We wanted a gypsy association for this wine because it is not a wine from a ‘place’ so much as one shaped by us; our traditions and joys. Gypsies have a very strong and romantic culture, but they are not tied to any particular location. By mounding up Patrina in specific configurations called Patrina, Gypsies mark secret trails that fellow clan members can follow to special gathering places. Patrina guide these nomads to the site of what starts out as a simple get together underscored with wine and song. These bohemian celebrations of nothing in particular inevitably escalate with great abandon into wildly hedonistic carousing. Our vineyards are a patchwork of isolated soil types that you may recognize as Reva, Lorraine, Seymour’s and Pandora (very much wines of a place). Between and in route to these well healed sites are vineyards that are not so obviously distinct. We have blended these disparate and ‘disenfranchised’ blocks into a single wine we call Patrina. Like the Gypsy trails from which Patrina derives its name, we hope these bottles lead you to some great merriment, or more. While the grapes for Patrina are raised with the same detail and attentiveness as the rest of our vineyards, and then fermented open top with indigenous yeast, gentle pump overs and a few punch downs once soft, it is bottled unfined and unfiltered after ‘just’ 22 months in barrel to preserve its youthful exuberance. All the density and concentration folks have come to expect from our reds with black and blue fruits, mineral notes, and flowers. ABOUT THE PRODUCER: Alban Vineyards Starting in 1985, John Alban planted grapes for other people until he bought an estate in 1989. With a focus on creating wines made from Rhône Valley varietals, Alban came to be a pioneer of the Rhone Rangers movement, and is considered one of the most influential American Rhone producers. On beginning to grow Viognier, Alban stated "I almost single-handedly doubled the world's acreage," referring to a time when its cultivation was reduced to 50 acres (20 ha) in two areas of the Rhône Valley, Condrieu and Château-Grillet. Alban's work, along with that of Josh Jensen of Calera Wine Company in San Benito County, helped to significantly expand plantings of Viognier in California at a time when the varietal was near extinction. http://www.albanvineyards.com/.

The James Beard Foundation Scholarship Program The Rhone Rangers Professional Study/Travel Grant Our Missions: Rhone Rangers: Advancing the knowledge and enjoyment of Rhone wines produced in America The James Beard Foundation: To celebrate, nurture, and honor America’s diverse culinary heritage through programs that educate and inspire. The James Beard Foundation and the Rhone Rangers offer this professional study/travel grant to enable working sommeliers or chefs to learn about American Rhone varietal wines by visiting several notable wineries and meeting the winemakers. The amount of the grant will be based on the time and expense needed to complete a specific itinerary. Covered expenses (up to $5,000) are: air and ground travel, lodging, and meals. Receipts must be submitted for reimbursement. This opportunity allows the recipient to visit Rhone Ranger winery members to get a better understanding of where in the US the Rhone varietal grapes are grown, how the wines are made, and to get a sense of their vineyard terroir. The goal will be to provide a greater understanding and appreciation of the quality, diversity, and food-friendliness of American Rhone wines. Recipients are required to submit a plan at the conclusion of their trip, drawing on what they have learned and stating how they plan to demonstrate their new knowledge as part of their wine program at their workplace. (For example, building American Rhone flights to be paired with small plates at their restaurant or wine bar). If timing is appropriate the recipient should coordinate their trip to coincide with a Rhone Rangers national or chapter event to meet the producers and maximize their experience.

Rhone Rangers Press Seminar San Francisco, California 2009 Notes on A Mavericks Approach to Rhone production presented by Kerry Damskey Non Traditional Blending of Syrah with Cabernet Sauvignon I have been a proponent of the blending of Syrah with Cabernet for a number of years. I have created wines with this flavor profile from India to Washington State with the same result-a complex and richly textured wine that transcends both Cabernet and Syrah. In the pre AOC years of the 1855, Hermitage was a regular supplier to the merchants of Bordeaux from the 2nd half of the 18th century for nearly 100 years… it’s role being to strengthen the finer wines of Bordeaux… quotes H. Warner Allen from his book “The History of Wine” Some flavors are just meant to go together When examining the flavor profile in food such as simple combinations like peanut butter and jelly just intuitively work well together, such is the case of Cabernet and Syrah. Syrah also has the innate ability to enhance the variety, and in this case, we’re talking about Cabernet Sauvignon… that it is being blended with. In the case of Cabernet and Syrah: Cabernet Sauvignon holds the structure of the blend and usually is the defining blend signature. Syrah, as in traditional Rhone blending with this variety, lends strength and structure yet processes an entirely compatible fruit component and color.
