Karl Barth’s Theology of Joy John Mark Capper Selwyn College Submitted for the award of Doctor of Philosophy University of Cambridge April 1998 Karl Barth’s Theology of Joy John Mark Capper, Selwyn College Cambridge, April 1998 Joy is a recurrent theme in the Church Dogmatics of Karl Barth but it is one which is under-explored. In order to ascertain reasons for this lack, the work of six scholars is explored with regard to the theme of joy, employing the useful though limited “motifs” suggested by Hunsinger. That the revelation of God has a trinitarian framework, as demonstrated by Barth in CD I, and that God as Trinity is joyful, helps to explain Barth’s understanding of theology as a “joyful science”. By close attention to Barth’s treatment of the perfections of God (CD II.1), the link which Barth makes with glory and eternity is explored, noting the far-reaching sweep which joy is allowed by contrast with the related theme of beauty. Divine joy is discerned as the response to glory in the inner life of the Trinity, and as such is the quality of God being truly Godself. Joy is seen to be “more than a perfection” and is basic to God’s self-revelation and human response. A dialogue with Jonathan Edwards challenges Barth’s restricted use of beauty in his theology, and highlights the innovation Barth makes by including election in his doctrine of God. In the context of Barth’s anthropology, paying close attention to his treatment of “being in encounter” (CD III.2), there is an examination of the significance of gladness as the response to divine glory in the life of humanity, and as the crowning of full and free humanness. -

It will look at what theology is, who does theology, where it is done, and for what purpose. The traditional sources of theological reflection, such as the Bible, traditions, experience and reason will be examined. The contextuality of all theologies will be stressed, and the relativity of traditional Western theology will be exposed, and newer approaches to theology will be explored, including liberation theologies of the two-thirds world. Students will be encouraged to bring a Pacific focus to their own work, drawing on various models of contextual theology with a view to identifying, describing and critically analysing the methods that undergird such models. Objectives By the end of the course students should be able to: Be aware of and describe the context in which they do theology Define what theology is and understand the role of the theologian Describe several sources for doing theology Appreciate several different models of doing contextual theology See how key doctrines have been interpreted through contextual methods Method of Teaching A combination of lectures, readings, writing and discussion. Assessment Assessment will be as set out below, with one essay, class participation, and an exam. All assessment must engage with the class materials, readings, and additional scholarly materials (books, journal articles, and generally not online materials). Every effort should be made to write correct English in the essay and exam. -

Through research, teaching, fellowships, and colloquia, the Liman Center supports efforts to bring about a more just legal system. Yale Law School established the Arthur Liman Public Interest Program in 1997 with the support of friends and family of Arthur Liman ’57. In 2017, the program became the Arthur Liman Center for Public Interest Law. About Arthur Liman Arthur Liman exemplified commitment to the public interest. A highly respected attorney in private practice at Paul Weiss Rifkind & Garrison, Liman devoted much of his time to public service. He was General Counsel to the special commission investigating the 1971 uprising at the New York State prison at Attica and lead counsel for the 1987 Senate investigation of the Iran-Contra affair. Thereafter, Arthur Liman continued to work for reform of the criminal legal system. He helped to establish a number of legal aid organizations, including the Legal Action Center, working to end discrimination against people who have been incarcerated and to reform drug laws. Liman also served as President of the Legal Aid Society of New York and of the Neighborhood Defender Services of Harlem, as a Trustee of the Vera Institute of Justice, and as the Chair of the New York State Capital Defender’s Office. Religions of foreign origin have shaped Chinese cultural history much stronger than generally assumed and continue to have impact on Chinese society in varying regional degrees. The essays collected in the present volume put a special emphasis on these “foreign” and less familiar aspects of Chinese religion. Apart from an introductory article on Daoism (the BKGA 85 BKGA Religion in China prototypical autochthonous religion of China), the volume reflects China’s encounter with religions of the so-called Western Regions, starting from the adoption of Indian Buddhism to early settlements of religious minorities from the Near East (Islam, Christianity, and Judaism) and the early modern debates between Confucians and Christian missionaries. Contemporary Major Concepts and religious minorities, their specific social problems, and their regional diversities are discussed in the cases of Abrahamitic traditions in China. The volume therefore contributes to our understanding of most recent and Minority Positions potentially violent religio-political phenomena such as, for instance, Islamist movements in the People’s Republic of China. With every passing year it is becoming more evident that these are shortly to be, if indeed they are not already, quite as important as those with Europe. Ameri can business, American missions, and American diplomacy are all intimately concerned with the Far East and we are in addition constantly confronted with the problem of immigration from the Orient. Because of these contacts and the complications which they involve, it is obviously necessary that Americans should make themselves familiar with the nations whose neighbors we have become. College curriculums have been slow to adjust themselves to the need and in but a very few is there given anything that approaches adequate recognition of our trans-Pacific neighbors. We are, fortunately, well supplied with courses on European history and institutions, but to the Far Orient our university schedule makers pay only the scantiest attention. While this remains true, the need must in part be met by informal, extra-curriculum groups. It is to meet the needs of such of these groups as wish to study China that this syllabus is prepared. -

Student Housing Trends 2017-2018 Academic Year Boston’s world-renowned colleges and universities provide our City and region with unparalleled cultural resources, a thriving economic engine, and a talented workforce at the forefront of global innovation. However, the more than 147,000 students enrolled in Boston-based undergraduate and graduate degree programs place enormous strain on the city’s residential housing market, contributing to higher rents and housing costs for Boston’s workforce. In Housing a Changing City: Boston 2030, the Walsh Administration outlined three clear strategic goals regarding student housing: 1. Create 18,500 new student dormitory beds by the end of 2030;1 2. Reduce the number of undergraduates living off-campus in Boston by 50%;2 3. Ensure all students reside in safe and suitable housing. The annual student housing report provides the opportunity to review the trends in housing Boston’s students and the effect these students are having on Boston’s local housing market. This report is based on data from the University Accountability Reports (UAR) submitted by Boston-based institutions of higher education.3 In this edition of Student Housing Trends,4 data improvements have led to more precise enrollment and off-campus data, allowing the City to better distinguish between students that are or are not having an impact on the private housing market. The key findings are: ● • Overall enrollment at Boston-based colleges and universities is 147,689. This represents net growth of just under 4,000 (2.8%) students since 2013, and a 2,300+ (1.6%) student increase over last year. -
Meals+With+Faculty+Program+Semester+Report+
Introduction Every day, Yale College students interact with their instructors, which include professors, lecturers, and teaching fellows. However, these interactions are typically limited to the classroom and office hours, and relationships tend not to continue past the end of the semester. By creating another way in which students can interact with faculty, students will have the ability to develop stronger relationships, which are valuable for both students and faculty. A Meals with Faculty program would allow students to interact more easily with professors, lecturers, and teaching fellows outside of typical learning spaces. This project aims to institute a robust Meals with Faculty program within Yale College. Background Currently, Yale College does not offer a college-wide Meals with Faculty program for students. Although professors in some classes invite students to meals, whether in the dining hall or off-campus, these are only a handful. There are also several residential colleges that have similar Meals with Faculty programs, such as Davenport College, Branford College, and Grace Hopper College. These college-specific programs are typically run by the residential college councils. In addition to this, students already have the opportunity to schedule meals with tenured professors, who are able to have lunches in the dining halls free of charge. However, many students are unaware of this opportunity or feel uncomfortable asking professors to a meal. A Meals with Faculty program would break down this “barrier” to interacting more with faculty. Peer Institutions Most of Yale’s peer institutions have Meals with Faculty programs in place. Each peer institution has designed a unique program to encourage relationships between students and faculty.
