

In 2002, husband and wife Marquis Sauvage and Dianne Sauvage fell in love with the extraordinary beauty of Central Otago and became even more impressed after tasting through the region's wines.

Previously grazed by sheep, the first blocks were planted in 2003. The vineyard development has continued at a loving and deliberate pace to ensure that only the best plant material has been used. With the help of global wine guru Ted Lemon of Littorai Wines in Sonoma County, Burn Cottage makes top pinot noirs and a blended white from riesling and grüner veltliner. Ted Lemon was the first American ever hired to manage an estate in Burgundy, Domaine Guy Roulot in Meursault and is well known in both the new and old worlds for his passionate devotion to producing terroir driven wines.

Burn Cottage has a tiny production of approximately 5000 cases.

17 DRY RIVER MARTINBOROUGH, NEW ZEALAND

Dry River is one of the pioneers in Martinborough and one of New Zeland‘s cult brands. It was established 1979 by Dr Neil and Dawn McCallum.

The first wines, Chardonnay, Gewurztraminer and Pinot gris were bottled in 1984 and Dry River has since developed a reputation as one of New Zealand’s most iconic pioneering wineries. The wines are largely sold by mail order and are not widely available through the retail trade.

„Nature. Nurture. Knowledge.“ – this is the mantra of the winery. Fine wine is a combination of the characteristics of the Earth, and a unique knowledge of how to get the best out of this special place they call home.

Now led by winemaker Wilco Lam, Dry River achieves impressive concentration in all its reds by maintaining low yields and manipulating the vine canopy to expose the fruit to sunlight early in the ripening season.

The name Dry River was that of one of the earliest South Wairarapa sheep stations (around 1877).

Accolades: Top Wineries of New Zealand 2018 & 2019 “Dry River achieves impressive concentration in all its reds …” – Bob Campbell MW

19 DURVILLEA MARLBOROUGH, NEW ZEALAND

Astrolabe Wines Ltd. is a personal project for winemaker Simon Waghorn and his wife, Jane. It is a culmination of a winemaking career that began in 1982. All Simon’s skill and experience combine to capture the wines he creates.

The family business was created in 1996 and produces a range of wines that express the purity and intensity of fruit flavours afforded by the climate and soils of the Marlborough. In 2018 their youngest daughter, Arabella; middle daughter Libby Levett and Libby’s husband, Peter, have bought the external shares. Astrolabe Wines Ltd. is fully family- owned with the next generation already highly involved in the company.

Simon is considered as one of New Zealand’s best winemakers. The grapes are sourced entirely from unique Marlborough sites to add layers of complexity to our wines. Each site was chosen for the distinctive flavour it produces. Simon works with dedicated growers who understand the rhythms of the land and know how to grow grapes that express the terroir.

Astrolabe Wine Ltd. is named after the ship that in 1827 charted and explored the Marlborough Coast.

21 FRAMINGHAM MARLBOROUGH, NEW ZEALAND

At the boutique winery in the Wairau Valley, the Framingham team crafts expressive, individual small batch wines with new world purity and old world complexity. The long-serving team around winemaker and ex-punk Dr. Andrew Hedley only sources fruit from the Wairau Valley, from both their own vineyard and carefully selected grower sites nearby.

The Framingham Rieslings are arguably the best in the country, the reputation cemented by a number of annual releases. Andrew Hedley and Framingham does it all so well with Riesling, and notably with the likes of the ‘Classic’, ‘Select’ and ‘Noble’, which are recognised consistently as among the country’s best in classical styles. The wines from their 30+ year old vines show off the estate’s stony terroir in a distinctly Germanic fashion.

Nevertheless, Framingham is first and foremost a Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc producer. The vast majority of its annual 23,000 – 25,000 case production is dedicated to that variety. The Sauvignon Blanc is distinctly Marlborough with a mineral twist, crafted from many different batches from several diverse Wairau Valley sites.

Andrew is carefully pushing the boundaries in style, and the Framingham label is increasingly showing points of difference from mainstream Marlborough.

However, Andrew has lifted the game with the funky ‘F- Series’ wines, so that they offer great interest as well as top quality.” – Raymond Chan

24 FROMM WINERY MARLBOROUGH, NEW ZEALAND

One of New Zealand's top Pinot Noir producers that combine both, European style and Kiwi ingenuity.

Well-known Swiss wine producer Georg Fromm and winemaker Hätsch Kalberer started FROMM WINERY in 1992. George had an understanding of European viticulture and Hätsch had worked making wines in both Europe and New Zealand.

While the Fromm have returned to Switzerland many years ago, their old family friend and now owner Pol Lenzinger and Swiss business partner George Walliser took over.

One of the few Pinot Noir producers country-wide, who specialise in showcasing site and terroir across several bottlings, it has build up a reputation for truly outstanding Pinot Noir. Their passion is reflected in the attention to detail shown in the vineyard (4000 - 5000 vines per hectar) and throughout the winemaking process. Carefully selected clones and rootstocks, intensive vineyard care and low cropping (five to six tonnes per hectare ), means the vines produce fruit that illustrates the soil in which they were grown.

FROMM is part of the Family of Twelve. The Family of Twelve is a fraternity of twelve of New Zealand’s most prestigious and enduring artisanal wineries. Accolades:

26 GIBBSTON VALLEY CENTRAL OTAGO, NEW ZEALAND

Inspired by his passion for winemaking, Gibbston Valley Winery founder, Alan Brady, planted his first vines in Gibbston in the early 1980s. At 45 degrees south of the equator, his vines were right on the knife-edge of possibility for grape cultivation. Everyone thought that it was too cold for grapes here, but Brady had a hunch, and he was right.

Alan Brady planted Gibbston Valley's first commercial vineyard, Home Block, in 1983 and released Central Otago’s first commercial vintage in 1987. The wine gained considerable recognition, creating Central Otago's first footprint in the world of winemaking. Soon others followed.

Today, Central Otago is regarded as one of the top three regions in the world for Pinot Noir along with Burgundy in and Oregon in the USA. Alan Brady has moved on, but along the way, a succession of top winemakers (and viticulturists) have honed their craft with Alan. Head winemaker Christopher Keys joined Gibbston Valley in 2006 and is leading the current winemaker team. Gibbston Valley is one of the few Pinot Noir producers country-wide, who specialise in showcasing site and terroir across several bottlings.

With the restaurant, wine cave and adjacent Gibbston Valley Cheesery on site, Gibbston has become a worldwide travel destination and arguably the most-visited winery in New Zealand. And they have just opened a luxury Lodge & Spa.

28 HANS FAMILY ESTATE MARLBOROUGH, NEW ZEALAND

Hans Family Estate is a family owned winery and restaurant, supported by a unique team of individuals who all share the same values: a passion for wine and food, commitment to excellence and quality.

As the name suggests, winemaker Hans Herzog's roots lie in Switzerland where the family has grown wine since 1630. There Hans and Therese owned the successful 'Taggenberg' vineyard and restaurant in the Zurich wine country.

Looking for a new challenge, in the mid 1990's they planted an 11.5 ha vineyard bordering the Wairau River in Marlborough and later moved the winery and Michelin-starred restaurant. They brought with them their philosophies of hand-crafting wine as artisans. Hans has adopted an experimentalist stance, cultivating an eclectic array of varieties (currently 26)..

The vineyard benefits from a warm, dry microclimate. The vines are close-planted with a density of 5,500 vines per hectare. The yields are miniscule, quantities limited, with a total production of around 3,000 cases per annum. The wines are made at the winery on site. Hans ferments at cool temperatures using wild yeasts, the white wines barrel-fermented in 500 litre oak puncheons, the reds aged for 12-30 months in French oak barriques, creating wines rich in varietal character. The wines are released when they are deemed ready to enjoy.

The boutique estate and restaurant is now widely acclaimed as one of the best in New Zealand. Accolades: “Hans Herzog is one of Marlborough’s most precious vinous and culinary gems.” – Bob Campbell MW

31 LAWSON‘S DRY HILLS MARLBOROUGH, NEW ZEALAND

Lawson’s Dry Hills celebrated 25 years of winegrowing in 2017, and it is well-established as one of Marlborough’s stalwart producers with a wonderful reputation for the quality of its wines, especially with Sauvignon Blanc and the aromatic varieties.

Ross and Barbara Lawson are one of the pioneers in the New Zealand wine scene. They founded the winery in 1992. They had been growing grapes on their Alabama Road vineyard since 1980 and decided to start producing their own range of wines.

Their first vintage included Gewürztraminer. It was just fifteen tons and was managed by Ross from the old red tin shed on the property, which is still standing and forms part of the winery cellar door. Sadly Ross passed away in February 2009. The company is now run by general manager and director Sion Barnsley, his family being shareholders from the start.

The team around winemaker Marcus Wright shows an open-mindedness with respect to winemaking styles. Marcus has been in the company since 2001.

Lawson’s Dry Hills is part of the Family of Twelve. The Family of Twelve is a fraternity of twelve of New Zealand’s most prestigious and enduring artisanal wineries. Accolades: Top Wineries of New Zealand 2018 & 2019 – Bob Campbell MW

33 MAN O‘ WAR VINEYARDS WAIHEKE ISLAND, NEW ZEALAND

Perfect natural conditions together with high winemaking skills attribute to the success of Man O'War wines. Dramatic scenery and panoramic views are all around when you visit the island home of the Man O'War vineyards.

It was along this coastline that Captain James Cook came to anchor during his first voyage around the islands of New Zealand in 1769. Upon sighting the ancient stands of magnificent Kauri trees ashore, Cook noted in his journals that they would make ideal masts for the Man O’ War warships of the Royal Navy. Thus the name Man O’ War was bestowed upon this unique land.

Over two hundred years after Cook first sighted Man O’ War, the Spencer family was convinced that world class wine could be grown here. Throwing caution to the wind the first vines were planted in 1993. Today Man O’ War is still a family business and consists of 60 ha of vines planted in 76 individual hillside blocks, each with a distinct soil profile and microclimate.

Every single block bears the footprints, and sometimes the names, of those who transformed Man O’ War’s rugged hillsides into a spectacular patchwork of vines. Each block has been meticulously designed with different rootstocks, clones and planting densities to best match the specific terroir on offer. Each small parcel of vines is carefully tended and harvested by hand, then vinified separately, fusing classic Old World techniques with innovative New World ideas.

38 NEUDORF VINEYARDS NELSON, NEW ZEALAND

Judy and Tim Finn of Neudorf were one of the pioneers for wine in New Zealand when they started in 1978. They have successfully established themselves as one of the top producers in the country.

Great wines have a basis of fruit concentration, length and sense of place – characters which can be formed only in the vineyard. The team at Neudorf under Todd Stevens and assistant winemaker Simon McQuire believe their primary task is to grow grapes which express the site, to take the essence of that fruit and then preserve it as wine. On the way they may fine tune the balance and complexity in a number of ways but the aim is always to allow the site to speak.

For their important role in making New Zealand wine the success that it now is, Judy and Tim Finn have been awarded as „Legends of New Zealand Wine“ by the New Zealand International Wine Show.

Neudorf is part of the Family of Twelve. The Family of Twelve is a fraternity of twelve of New Zealand’s most prestigious and enduring artisanal wineries.

40 PALLISER ESTATE MARTINBOROUGH, NEW ZEALAND

Palliser Estate is a boutique vineyard based in the renowned Martinborough area. For over two decades, the people have been carefully looking after this wonderful corner of New Zealand, producing quality wine for the world to enjoy. Excellent Parker ratings joined by other wine critics proof the perfect growing conditions in one of the best known regions in New Zealand.

Palliser Estate is well established as a leading winery in the ultra premium grape-growing region of Martinborough. Martinborough’s fertile and free-draining soil was created over the course of 20,000 years, as the Ruamahanga River and its contributing rivers exposed stony sub-soils, built up layers of alluvial river terraces and cast its silty river loam across the landscape.

To continue to produce these great wines, Palliser puts a lot of effort to protect the environment. Excellent soil to produce excellent wines is only possible in a healthy, fertile environment. As a result Palliser estate has developed a sustainable approach to the land. They closely monitor and minimise all the impacts the winery has on the environment – from the sprays applied in the vineyard to all the packaging materials used.

Palliser Estate is part of the Family of Twelve. The Family of Twelve is a fraternity of twelve of New Zealand’s most prestigious and enduring artisanal wineries.

42 QUARTZ REEF CENTRAL OTAGO, NEW ZEALAND

Austrian-born Rudi Bauer is one of New Zealand’s premier winemakers and has been a force in New Zealand and international wine growing for more than three decades.

Rudi Bauer is a two-time winner of the New Zealand Winemaker of the Year award. Rudi arrived in New Zealand in 1985 with degrees in viticulture and winemaking, joining New Zealand's oldest winery, Mission Estate, as assistant winemaker.

While Central Otago may be most famous today for its dramatic scenery portrayed in the Lord of the Rings movies, Rudi is helping ensure it is equally famous for its sparkling wines and Pinot Noir. In 1989, he became Rippon Vineyard's first certified winemaker. The pinot noirs he created there sparked a pinot-revolution and led to an increase of wineries in the region. In 1990, Rudi made New Zealand’s first sparkling base wine in Central Otago. He was to first to see the huge potential that the sub-region of Bendigo offers for outstanding wines.

Rudi founded his own winery Quartz Reef in 1996. Quartz Reef produces sparkling and still wines of both finesse and power.

44 RIPPON CENTRA OTAGO, NEW ZEALAND

The stunningly beautiful Rippon Vineyard is situated on the shores of Lake Wanaka, with views across the lake to Ruby Island and the magnificent snow-capped peaks of the Buchannan Mountains. Founded 1982 by the Mill’s family, it is often regarded as the most photographed vineyard in the world.

Here, truly great wine is produced by one of the Central Otago viticulture pioneers. The sense of place is also mirrored in the deep care for the environment by the Mills family.

Lake Wanaka creates a unique environment. The temperance of this large thermal mass, coupled with the protective nature of Ruby Island further softens Rippon’s microclimate.

All Rippon wines are issued from a single vineyard; no fruit is bought in from outside the property. Rippon wines are issued from some of the oldest vines in the region. 80% of the vineyard is planted on its own roots and is not irrigated.

Rippon Pinot Noirs spend two winters (15-18 months, depending on vine age and vintage) in barrel and are run into bottle without filtering or fining. Rippon Pinot Noirs, Rieslings & Gewürztraminer are cellared in bottle for one year before being released to the market.

46 SPY VALLEY WINES MARLBOROUGH, NEW ZEALAND

The 1990s were a time of discovery and courage in Marlborough. Deep in the Waihopai Valley, Bryan and Jan Johnson had the audacity to establish 180 hectares of estate vineyards on land considered too hard, too dry and too unfertile for wine.

It was a venture that started with a passion for the land. This pioneering spirit established one of New Zealand’s most successful family-run wineries, now exporting its wines to 35 countries.

Today, Spy Valley is lead by the second generation of the Johnson family, Amanda Johnson. 100% New Zealand family owned and operated, its commitment remains to the land and to the people who tend it. They consider themselves simply as farmers at heart, nurturing soil and vine to cultivate the complexities in their wine. And they are mindful that it’s their focus on sustainability which will ensure our guardianship of this land for generations to come.

They have a modern fully integrated winemaking facility, strong attention for detail and focus on quality in their wines made from eight different grape varietals.

The name Spy Valley derived its name from the presence of an international satellite base located just down the road from the estate - Marlborough’s very own spy base. Accolades:
