  • Meat Consumption and Potential Reduction for Environmental and Public Health Benefits
MEAT CONSUMPTION AND POTENTIAL REDUCTION FOR ENVIRONMENTAL AND PUBLIC HEALTH BENEFITS by GARRETT LENTZ A thesis submitted to the University of Otago in partial fulfilment for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY Department of Geography June 2019 Abstract The focus of this thesis was to better understand meat consumption and investigate how a shift to more plant-based diets may best be promoted. The various environmental impacts linked to animal agriculture were explored and a movement towards more plant-based diets was found as a solution that could alleviate environmental impacts, along with the added benefit of improving public health and helping to safeguard future food security. Shifting a behaviour that is as prevalent as meat consumption is no easy task however, as high rates of meat intake have become normalised in many developed nations, being influenced not only by the desires of individual actors’, but also structures within society that encourage continued production and consumption. Potential economic, regulatory, and informational measures to encourage meat reduction were explored and after weighing multiple factors, the potential for information provision to shift consumer meat intake held promise. However, before further inquiry into potential information provision measures, it was advisable to first obtain a more thorough understanding of consumers’ meat consumption within the relatively understudied nation of New Zealand. Thus, the first study of the thesis sought to better understand New Zealand consumers’ meat intake through the distribution of a nationwide questionnaire. Awareness of meat’s environmental impacts was determined to be low and the most common motivations for reducing meat were considerations of cost and health.

  • Revisiting the Mystery of Pg1407+265
REVISITING THE MYSTERY OF PG1407+265 Jonathan C. McDowell (CfA), Aneta Siemiginowska (CfA), Luigi Gallo (Halifax), Katherine Blundell (Oxford) The unusual z=0.94 quasar PG1407+265 shows anomalously weak emission lines and intermediate-level radio emission. It has been interpreted (Blundell, Beasley and Bicknell 2003) as an intrinsically radio-quiet quasar with a stunted, pole-on relativistic radio jet. We present a preliminary reanalysis of existing X-ray data in the light of recent theoretical developments, providing new clues to the nature of this object and the role of inflows and outflows in luminous AGN. X-ray Clusters and Quasar Feedback Chandra observations of X-ray clusters indicate that the powerful outbursts of radio activity in the central AGN can provide enough energy to heat up the cluster and prevent its cooling (see McNamara and Nulsen 2007 for review). This so-called “radio mode” feedback has observational support, but the luminous quasars with highest mass black holes and highest accretion rates can also provide enough energy to drive powerful outflows and winds which can provide the required heat in cooling core clusters without help from the radio jet (e.g. Fabian 2009). The evidence for “quasar mode” feedback has been emerging only recently thanks to recent Chandra observations of two cooling core clusters associated with the luminous quasars 3C 186 (Siemiginowska et al 2010) and H1821+643 (Russell et al Fig 1: UV-optical-IR spectrum from McDowell et al 201). King (2009, 2010) argues that this “quasar mode” could be the more important mechanism but so far there are few 1995 showing anomalously weak lines; the high ionization lines show blueshifts of >10000 km/s examples of clusters where this phenomenon can be studied.

  • Painted Rock Estate Winery Reviewed by Jancis Robinson
Painted Rock Estate Winery reviewed by Jancis Robinson This May, John Skinner and fellow Canadian wine producers, headed to London England to participate in a number of tastings amounting to what Jancis referred to as “Canada Week in London” in her recent article titled “British Columbia catching up fast”. The events were focused on presenting Canadian wines to trade, media, buyers and educators at an event and we centered around the “Canada Calling” event hosted by the Canadian High Commission to the UK at Canada House. It was at this event that renowned British wine critic, Jancis Robinson, and her colleague Richard Hemming, had the chance to taste an assortment of Canadian wines. The wines were brought forward by a self-selected collection of Canadian producers including a number of Okanagan Wine Initiative members. John Skinner, Proprietor of Painted Rock Estate Winery, believes that it is imperative that premium Canadian wine producers rally behind their industry, and their investment, and send their very best abroad to build the Canadian wine brand in this competitive world market. Jancis Robinson’s article, which appeared on www.jancisrobsinson.com on May 30th, included reviews of 72 British Columbia wines, including 6 Painted Rock wines. We are particularly excited that the two vintages of our Red Icon, 2009 and 2016, received 17 points – the highest awarded to any BC wines at the tasting. This affirmed our commitment to creating consistently cellar worthy wines, vintage after vintage. Please see below for the reviews given on www.JancisRobinson.com. UNNERVING IMAGES: CINEMATIC REPRESENTATIONS OF ANIMAL SLAUGHTER AND THE ETHICS OF SHOCK by Sarah Jane O’Brien A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Graduate Department of The Centre for Comparative Literature University of Toronto © Copyright by Sarah Jane O’Brien (2012) —Abstract— UNNERVING IMAGES: CINEMATIC REPRESENTATIONS OF ANIMAL SLAUGHTER AND THE ETHICS OF SHOCK Sarah Jane O’Brien Doctor of Philosophy, 2012 The Centre for Comparative Literature University of Toronto This dissertation forges critical connections between the industrial logic of cutting up animals to make meat and cinematic techniques of cutting up indexical images of animals to create spectacle. I begin by identifying the cinematic attraction of violent animal death. In Chapter One, I argue that social and material conditions prevent cinema from representing real (i.e., unsimulated) human death, and the medium in turn relies on animal bodies to register visible evidence of death. I contend that this displacement does not yield the definitive knowledge of death that it promises; reviewing scenes of animal death, we acquire no real knowledge of the “fact” of death, but rather approach an understanding that we share death—finitude, vulnerability, suffering—with animals. Cinema’s ethical potential rests on its singular capacity to lay bare this shared susceptibility, and I thus shift my attention to evaluating how seminal scenes of animal slaughter and fundamental techniques of film form fulfil or fail this ethical potential. I begin my wide-ranging analysis by identifying and critiquing, in Chapter Two, the methods of exposure that currently dominate cinematic representations of slaughter.
